Alison Steadman has reflected on filming the first lesbian kiss on British television in the 1974 BBC drama, Girl.
The scene saw Steadman and Myra Frances’s military officers share an intimate moment in the then-controversial drama about gay women in the army.
Speaking in a new reader interview in The Guardian, Steadman, 76, said: “I remember being very nervous about the whole thing. Then I got over it. Then I was worried about how my parents, who lived in a quiet suburban area of Liverpool, would cope.
“I thought, ‘My poor mum! The neighbours will be whispering, “Did you see your daughter on television?”’ By the time we came to record, this great director [Peter Gill] didn’t make a fuss and said, ‘So this is the bit where they kiss … All right, quick kiss, let’s carry on.’

From the Macra to The Mysterious Planet, Andrew finds the gold in oft-unloved Doctor Who episodes from across the decades...
For the show's fiftieth anniversary, Doctor Who Magazine ran a new poll ranking the 241 stories up to and including The Time Of The Doctor. The Twin Dilemma came last again, having done so in 2009 survey, and though it does have many faults, it isn't completely bad. Colin Baker blazes his way haughtily through it, and the story noticeably lacks energy when he's off screen. Perhaps it might have been marginally better just to have had the Sixth Doctor and Peri go to a Little Chef so he could complain about the service.
In the lower half of the poll (compiled by people rating all the stories out of ten) are some pretty good stories, or at least ones that arguably don't deserve to be there. We've therefore compiled a list...

Your excellent coverage of the Olympic opening ceremony (28 July) could benefit from a few additional accolades. To organise such a panoply of scenes and thousands of individuals seamlessly took real genius. Imagine what Britain could be like if politicians or bankers had such organising skills. And the awesome sequence of lighting effects, which turned the stadium into a succession of jewel-like cameos and kaleidoscopic panoramas, demanded a quite outstanding level of professionalism on the part of the lighting engineers and designers. But most importantly, all hail Danny Boyle for his joyful celebration of ordinary people. What a marvel that this anarchic song to humanity has reverberated round the planet, seen by billions. What a riposte to the powerbrokers, arms traders and all those others who work against a sane and humane existence.
