You remind me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the – woah! If there’s one thing we can’t shake from 1986’s Labyrinth, it’s not the remarkably inventive set design, the memorable characters from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop or the fantastic early performance from Jennifer Connelly. It’s the real scene-stealer and childhood-destroyer from Labyrinth – David Bowie’s junk. And if you thought you couldn’t rid your mind of it, imagine having to keep tabs on its size during filming.
Brian Henson – son of director Jim Henson – recently told ComicBook.com that Bowie’s “codpiece” actually changes sizes throughout the movie, which surely only the most devoted Labyrinth fans would have noticed. “The scene where it’s most prevalent I think, is the scene where David pretends he’s a beggar, and then pulls off the costume and stands up, and it’s the Goblin King.

Fantasy illustrator Brian Froud began his collaboration with Jim Henson for the 1982 movie “The Dark Crystal,” designing the entire look for the world of Thra filled with strange creatures, plants, and structures. Gelflings themselves are odd, fey beings smaller than humans and yet similar enough to mankind to seem familiar. This presented a challenge when it came to translating the drawings into three-dimensional puppets.
“They are our human representatives in a strange world where everything is really odd, where everything is alive, where rocks move and sing and everything is not quite what it seems,” said Froud. “We had to remind the sculptors that these are not human, that these are more kin to the animals. The challenge was to get them to have an other world quality, at the same time to be empathetic, because they go through a lot, and they are telling their story as our story.

Move over, “Game of Thrones.” What’s taking so long, “Lord of the Rings”? Netflix has brought “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” to TV, and it’s the bewitching and immersive experience that high fantasy fans have been waiting for.
Jim Henson and Frank Oz first performed alchemy in 1982 with the dark fantasy film “The Dark Crystal,” which gained a cult following in the ensuing 37 years. Now, the spell has been handed down to a new group of practitioners who’ve expanded and even improved upon the original. “Age of Resistance” transforms pointy-faced Gelflings into dauntless, epic heroes and creates a world that thrums with so much life that viewers will also hear the song of Thra themselves. Oh, what a time to be alive and a puppet!
Drawing upon “Dark Crystal” research texts, creation myth short stories, and Ya prequel novels, co-executive producers Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, and...

“The Dark Crystal,” the family-oriented fantasy drama directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, was groundbreaking when Universal released it in 1982. Now a cult classic, it offered an original blend of Brothers Grimm-style fairy-tale magic and state-of-the-art animatronic puppetry.
Now, 37 years later, Netflix and the Jim Henson Co. revive the world dreamed up by Oz and Henson with “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” a 10-episode prequel series directed by Louis Leterrier (“Now You See Me”) that revisits planet Thra and its mysterious inhabitants via tactile design, puppetry and hand-crafted effects.
“We wanted to make sure what we were doing felt right,” says Toby Froud, design supervisor on “Age of Resistance,” which drops Aug. 30. Froud has a long history with “Dark Crystal”: His father, Brian Froud, was the acclaimed concept artist on the original film, and Froud himself starred as the baby kidnapped by David Bowie in Oz and Henson’s follow-up project,...

As set visits go, there’s never been one quite like our day spent in Thra, for The Dark Crystal. From the wondrous mind of Jim Henson, anyone over a certain age – and with an unwavering sense of adventure – will have become completely immersed in this world back when the original film was released in 1982. Now, not far off 40 years later, it’s time for us to revisit this magical kingdom, by way of a 10-part Netflix series entitled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
We set off to a newly-opened studio complex on the outskirts on London, greeted instantly by a vast room full of tiny creations. It was full of animators, there were sketches on the wall, small models adorning the floors, and you had to be careful where you stepped (or what you leant against). The executive producers of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance talk about how Jim Henson’s vision comes alive in the Netflix prequel.
There’s something about The Dark Crystal’s artistry in presenting characters and creatures that are designed and fabricated as fantastical figures controlled by human hands rather than by computer that transcends whatever motion capture or sophisticated visual effects can accomplish. With The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Jim Henson’s darkest tale will return to a more vibrant time in the planet of Thra’s history, and the marriage of puppetry, practical effects, and CGI will be a wonder to behold when the series arrives on Netflix on August 30, 2019. Creators Will Matthews and Jeffrey Addiss along with executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach told us all about how the 1982 film made the journey to the small screen.

