“Shining Vale” fans, mark your calendars for Friday, October 13 as that’s when Season 2 premieres on Starz. The timing is perfect for the horror-comedy show to return because Halloween, aka spooky season, is just around the corner. The entire cast is back for these eight new episodes, which were filmed before the writers’ and actors’ strikes. The season premiere, titled “Homecoming,” is written by showrunner Jeff Astrof and directed by Liz Friedlander (all episodes are directed by women). Watch the video trailer above.
Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear lead “Shining Vale” as Patricia “Pat” Phelps, a raunchy romance novelist with writer’s block, and her husband, Terry Phelps. The couple is struggling in their marriage so they decide to move to a new house (one that just so happens to be haunted), along with their two teenage children, Gus Birney as Gaynor and Dylan Gage as Jake. Netflix is working on a new single-camera comedy, Dumped, from writer Heather Flanders (Mixed-ish), director Liz Friedlander (The Rookie), manager-producer Robyn Meisinger (Love in the Time of Corona), and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. According to Deadline, the streamer has opened up a writers room for the show, which is part of the Netflix development process as it does not do pilots. Dumped remains in development with an eye toward a potential straight-to-series order. The half-hour comedy revolves around a hopeless romantic and her best friends who find themselves playing amateur detectives when they investigate her recent ex. This snooping soon sends the group of friends falling down a rabbit hole of lies, deceit, and danger. Flanders, known for her work on Paramount+’s iCarly, ABC’s Mixed-ish, and Fox’s The Cool Kids, wrote the script on spec before Meisinger brought it to Kapital, who attached Friedlander as director.

FX has renewed Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Stories” for a second installment, FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier said Friday at FX’s second (of three) TCA (Television Critics Association) day. Season 2 of the anthology series will debut in 2022.
The “American Horror Story” spinoff debuted in July as the most-watched FX on Hulu series to date. That boast counts just four series, however, the others being “Devs,” “Mrs. America” and “A Teacher.” Still, first place is first place.
The Season 1 finale of “Stories” will premiere Thursday, Aug. 19. Meanwhile, “American Horror Story: Double Feature,” which is the 10th season of “AHS,” is set to premiere Aug. 25 at 10 p.m. on FX. Keeping the partnership alive, the show will be available to stream the following day on FX on Hulu.

Queen Latifah seeks to stake her claim in The Equalizer franchise as she takes on part-time mom and part-time hero Robyn McCall in CBS’ reimagining of the classic 1985 series. While the Girls Trip actress may be the first Black woman portraying the Equalizer in the franchise’s span, powerful Black women seeking to do right by the little guys have made their marks throughout history, she said.

Queen Latifah makes her debut as an under-the-radar crime fighter in the teaser for CBS’s The Equalizer.
The teaser, which dropped on Saturday, unveils the secret life of Latifah’s Robyn McCall. When Robyn’s daughter asks her about abrupt departure from work, Robyn shares the ever-popular nonanswer: “It’s complicated.” However, clips of Robyn protecting herself and others from dangerous situations prove otherwise.
Robyn’s daughter, however isn’t the only one seeking to learn more about her new side gig. Chris Noth’s William Bishop warns that the CIA is also on the hunt for answers as Robyn takes on a new, dangerous lifestyle. While Latifah’s Robyn hesitates to answer questions about why she’s decided to be a new hero, she knows exactly who she is and isn’t afraid to share it.

Exclusive: Adam Goldberg has been tapped as a lead opposite Queen Latifah in The Equalizer reboot, which has a straight-to-series order at CBS to launch this season.
A reimagining of the classic series, The Equalizer stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills to help those with nowhere else to turn.
Goldberg will play Harry Keshegian. He’s not your stereotypical tech dude. Gruffly endearing, lovably annoying, eccentric and a collector of facts and artifacts, he’s paranoid — but for a reason. Unlike conspiracy theorists, because of his experience as a white-hat hacker, he actually knows what the real conspiracies are. He’s as loyal as they come and like a brother to McCall.
The series, which recently started production, also stars Chris Noth, Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Liza Lapira and Laya DeLeon Hayes.

NBCUniversal has selected the directed the 2020-2021 classes for the Female Forward and the Emerging Director Program. The scripted directing initiatives aim to increase representation of female and ethnically diverse male and non-binary directors, respectively, by creating a pipeline into scripted television. The announcement was made by Janine Jones-Clark as Executive Vice President, Inclusion – Talent & Content, NBCUniversal Film, Television and Streaming.
Both initiatives remain unique within the industry in that they are the only network programs to guarantee that participating directors will helm an episode of primetime television by the conclusion of the program. Program directors shadow on up to two episodes of their assigned NBC scripted series before receiving an in-season assignment to helm an episode of the same series.

