There was a fragile consensus about "Eyes Wide Shut" when it debuted back in 1999: that it was a bit of a letdown. Audiences had expected to see married co-stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman play out erotic fantasies and were disappointed to experience Stanley Kubrick's oneiric odyssey instead. But while the effect of that disappointment still lingers, as with all Kubrick films, time has seen "Eyes Wide Shut" gain more respect as a multi-layered exploration of sexual desire and naivety.
The film defies precise definition with its mix of dark humor, drama, and erotic imagery. It's based on Arthur Schnitzler's 1926 novella "Traumnovelle" ("Dream Story"), shifting the events of the book from early 20th-century Vienna to late-'90s New York City. Tom Cruise plays Dr. Bill Harford whose wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), sends him reeling into the New York night after revealing she'd considered having an affair. The...

Last year IndieWire shared free scripts available to download from 2016 Oscar Contenders such as “Carol,” “Spotlight,” and “Room,” among others. Now, we have a new list full of screenplays that you can skim over, read how the writer envisioned the film, and then go see how the director interpreted it on the big screen. These scripts are also great for aspiring writers to get ideas for their own stories, as well as see how a Hollywood film screenplay really looks like.
Among the screenplays included in this year’s list include “Captain Fantastic” written by Matt Ross and starring Viggo Mortensen, “The Girl on the Train” penned by Erin Cressida Wilson” and “Hail, Caesar!” written by Joel and Ethan Coen.

One of the few benefits of the frenzied awards race is Hollywood’s outpouring of materials associated with the contenders. Perhaps the biggest perk is the release of full scripts one is able to download legally, directly from the studios.
The first batch has now arrived, ranging from at least one of our favorite scripts this year (Coens‘ Hail, Caesar!) to, well, let’s say, some outside the box choices. As we await the screenplays for Silence, Manchester By the Sea, Arrival, La La Land, 20th Century Women, Moonlight, Jackie, Loving, Hell or High Water, Nocturnal Animals, and more contenders, one can start brushing up now.
We’ll be updating this post as these and more arrive over the coming months, so bookmark the page, but one can check out everything thus far below (right click and save to download, or open in your browser by clicking the titles). To...

The names Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš may not mean anything to you, but they represent patriotism at its finest for the people of the Czech Republic. And once you see the Sean Ellis-directed Anthropoid, you’ll know exactly why.
Co-written by Anthony Frewin, the WWII thriller tells the true story of the aforementioned Gabčík and Kubiš, played by Irish stars Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan, respectively. The British-trained Czech parachutists were among a group of men sent on a secret mission, titled Operation Anthropoid, to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich.
The Reich’s third in command after Hitler and Himmler, Heydrich brought a reign of terror to the former Czechoslovakia that earned him the title of “The Butcher of Prague.” Gabčík and Kubiš’ heroism may have made them legends, but it is their personal and internal struggles that audiences will be able to connect to: Murphy’s Gabčík...

Of all the World War II movies about the plots to kill the architects of the Third Reich, Anthropoid is guilty of being the dullest. And there’s really no excuse for it. Operation Anthropoid was the real name of the mission in which the Czechoslovakian resistance sought out Reinhard Heydrich, Hitler’s third-in-command, to perform the symbolic gesture of killing the rat bastard. The two paratroopers picked for the job are the oddly impassive Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan, nowhere near as sadistic as he was to poor Dakota Johnson...

Just in case you forgot how evil Nazis were (still are?), Sean Ellis plots a two-hour reminder in his latest film, Anthropoid. Ellis and co-writer Anthony Frewin create a true biographical thriller at heart, one that highlights how Czech and Slovak soldiers fought against Hitler’s occupation in Czechoslovakia during WWII. The duo’s passion for historical accuracy is coupled with true-to-life implications, yet the film clunks on and on in the name of depressing, heartbreaking warcrimes. Filmmakers shouldn’t shy away from hard realities, but by the time Ellis counterbalances what seems to be a dragging, sullen narrative, we’re an hour-and-a-half past saving, no matter how grimly captivating a finale is cued up.
In 1942, a secret mission was carried out that would succeed in assassinating SS General Reinhard Heydrich (Detlef Bothe), Hitler’s third-in-command who became known as the “Butcher Of Prague.” Code named Operation: Anthropoid, Czechoslovakia’s...