Netflix takes viewers back to Thra for Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Like most works that are ahead of their time, The Dark Crystal was initially met with confusion upon its release in December 1982. Co-directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, the film was a shocking experience for families who expected Muppet-esque warmth and were instead thrust into the dark fantasy world of Thra. For this was a picture that dealt with adult themes like genocide and featured one of the decade’s most notorious sources of nightmare fodder in the form of the Skeksis, the movie’s ultra-creepy villains.
Although moderately successful upon release, the movie was hardly the cultural touchstone Henson was hoping for. The Dark Crystal had long been a passion project for him, and even though it underperformed, he was unwilling to abandon the fantasy genre.
Naturally, a film as weird as The Dark Crystal,...

Frankly, that sparse poster copy would have been enough to tempt most punters into the cinema in 1994, but a werewolf movie starring a man who already appeared to be mid-transformation in real life would have been a deal-sealer for many a horror aficionado. Which is perhaps why, when appraising Smiling Jack’s extensive filmography, Wolf is often drudged up from the file marked ‘oh yeah, I forgot about that one’.

Considerable production power (courtesy of Star Wars’ producer Gary Kurtz) was brought to bear on this 1982 fantasy epic from Jim Henson in what is essentially a 93 minute Muppet Show episode made on a grand scale and with a far grimmer atmosphere. Henson’s dream project was impeccably conceived with the help of English fantasy artist Brian Froud and a huge crew of wizardly animatronics experts. Though it faced considerable box office opposition at its release (in the form of E.T. and Tootsie), Henson’s labor of love still managed to find its audience.

We never got The Dark Crystal 2 on the big screen in the end - but the story is coming to comics...
When it was released back in December of 1982, Jim Henson and Frank Oz's The Dark Crystal was something of a curiousity. Faithful fans of The Muppets wondered why the pair spent their time building an elaborate fantasy world on screen when they could have been working on another project featuring Kermit and company, and the rest of the audience wasn't sure what to make of the odd vision that was unfolding on screen. (Plus, some parents were concerned that the movie would be too disturbing for their kids and stayed away). Although the movie made its budget back, it never quite had the initial critical or pop cultural impact that Henson and Oz were hoping for, and was at first largely viewed as a compelling disappointment.

Like all the best fairy tales, Jim Henson’s 1986 film Labyrinth is a much more grown-up effort than its fantasy trappings let on. Sure, it’s directed by the man who introduced both The Muppets and Sesame Street to the world, but don’t be fooled by all of the puppets and cute creatures and catchy songs: this is a film geared at children but actually about the end of childhood. Bittersweet, that.
On its face, Labyrinth offers a traditional take on the hero’s journey codified by Joseph Campbell: Jennifer Connelly’s sixteen-year-old Sarah wishes her baby brother would be taken away by Goblin King Jareth (the late, great David Bowie) and, when he is, must travel to a fantasy realm to rescue him. On a deeper and darker level, however, the screenplay by Monty Python’s own Terry Jones is the story of a young woman maturing into an adult,...

Labyrinth will be screened Saturday March 5th, as part of Movies for Foodies, a regular film series put on by the chefs at Tenacious Eats. The event will take place at Marine Corps League Banquet Hall (5700 Leona St, St. Louis 63116)
Tenacious Eats ‘Movies for Foodies’ is a one-of-a-kind event where food is prepared and plated in front of you, in the form of a 5-course gourmet meal, while you watch a film on the big screen. Tenacious Eats only works with locally produced food procured by them and hard-to-find ingredients imported from places that specialize in them.
For each new film, the folks at Tenacious Eats write a new menu specific to that movie’s story. Sometimes the menu is literal and sometimes it is inspired interpretation. In all cases, each dining experience is different because each film is different.

Every now and then, I find myself suddenly and unexpectedly angry at George Lucas, but not for reasons that have anything to do with "Star Wars." There has been a refrain we've heard from him over and over during the past couple of decades, where he talks about returning to his roots and making experimental films that could never exist inside the studio system, movies that aren't created to be commercial product, but that come from a very personal place. And over and over, those comments lead nowhere and nothing happens. I'd love to see him do it, though. I have a huge fondness for "Thx-1138," Lucas's first feature film, which evolved out of a student film he made. I take Lucas at his word that commercial filmmaking was never meant to be the complete detour it became after "American Graffiti" and "Star Wars" both blew up into mega-hits,...

Peter Segal is set to direct a new film being developed at Disney called Goblins. The project is based on a children’s book called Goblins! Froud is a Hugo-winning artist who worked as Jim Henson’s conceptual designer on Labyrinth and Dark Crystal.

