When director Michael Winner and screenwriter Wendell Mayes adapted Brian Garfield's novel "Death Wish," it's doubtful that they had any idea they'd be launching a film franchise that would change the landscape of vigilante thrillers forever, and solidify Charles Bronson as one of the greatest stars of action cinema. The "Death Wish" films start out as a twisted character study of a man named Paul Kersey as he slowly descends into a life of vengeance and violence, bearing arms and serving as a one-man judge, jury, and executioner. There's a real allure to righting wrongs outside of the American justice system, but as Kearsey's arc shows, his desire to kill has perhaps always been a part of him -- which makes him part of the problem.
As the franchise went on, the "Death Wish" films cared less and less about the moral conundrums of its hero and instead wanted...

1974 was quite a year for cinema; 50 years later, Netflix (of all places) is celebrating the golden jubilee.
In recognition of the anniversary, the streamer on Wednesday launched a new, dedicated content row (and direct URL link) with the first films being honored under its new “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection” banner. Each of the 14 films came to Netflix this month by way of Warner Bros., Paramount, or Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.
The 1974 collection includes “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Black Belt Jones,” “Blazing Saddles,” “California Split,” “Chinatown,” “The Conversation,” “Death Wish,” “The Gambler,” “The Great Gatsby,” “It’s Alive,” “The Little Prince,” “The Lords of Flatbush,” “The Parallax View,” and “The Street Fighter” (“Gekitotsu! Satsujin ken”).
Netflix doesn’t plan to stop with disco’s heyday. In April, the streaming service will do the same for films from 1984 (turning 40); July will celebrate 1994 movies (turning 30); and in October...

Locked and loaded with a decent screenplay, Michael Winner and Charles Bronson acquit themselves well in this brutal 1974 hit that launched a decade’s worth of nasty vigilante movies. The lynch-mob formula presents crimes so awful that the audience demands violent retribution. The shock is that this incitement to ‘fight back’ is not direct right-wing propaganda — vigilantism is glamorized but not endorsed. A fine supporting cast includes Vincent Gardenia, Steven Keats and unexpected treats like Olympia Dukakis and Jeff Goldblum. “Fill your hand!”

Brian Garfield, an author best known for his novel “Death Wish” which spawned a popular movie franchise of the same name, died Dec. 29 at his home in Pasadena, Variety has confirmed. He was 79.
After his birth to parents Frances O’Brien and George Garfield, Garfield grew up in Arizona where he wrote his first novel “Range Justice” at the age of 18.
Soon after, he began writing prolifically, producing more than 70 books and printing more than 20 million copies world wide. His most popular work, “Death Wish,” also led to the creation of one of Hollywood’s longest-running film franchises starring Charles Bronson as well as a 2018 reboot with Bruce Willis.
After seeing the film, Garfield was famously disappointed, prompting the author to write a sequel to the novel in 1975 titled “Death Sequence.” Like its predecessor, the novel was adapted into a film in 2007 by director James Wan and actor Kevin Bacon.

Bruce Willis gets revenge in the new bullet-riddled trailer for Death Wish, director Eli Roth's remake of the 1974 action film.
The clip opens with a grim warning that, of the 125 million families living in the U.S., one-fourth "will become victims of a crime." The scene then shifts to the home of Dr. Paul Kersey (Willis), whose wife is murdered and daughter attacked during a home invasion. When the crime goes unsolved, the protagonist sets out for justice.
"I love my family. I failed to protect them," Willis intones in a voiceover.

Hey, you might not be aware of this – and honestly, no worries if not, we’ve all got a lot going on – but Hopscotch is the greatest movie ever. This is an irrefutable fact, and I’m glad I was able to save you from all kinds of hand-wringing. If your hands are already getting pretty wrung, though, feel free to pop in Hopscotch just to check. I’ll wait.
Okay, so we’re all set then? I can come clean – in the pure, cleansing light of day, Hopscotch may not literally be the greatest movie ever made. But it feels that way every second whenever I watch it. Walter Matthau as a CIA agent outwitting the CIA and every other national intelligence agency? You couldn’t ask for a more pleasurable premise. Anytime you can get a protagonist the audience likes but doesn’t fully understand, you’re on the right track.

(Aton) The trailer for the ‘Death Wish‘ remake has finally landed. The Eli Roth-directed vehicle stars Bruce Willis as Dr. Paul Kersey, a Chicago surgeon who goes out for revenge when his wife, (Elizabeth Shue) and daughter (Camila Morrone) are attacked in a vicious home invasion.
The original ‘Death Wish‘, which stared Charles Bronson and spawned four sequels, is considered to be a classic among revenge flicks, if not cult status at the least. The remake was written by Joe Carnahan, and will mark Roth’s first venture into the action/revenge genre. Carnahan was originally set to direct, but after creative differences Roth stepped in to helm the picture.
The film also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Jack Kesy, Dean Norris, and Mike Epps. Here’s the first full trailer.
Here’s the official synopsis for the remake:

A generic spy story becomes an inspired light comedy with the application of great talent led by the star-power of Walter Matthau. Matthau’s CIA spook hooks up with old flame Glenda Jackson to retaliate against his insufferable CIA boss (Ned Beatty) with a humiliating tell-all book about the agency’s dirty tricks history. Matthau’s sloppy, slouchy master agent is a comic delight; Ronald Neame’s stylishly assured direction makes a deadly spy chase into a wholly pleasant romp.