Jamie Dornan is out of the Red Room and into Nazi Germany for his new spy thriller, Anthropoid. Based on a true story, the period piece tells the incredible tale of "Operation Anthropoid," the code name for a Czechoslovakian-led mission to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution, was the Reich's third in command behind Hitler and Himmler and the leader of Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia. The film follows two soldiers from the Czechoslovakian army-in-exile, Josef Gabcik (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubis (Dornan), who are parachuted into their occupied homeland in December 1941. After first hearing about it in March, we now have the initial look at Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy in director Sean Ellis’s World War II thriller Anthropoid. Ellis wrote the script with Anthony Frewin and is directing the real-life story about the attempted assassination of a prominent Nazi official. The title refers to the codename for the Allied operation to take down Reinhard Heydrich, the high-ranking SS officer who helped oversee the Holocaust. Seen as the number three Nazi – behind Hitler and Himmler – he was naturally a target for assassination. The men chosen for the task were Czechoslovakian army soldiers in exile (Dornan and Murphy), recruited and trained by British forces to parachute into their homeland and target the man known as The Butcher Of Prague. Already aboard alongside the leading pair are Charlotte Le Bon and Anna Geislerová, with the cast swelling before production began to include Toby Jones,...

With news of Steven Spielberg taking over Stanley Kubrick's unmade dream project "Napoleon" as a TV mini-series, a fascinating article over at The Atlantic looks at another Kubrick project that never saw the light. "Swing Under the Nazis," written by Mike Zwerin and published in 1985, caught the director's eye due to a photo therein of a Luftwaffe officer posing with Jewish, black and Gypsy musicians outside a Paris jazz club. Kubrick thought the provocative image had a "Dr. Strangelove" feel, and gave the budding project a similar title: "Dr. Jazz." The German officer in question was Dietrich Schulz-Koehn, who, obsessed with "hot swing," published an underground newsletter reporting on the jazz scenes in cities under Nazi occupation. "Dr. Jazz" was the pen name Schulz-Koehn used for the illegal publication. A script never materialized, but not for lack of Kubrick's passion. The director's longtime assistant Tony Frewin, speaking to the Atlantic,...

As anyone who has watched Stanley Kubrick's Boxes knows, the late, great director was a bit of a pack rat. He was meticulous, obsessive, and detail oriented when it came to saving things. Anything, really. And even though it didn't always make sense to others, Stanley had his reasons. The documentary revealed the contents of several carefully organized boxes, but there are around 1,000 in total. It's easy to imagine the number of uncompleted films the visionary director kept hidden from the public. Kubrick wasn't known for his quick development of projects. He kept a list of potentials, dubbed "Titles in Search of a Script." The filmmaker's assistant Tony Frewin shared the list in the comprehensive Stanley Kubrick Archives, and we've...

The late, great Stanley Kubrick earned notoriety for many things over a nearly 50-year career, chief among them the sluggish pace at which he developed and, most importantly, completed projects. There are a few uncompleted efforts we all know of — Lunatic at Large, Napoleon, and Aryan Papers being the main three — but there are, in reality, any number of half-thought projects he threw around at one point or another. (Not a joke: I would kill your mother to see his Beatles-starring Lord of the Rings adaptation.)
But even us Kubrickphiles don’t have a full grip on just how many stray ideas were kept inside his giant brain. While merely a fun collection that would, in all likelihood, never lead to a feature film whose aspect ratio is debated to the point where you want to put a rattlesnake’s head in your mouth, a new, comprehensive volume on the...