Labyrinth fans: do you ever sit around and wonder what happened to the actor who played Toby Williams, the infant brother of Jennifer Connelly’s Sarah who is kidnapped by David Bowie’s Jareth, the Goblin King? The end of the film shows little Toby safe and snug in his bed, but what did the child actor do when he grew up? The answer can be found in this trailer for the live-action puppet short film Lessons Learned. Actor and puppet maker Toby Froud is the son of Brian Froud and Wendy Midener — two of the renowned artists who worked on the Jim Henson-directed film and created some of its memorable characters (the “junk lady,” for starters). It turns out that young Toby was bitten by the puppeteering bug and grew up to attend the Muppet...

Looking back, it’s difficult to believe that the cult classic “Labyrinth” was actually a failure at the box office. The movie was conceived after the release of “The Dark Crystal”, an earlier collaboration between Jim Henson and artist Brian Froud. Wanting to work on another project together, and taking inspiration once again from Froud’s artwork, “Labyrinth” was born. Influenced by such timeless tales as “Alice in Wonderland” and “Outside Over There”, “Labyrinth” tells the story of Sarah Williams (Jennifer Connolly), a teenage girl who won’t let go of her childhood. Forced to stay home and take care of her baby step-brother, Toby (Toby Froud), Sarah unwittingly wishes Toby be taken away by goblins. When Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie), obliges Sarah, she tries to take back her wish. But some things cannot be unsaid, and Sarah is forced to solve the labyrinth before Toby is changed into a goblin forever.

Once upon a time there existed a cinematic landscape where not every feature-length fairy tale movie was drawn from a classic story, and the descriptor “fractured fairy tale” didn’t just mean gross-out humor and a Scottish-accented Mike Myers playing a big green ogre. While some of those films have certainly succeeded (this writer has a soft spot for the first “Shrek”), the kind of tale that the likes of the Brothers Grimm would collect in their oeuvre of beloved folklore was often of the darker-hued variety – pitting characters in bleak struggles that would see them rise from the ashes as better individuals for it in the end. Yes, the stories were simple, but they also served as a basis for many of the storytelling tropes that are used today – and may have influenced a few of our own moral compasses, with the fables acting as parables for life's lessons.

Comic publisher Archaia revealed that the new "tragic" story will be set before the events of the 1986 film directed by Muppets creator Jim Henson, but will be "true to the spirit of the original", which also starred Jennifer Connelly. Editor-in-chief Stephen Christy told Entertainment Weekly: "We can say it's a prequel. It's the story of how Jareth is brought into the Labyrinth for the first time. So, it doesn't deal with Sarah, it doesn't deal with Toby or anything like that. "It's a very tragic story that is the opposite of Sarah's, which has triumph at the end. Chicago – After unleashing the most aggressive and exuberantly playful marketing campaign in recent memory, “The Muppets” is gearing to take over Thanksgiving weekend. Yet since Jim Henson’s brilliant and beloved creations haven’t been given a decent vehicle in nearly two decades, Muppet fans are holding their collective breath that director James Bobin’s musical comedy will be a much-belated return to form. Co-writer/star Jason Segel’s passion for Henson’s original vision is mightily encouraging, though veteran Muppeteer Frank Oz’s negative reaction to the script appears to be a bad omen.
Regardless, this latest cinematic effort has the power to introduce new generations to Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great, and the entire legacy of Henson’s groundbreaking work. His ingenious fusions of puppetry, marionettes and animatronics had remarkable screen presence that rivaled the charisma and nuances of any human co-star. The...

Labyrinth is 25 years old today. Louisa looks back at a classic fantasy movie, starring Jennifer Connelly, lots of puppets, and David Bowie in very tight trousers…
Comedian Robin Ince once said it was impossible for people under forty to experience nostalgia. Real nostalgia meant pain, he argued, a gut-aching, punch in the chest, yearning for home, youth, and a life that no longer existed. Nostalgia was the feeling you had when, having come face to face with the unalterable fact of ageing and mortality, you recognised the things you'd lost, and desperately wanted them back.
The under-forties hadn't yet the distance from their youth to be truly get nostalgia, Ince reasoned. When the under-forties think they're experiencing nostalgia, he said, they're just remembering stuff.
He's got a point. While it might make for a decent pub chat, the loss of Pigeon Street and Mallet's Mallet hasn't left me with any inconsolable yearnings.

Geek Christmas comes in May. No, really. If you are or know a comic book geek, then you know that Free Comic Book Day was on Saturday, May 7, this year. It’s one of my favorite days of the year because I get free comic books, which means that I get to try out all kinds of new titles without having to shell out a whole lot of money. It would also be the one Saturday a year that you’ll find me not just perfectly willing but eager to set my alarm clock so I can be sure that I get up on time.
I refused to miss Free Comic Book Day this year. I’ve only missed two of them, and there have been 10 now. Last year was one of the ones that I missed. I knew that I was going to, though, because I had planned a little vacation.