With many broadcast shows in disarray as a result of the coronavirus production shutdown, a trend is emerging of networks turning to streamers and international waters for content to fill their schedule.
Only hours after Fox announced it will air season 1 of the Spectrum series “L.A.’s Finest” this fall, the CW has gone three better by acquiring the broadcast rights to four different series, among them “Swamp Thing” from DC Universe and “Tell Me a Story” from CBS All Access.
In additional news, the Kevin Williamson-created anthology thriller has been canceled by All Access, Variety has confirmed, meaning that the show will end at two seasons, both of which will be heading to CW for a second-window run and will remain available to stream on All Access.
The other two shows that CW has picked up are “Coroner” (two seasons) and “Dead Pixels” (one season), which hail from Canada and the U.

CBS has picked up three new series for next season: The Equalizer reboot starring Queen Latifah, Silence of the Lambs sequel Clarice starring Rebecca Breeds; and the Chuck Lorre-Marco Pennette multi-camera comedy B Positive headlined by Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford. The dramas have received straight-to-series orders, while B Positive was the only completed broadcast pilot this season, which was decimated by the coronavirus-related Hollywood production shutdown. As part of the pickups, Chris Noth has joined the cast of The Equalizer, and the remaining cast of Clarice, led by Kal Penn, has been revealed.
With the TV industry in flux, CBS has been the most proactive with decisions on pilots, recently passing on drama The Lincoln Lawyer, which had a series production commitment, from A+E Studios and CBS TV Studios, and comedy Fun, from Warner Bros. TV. I hear no other CBS pilots have been killed at this time.

Despite the coronavirus shutting down production on the majority of pilot season, CBS ordered three new series for next season, including its “Silence of the Lambs” sequel from Alex Kurtzman and Queen Latifah’s reboot of “The Equalizer.”
Additionally, the network ordered its latest series from uber-producer Chuck Lorre in “B Positive,” which stars “Silicon Valley” alum Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford about a therapist who becomes friends with his kidney donor.
The “Silence of the Lambs” sequel — titled “Clarice” — will follow Clarice Starling six months after the events of the movie. Rebecca Breeds takes over the role famously played by Jodie Foster in the 1991 movie. “The Equalizer” will see Queen Latifah step into the role played by Edward Woodward in CBS’ 1980s version, and more famously by Denzel Washington in a pair of movies.

CBS has made three series pick ups for the 2020-2021 season.
On the drama side, CBS has ordered the “Equalizer” reboot starring Queen Latifah and “Clarice,” which follows Clarice Starling in the aftermath of “The Silence of the Lambs.” On the comedy side, the network has picked up the multi-cam “B Positive,” which hails from Chuck Lorre.
The shows mark the first shows that were going through the normal pilot season process to get picked up for next season. Nearly all pilots were unable to complete filming before the Covid-19 pandemic forced a suspension of prodution. “B Positive” was one of the only pilots to complete filming before that happened. CBS had originally ordered 14 pilots this season, with both drama “The Lincoln Lawyer” and comedy “Fun” having been passed over in the past week.
CBS renewed the vast majority of its scripted lineup earlier this week, with 23 current shows now set to return next season.

With opening credits that show Little Red Riding Hood being raped by the Big Bad Wolf, “Tell Me a Story” is about as fun and understated as you might expect. The new CBS All Access series from Kevin Williamson, master of dark and icky shows like “Stalker” and “The Following,” attempts to twist classic fairy tales into his dark and icky mindset (never mind that these stories are already pretty grim). When viewed through their fairy-tale origins, the tales are laughably contrived. As standalone stories, they’re as ugly as they are trite.
Season 1 focuses on “The Three Little Pigs,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Little Red Riding Hood.” Sam (Dorian Missick), Eddie (Paul Wesley), and Mitch (Michael Raymond-James) stand in as the not-so-little pigs, forming a hapless gang of jewelry store robbers whose story bookends the premiere. Presumably, Eddie is going through with the heist to fix his leaky roof...

In theory and logline, “Tell Me a Story” is about the intertwining lives of New Yorkers that resemble some of the most famous fairy tales of yore. The new girl in town is an unwitting Red Riding Hood with a wolf tattooed on her thigh, surrounded by predatory men. A brother and sister, long estranged from and somehow still dependent upon each other, find themselves running from forces bigger than them in a twist on Hansel and Gretel. Three men in pig masks attempt a robbery that goes horribly wrong, ending in accidental death and a vengeful man hunting them, threatening to huff and puff and blow their lives to the ground. As per the series’ marketing and self-consciously “edgy” tone, “Tell Me a Story” wants to make sure you know that you’ve never seen these fairy tales play out like this before. And yes: all their lives have...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the pilot episode of The Rookie.
At the beginning of ABC’s new cop drama The Rookie, Nathan Fillion’s character John Nolan is going through a divorce and is on a journey of self-discovery after 40. He asks “Who am I?” to a bank manager/friend. She answers, “The question is: Who do you want to be?” That exchange should lay a foundation for a cop dramedy seething with middle-aged existentialism, but instead, the pilot is an hourlong old-age joke that overwhelms and diminishes John’s self-worth.
Written by executive producer Alexi Hawley and directed by Liz Friedlander, the pilot that premieres at 10 tonight sees John entering the police force after a bank robbery puts his life into perspective. However, as a 45-year-old pursuing his dream of becoming a police officer, he is surrounded by younger recruits who can run circles around him,...

