British TV presenter Fiona Phillips announced in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia.
Now, in an interview, the 62-year-old former TV host has revealed she believes her 11-year run of presenting breakfast television could have caused her to get the disease at a relatively young age.
Phillips, who used to get up at around 3am for her shifts presenting ITV breakfast show GMTV between 1997 and 2008, told Woman&Home Magazine:
“I ask myself why I got this dreadful disease. I wonder whether all the years of getting up so early when I was working on GMTV contributed to me getting Alzheimer’s so young.”
Phillips shared that she had benefited from being put on a drugs trial in an attempt to slow down her symptoms, a protocol she said seemed to be working.
She said: “I’m taking part in a revolutionary drug trial that’s trying to find a cure.

A U.K. parliamentary inquiry that convened to gather evidence for the upcoming media bill pulled no punches, with top TV executives being probed on Tuesday.
Though the proceedings began with the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee chair Caroline Dinenage stating that the session was not about the “widely reported issues” at ITV show “This Morning,” committee members ploughed on nevertheless. (ITV CEO Carolyn McCall has been called to give evidence to the committee next week over an affair between former ITV anchor Phillip Schofield and a young employee.)
Appearing before the committee, Magnus Brooke, group director of strategy, policy and regulation at ITV, was asked about the duty of care that the editorial team and senior managers provide to staff, especially young staff, at “This Morning” and ITV in general. In response, Brooke said: “There’s a very sophisticated and significant system of safeguarding and duty of care at ITV,...

Martin Frizell, the Editor of embattled ITV daytime show This Morning, has been rebuked by his employer for “extremely ill-judged” remarks about eggplants when questioned over the Phillip Schofield scandal.
Magnus Brooke, ITV’s Director of Strategy, Policy and Regulation, said the commercial broadcaster would not endorse comments made by Frizell to a journalist on Monday.
Frizell was questioned on his doorstep by a Sky News reporter about allegations of a toxic work environment on This Morning. “I tell you what’s toxic,” he replied. “[What] I’ve always found toxic is aubergine. Do you like aubergine?”

As U.K. network ITV launches an external review into the circumstances surrounding “This Morning” anchor Phillip Schofield’s “unwise but not illegal” relationship with a young employee, many are wondering how the long-time host – a staple of British daytime television – went from ITV golden boy to Tellyland exile in a matter of weeks.
It’s a storyline that could have been ripped from Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s Apple TV+ hit “The Morning Show.” An older male anchor handpicks a glamorous, younger and – according to unkind whispers – malleable blonde to be his co-host after falling out with her predecessor.
Fifteen years later the young blonde (reportedly) turns on him, ousting him from the show following a string of scandals that were beginning to taint her brand. But her victory may be short-lived as the married male anchor drops the bombshell that he had an affair with a young...

Kim Woodburn has said that Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield should have been fired from This Morning over “queuegate”.
The Celebrity Big Brother star, 80, shared her thoughts on the drama during a recent appearance on the Not My Bagg podcast.
Last year, the ITV presenters found themselves in the middle of a scandal – dubbed “queuegate” – after they were accused of “jumping the queue” to see the Queen’s coffin lying-in-state before her funeral.
Both Schofield and Willoughby denied the accusations, stating that they would “never jump a queue”.
ITV supported the pair, claiming that they were “there in a professional capacity as part of the world’s media to report on the event”.
Speaking about the incident, Woodburn told hosts Joe and George Baggs: “They were not asked to cover the Queen’s funeral.
“They sneaked in and they put these imitation press things they got, they sneaked in...

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s names weren’t on the media list to see the Queen lying-in-state, a new report has claimed.
The This Morning presenters have found themselves at the middle of a scandal – dubbed “queuegate” – after they were accused of “jumping the queue” to see the Queen’s coffin lying-in-state before her funeral.
Willoughby and Schofield denied the accusations, saying that they would “never jump a queue”. Despite this, more than 71,000 people have signed a petition calling on ITV to “axe” the presenters over the alleged queue-jumping.
However, according to new reports, Willoughby and Schofield’s names were not on the accreditation list in the first place, causing a “hoo-ha” at the lying-in-state.
Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, a source involved in processing the media list claimed that members of the production team’s names were used instead.

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield will soon be reunited on This Morning - and the show has received a swanky new makeover to mark the occasion.
Viewers will be greeted with a brand new logo, title sequence and studio layout when the presenting duo return to screens at 10.30am on September 1.
A new teal-coloured logo with gold water ripple effect reflects the show's current home on London's Southbank, as well as its Liverpool Dock riverside origin.
The show's new opening title sequence will show the presenters' daily journey to the studio, with Willoughby stopping to buy a magazine during her commute, and Schofield pausing at a coffee shop to take a selfie with customers.
The titles will conclude with the pair walking down a corridor heading towards the studio.
Meanwhile, the studio itself will still feature a view of the River Thames, but a new open plan layout will provide...

ITV's Loose Women is launching its own book club.
Loose Books will see the panellists take it in turns to select their favourite book for discussion on a month-by-month basis.
The studio audience will also be invited to join in the discussion, as well as viewers at home via the show's social media pages.
Coleen Nolan has selected The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins as the club's first book. The psychological thriller was published in January.
The panellists are free to choose any book whether it be fact or fiction. They can also pick classic novels or brand new releases to discuss with their co-stars.
Editor of Loose Women Martin Frizell said: "We think of our Loose Women viewers as part of a club and so it's a natural extension to widen that into a book club.

Kate Garraway has insisted that she will not mind working with ex-husband Ian Rumsey on GMTV. Earlier this month, it was announced that Rumsey is to become the breakfast show's new editor in June, taking over from predecessor Martin Frizell. Writing in her New magazine column, Garraway commented: "A lot has been made of the fact that my ex-husband Ian Rumsey is the new editor of GMTV, but I can assure you, it won't be as awkward as it sounds. "Ian and I split up eight years ago after three years of marriage, and while we've (more)...

Fiona Phillips has insisted that she has no regrets over her decision to quit GMTV. The presenter stepped down from the morning show after 12 years in December after realising that she wanted to spend more time with her family. Phillips, 48, and her husband Martin Frizell, who edits GMTV, have two sons together, Nathaniel, ten, and Mackenzie, seven. Reflecting on the change in her life, Phillips told New! magazine: "At night, I used to put the children to bed and I would say to Mackenzie: 'You've got five seconds to choose a book!'
"I would think: 'This is awful - making him hurry because I'm tired'. Now I've got all the time in the world to read and talk to them." (more)...

Fiona Phillips has said that marriage pressures contributed to her decision to quit GMTV after 15 years. The host announced plans to leave the show in September, with Sky presenter Emma Crosby recently revealed as her replacement. Phillips previously said her decision was primarily due to her father's Alzheimer's.