Here's an interesting and fun list that was recently brought to my attention. Apparently, director Stanley Kubrick kept a list of movie titles that he would have liked to one day turn into a script and possible film. The list he kept was called "Titles In Search Of A Script", and it was revealed by Kubrick’s personal assistant Tony Frewin. There is a bit of added commentary that explains where the titles came from.
Check out the list, and let us know which ones you would like to see get turned into a movie.
I Married An Armenian: Said matter-of-factly to us by a woman publicist. Stanley thought it a great title for a 1940s-style Warner Bros. musical. If Only The FÜHRER Knew!: This was a common saying in Germany in the 1930s whenever something went wrong or somebody did something wrong. Used mockingly with the eyes looking upwards.

During their 34-year relationship, Stanley Kubrick and his personal assistant Tony Frewin developed a collection of potential movie titles under the headline: "Titles in search of a script." Lists of Note selected several of their wittiest ideas, with commentary from Frewin following each idea. Some of their most droll titles include: Coffin Not Included (A 1940s noir thriller. When I was researching props for the morgue scene in 'Eyes Wide Shut' I had a catalogue from a company that supplied funeral parlour equipment. One of the illustrations showed a bier with a coffin on it. The caption read: "The Excelsior Bier (coffin not...

Cannes film festival news in brief
A campaign to bring an exhibition devoted to the work of the director Stanley Kubrick to England, where he lived, will be launched in Cannes next week. Kubrick's controversial cult film A Clockwork Orange is to celebrate its 40th birthday at the festival with a screening this week and an appearance from its star, Malcolm McDowell. Kubrick's close friend and assistant for three decades, Anthony Frewin, is to use the occasion to join forces with Roger Morris, the head of Elstree Studios, to call for the popular international exhibition, originally set up in Frankfurt, Germany, to visit Britain. "I think it's time London housed this major exhibition," said Frewin. "Stanley lived in England, near Elstree Studios, for 40 years and brought thousands of dollars into the country and helped launch many careers. It's high time he got the recognition there that he deserves."

Magnolia Pictures
Taking its cue from the real-life exploits of a con man who managed to pass himself off as Stanley Kubrick while the famed filmmaker was directing "Eyes Wide Shut", "Color Me Kubrick" is at best a kitschy "Catch Me If You Can" and at worst a tedious comedy that grows more tiresome by every self-consciously irreverent minute.
Directed by Brian Cook, a Kubrick assistant director, and written by author Anthony Frewin, who received an assistant credit on several of Kubrick's films, this John Malkovich vehicle strains for something droll, but the best it can muster up is a glib ennui that proves anything but colorful.
This Magnolia Pictures release debuts simultaneously on HDNet just ahead of a Tuesday DVD release, but it's unlikely many customers will take a shining to any of the various platforms.
Malkovich sluggishly drags out his trunk of trick accents to portray Alan Conway, a fey, passive-aggressive poseur who assumes the identity of the Bronx-born, U.K. resident despite looking or acting nothing like Kubrick or even knowing all that much about his life or work.
That doesn't seem to stop a parade of dupes -- especially of the young, male variety -- from being taken in by Conway. They take Conway in to their homes and lives, blindly allowing him to leech off of their star-struck good intentions.
Conway's bad behavior ultimately catches up with him, but it's long past the point of caring anymore on the viewer's end.
Despite a lively supporting ensemble, including long-time-no-seen Honor Blackman, Marisa Berenson and Ken Russell, "Color Me Kubrick" is a faux farce that fails to make for a convincing piece of entertainment.

Six months after Stanley Kubrick died, a 'world exclusive' was published - a supposed last interview on the set of Eyes Wide Shut. Odd, thought Anthony Frewin, the director's long-time friend: this didn't sound like Kubrick. Was it a fake? Who was the author? He turns detective and follows the trail of a thoroughly shady character
Adrian Rigelsford? Ever heard of him? Me neither, back then. Funny name, eh? Sounds like someone made it up. Sounds like a character from a British comedy film of the 1950s played, perhaps, by the surly and camp Harold Lang (you'd recognise him all right).
Stanley Kubrick, my boss, died suddenly and unexpectedly at his home in Hertfordshire in March 1999 after completing the editing on what was his final film, Eyes Wide Shut, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. There was still much to do on the picture's post-production and this engaged us full time over the ensuing months.