The tide is finally turning for female helmers vying to break into the male-dominated field of broadcast drama directing.
This pilot season marked a breakthrough with 14 of the 42 broadcast drama pilots going to female directors, reversing an alarming trend –four pilots directed by women in 2015, two in 2016 and just one last year.
Eight of the 14 drama pilots, or 57%, went to series. That includes ABC’s The Fix (Larysa Kondracki and The Rookie (Liz Friedlander), CBS’ Red Line (Victoria Mahoney), Fox’s Proven Innocent (Patricia Riggen), NBC’s New Amsterdam (Kate Dennis), The InBetween (Charlotte Sieling) and The Village (Minkie Spiro), and the CW’s Roswell, New Mexico (Julie Plec). Of the eight helmers, three were first pilot directors, and only one, Friedlander, had previously helmed a broadcast pilot.
Meanwhile, 46% of the drama pilots directed by men this year (13 out of 28) were picked up to series..
Drama pilots traditionally have been one of the toughest directing gigs to land, with the networks and studios imposing very high standards for level of accomplishments required for it. Drama pilots are a risky bet, costing $7 million-$8 million and sometimes as much as $15 million, and networks have been very conservative, handing jobs to either a big feature helmer or a veteran TV pilot director with a proven track record.
The problem with the dearth of broadcast drama pilots directed by women was trifold — there weren’t enough well-established female directors — in features or drama series — who would be getting straight pilot offers; there weren’t that many female episodic drama directors who have enough experience to land open pilot-directing assignments; and there wasn’t strong enough will on the part of the networks to give such helmers assignments.
All of that started to change over the past 1-2 years with Initiatives like NBC’s Female Forward, designed to give female directors the opportunity to get training and helm episodes of NBC series, and Ryan Murphy’s Half, aiming to hire 50% female directors to work on all his television shows, as well as series like Ava DuVernay’s Own drama series Queen Sugar, which employs all female directors, almost all of whom are women of color.
Exemplifying the progress is NBC, which was in the back of the pack last year when none of its 13 drama and comedy pilots was directed by a woman. This year, out of NBC’s 15 pilots, almost half, seven — three dramas and four comedies — were directed by women. What’s more, all three NBC drama pilots directed by women went to series, a 100% success ratio.
There have been a string of milestones for female directors over the past year, including Patty Jenkins setting a new boxoffice record with Wonder Woman and Victoria Mahoney, who just got her Red Line pilot picked up to series by CBS, recently becoming the first African American woman to direct a Star Wars movie when she was tapped as Jj Abrams’ second unit director on Star Wars: Episode IX.
The strong showing for female drama directors this broadcast season is just the next step toward an even playing field.

Billy Magnussen (Game Night) is set for a lead role in CBS All Access’ straight-to-series psychological thriller Tell Me a Story, from Kevin Williamson and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. In addition, Liz Friedlander (Conviction) has been tapped to direct and executive produce the first two episodes.
Written by Williamson, Tell Me a Story takes the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller. Set in modern day New York City, the first season of this serialized drama interweaves “The Three Little Pigs,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Jack and the Beanstalk” into an epic and subversive tale of love, loss, greed, revenge and murder.
Magnussen will play Nick, a young high school teacher who’s handsome, seductive, and quite possibly a wolf in sheep’s clothing. After a wild night with a girl he met at a nightclub results in a...

Castle star Nathan Fillion is officially back on ABC with a new light crime drama series. The network has given a formal series order to Fillion’s pilot The Rookie, from former Castle executive producer/co-showrunner Alexi Hawley, Entertainment One and ABC Studios. It marks the second new ABC series picked up for next season, joining The Goldbergs spinoff.
In a competitive situation, ABC nabbed The Rookie pitch in October from the Mark Gordon Company with a straight-to-series order.. But like the previous star-driven Mark Gordon project with a straight-to-series commitment, drama Designated Survivor, toplined by Kiefer Sutherland, ABC still had the right to make a final decision after seeing the pilot. I hear the deadline for that was today, and the network has exercised its option to go to series.

The 2018 pilot season is shaping up to be a landmark year for women behind the camera.
Female creators and directors saw gains virtually across the board, as networks ramp up efforts to include more women in the pilot process. As Variety previously reported, the Time’s Up and Me Too movements have played important roles this season, with the networks all looking for ways to increase female representation.
According to multiple TV literary agents who spoke with Variety, there was a clear shift within the networks this year to increase the number of women behind the camera, particularly in the director’s chair. One source also noted that the studios exerted “immense pressure” to increase the number of female directors this season.
ABC has 13 female creators on 9 of their 23 pilots this year, up from 9 creators in 2017. Of those, five are comedies, including originals from Liz Meriwether and J.J. Philbin, Diablo Cody,...
