The 21st annual Art Directors Guild Awards took place on Saturday (Jan. 27). These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the outcome of the Best Production Design race at the Academy Awards. Over the first two decades of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
Period film contender “The Shape of Water” is locked in a tight race with fantasy film nominee “Blade Runner 2049” to win the Oscar for Best Production Design according to our predictions. Two other period film nominees that are set in WWII — “Darkest Hour” and “Dunkirk” — sit in third and fourth place respectively — while fantasy contender “Beauty and the Beast” rounds out our top five predicted Oscar nominees.

Double win marks the first time two films have shared Australia’s top film prize.Scroll down for full list of winners
Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner and Jennifer Kent thriller The Babadook have both won the Aacta (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Award for best film, marking the first time that two titles have shared the country’s top film prize.
The event in Sydney, hosted this year by actresses Cate Blanchett and Deborah Mailman, is only the 4th annual Aacta Awards but they were the result of an overhaul of the AFI (Australian Film Institute) Awards, which were established in 1969.
The two winning films could not be more different from each other. Kent’s meticulously crafted low-budget claustrophobic thriller, The Babadook, is about a single mother who battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house.

The Lego Movie is fast approaching, and a new set of images have been released that show off… well, a lot of Batman mostly, but some interesting points along other lines as well. It’s an odd assortment of film stills actually, which makes it a bit more fun than normal, because some of them just look like someone playing with Legos and taking pictures.
It’s a bit surprising how much this one is taking off when it comes to the general chatter around the internet, and how much of a marketing push it’s getting. Is this one high on your list of upcoming movies? Or, cynic that you are, is this one rubbing you the wrong way?
Either way, take a look at what you have in store for you.

The Lego Movie, the first-ever, full-length theatrical Lego® adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, opens in theaters February 7, 2014.
Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (“21 Jump Street,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), this brand new trailer for The Lego Movie stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Charlie Day, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.
The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average Lego minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

It seems controversy leads to awards. The two big winners at last night.s inaugural Aacta Awards were thriller feature film Snowtown and TV drama series The Slap. Both renowned for their controversial nature, the film and TV series netted four and five gongs respectively.
Snowtown, about Australian serial killer John Bunting who befriends a 16-year-old, was honoured in the Best Direction (Justin Kurzel), Best Adapted Screenplay (Shaun Grant), Best Actor (Daniel Henshall) and Best Supporting Actress (Louise Harris) categories.
The last two awards were particularly impressive as neither actor had appeared in a feature film before. While Henshall had previously acted in such shows as Out of the Blue, it was Harris. first ever acting role.

In the second part of our Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole special, production designer Simon Whiteley discusses how Australia’s remote windswept areas inspired the world of the film.
What were the main environments created as sets for the film?
We drew most of our inspiration for the landscapes that were created for the movie from the more remote windswept areas of Australia. Primarily the wild uninhabited coasts and mountains of Tasmania, which could only be accessed by helicopter by boat or by foot. Filming the region from helicopter allowed us to capture the landscape and flora as well as the light, atmosphere and weather from an owl’s perspective. It was this footage, our initial designs and lighting frames as well as a short screen test with our first CG owl that got the movie green lit.
The Forest Kingdom of Tyto and the family hollow,...

To celebrate the release of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, Encore will publish a series of interviews with the key creatives behind the animated film.
Today we start with art director Grant Freckelton, who had to draw the line between visual realism and storytelling to create the owl world of the film.
Where do you draw the line between photorealism and a sense of artistic interpretation of this world?
Serving the story is more important than being a slave to realism, so I believe strict photorealism is not as important as creating dramatic imagery and eliciting and emotional response from the audience. When it comes down to it, we have to start reinterpreting reality the moment we stick a helmet on an owl and expect it to talk.
Part of the design process on Guardians was to figure out what we wanted to keep from reality,...

Although 3D is increasingly commonplace in mainstream film and often used to mixed effect, director Zack Snyder's vision for his latest, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole began long before the recent trend, going back more than three years to shortly after he completed work on 300 and happened to come across still images of owls rendered by that film's Art Director, Grant Freckleton, and his company, Animal Logic. "I happened to see those paintings," Snyder recalled at a Q and A following a 3D IMAX press screening, "I just stumbled upon them and said, 'What is this ridiculously awesome thing?' I was told, 'Oh, you wouldn't be interested in that. It's an owl movie for kids.'... I said, 'This is cool, but if we were to make this into a movie, we'd have...

Wanna know the secrets of Ga'Hoole? Take a look. First stop, Jim Sturgess.
Sturgess voices the role of Soren, the hero of the film. He's such a sweetheart in person, and in this interview, we talked about:
His involvement with the film
The visuals of the film
His character
His dreams as a child
The moral of the story

When I first heard that Zack Snyder was attached to direct the animated flick .Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga.Hoole,. I welcomed the news with trepidation. How can the director of the R-rated .300. and .Watchmen. transition to PG-rating animated adventure territory? And it.s about owls of all things! But fear not Snyder fans, the director brings his action sensibilities to the whimsical tale of an owl who dreams.
Based on the first three books of the fifteen-book series Guardians of Ga.Hoole by Kathryn Lasky, the film follows the tale of Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess), a young owl who loves listening to his father.s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga.Hoole. According to his dad, the Guardians are a mythic band of winged warriors who fought the evil Pure Ones to save all of owlkind.