Bruce Willis goes on a crusade for justice after his wife is murdered, in the new trailer for Death Wish.
The film takes place in Chicago, where an overloaded police department appears unable to solve violent crimes. Like so many big screen heroes before him, Willis decides to take matters into his own hands, buying a gun, tracking down the perpetrators one by one and eliminating them. The teaser is filled with shoot-outs, torture scenes and leathery one-liners from Willis. "Who are you?" one drug-dealer asks him. "Your last customer,...

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures have released the first trailer for director Eli Roth’s reimagining of the classic 1974 revenge thriller Death Wish.
The original film starred Charles Bronson and it became his most famous role when he was age 52. He played Paul Kersey, a successful New York architect who turns into a crime-fighting vigilante after his wife is murdered and his daughter sexually assaulted. This successful movie spawned various sequels over the next two decades, all starring Bronson. (Trailer)
Updated from the original novel by Brian Garfield, director Eli Roth and screenwriter Joe Carnahan’s (The Grey, Narc) bring the latest version:

"They came for his family. Now he's coming for them."
Bruce Willis shoots people first and asks questions later in this first trailer for the remake of Death Wish. He goes on a killing spree of revenge after his wife is murdered. The movie was directed by Eli Roth, and this is a different kind of film for him. Roth is mostly known for the horror films that he's made. Death Wish is more of an action-thriller, an action-thriller that involves lots of killing. So, it seems like something Roth would enjoy making.
I'm not the biggest fan of Roth, but I enjoy watching Bruce Willis movies and the screenplay was written ben Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, The Grey). Those are the two main reasons that I'll end up watching this movie. Judging by the trailer, the movie looks like it could be fun an entertaining, but it...

After reveling in the horror genre for virtually all of his directorial career, Eli Roth is switching gears slightly with his next project as he heads into action-thriller territory with a remake of 1974’s Death Wish. Scripted by Joe Carnahan and starring Bruce Willis, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a November release.
“We wanted to bring back that great, classic Bruce Willis we all know and love and just do a fun, badass update of a revered classic,” Roth told Yahoo! Movies. “I wanted to bring Bruce back to that Fifth Element, Unbreakable, Die Hard glory and have him craft another iconic performance, and I really think he did it. I mean I really think this can be his Taken. The fun is watching him go crazy and watching someone slowly move the moral goal post.”

A handful of first look images has emerged along with the firs trailer cor Eli Roth’s remake of the 1974 Death Wish with Bruce Willis looking very much like he does in most of his action outings.
In the original film Charles Bronson took the lead in the iconic franchise which was based on the 1972 novel from Brian Garfield. Bruce Willis will play the lead, Paul Kersey, in Roth’s remake which sees the action move from New York to Chicago due to a rise in homicides. Also in Roth’s remake, the central character has had a change in his profession from architect to a surgeon.
Starring alongside Willis in the remake no one asked for (the story focuses on a mild-mannered father is transformed into a killing machine after his wife is murdered and his daughter raped and left comatose…) is Vincent D’Onofrio as Frank Kersey,...

Bruce Willis has a Death Wish.
As a matter of fact, he’s had one for a while, given he first signed on to headline Paramount and MGM’s long-brewing remake more than a year ago. Creative troubles plagued the project during its formative stages in development, when co-directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado made for the exit door. Thankfully, it didn’t take too long before the studios drafted in a replacement in the form of Eli Roth, instigating a casting process that has already roped in the likes of Vincent D’Onofrio, comedian/actor Mike Epps, and Breaking Bad‘s Dean Norris. Now, we finally have word of Death Wish‘s official due date: November 22nd, 2017.
Pitched as an old-timey action flick based on Brian Garfield’s novel, which also inspired the 1974 cult classic of the same name, Death Wish follows a “man named Paul Kersey (Willis) whose...

In case you forgot, Annapurna Pictures is producing a remake of MGM's classic Charles Bronson Death Wish film franchise. Bruce Willis is set to star in the film that's being directed by Eli Roth (Hostel, Knock Knock). I've never really been the biggest fan of Roth's films because they have no real substance, but I'm a fan of Bruce Willis, so I've gotta watch it.
There are no details on the remake, but the original 1974 film was based on the Brian Garfield novel about a vigilante who hunts down and stops criminals after his wife is murdered. Here's a description from the book:
For just a handful of money, they savagely beat Paul's wife and daughter, leaving his wife dead and his daughter comatose. Grief-stricken and forced to reevaluate his views, Benjamin becomes disillusioned with society and plots his revenge on the perpetrators, whom the police are unable to bring to justice.

Late summer is all about reflection over at The Criterion Collection, as the library is spending August offering up a handful of unsung classics and new look at some longtime favorites.
Michael Curitz’s “The Breaking Point,” a mostly overlooked Hemingway adaptation, starring John Garfield and Patricia Neal, will be available on Blu-ray for the first time, while Sacha Guitry’s “La poison” arrives on home video for the first time ever. Elsewhere, Mike Leigh’s revelatory “Meantime” is getting a 2K restoration, all the better to enjoy the early work of Tim Roth and Gary Oldman. That’s not all for Oldman fans, however, as Alex Cox’s “Sid & Nancy” hits the collection with a brand new 4K digital restoration. Finally, Walter Matthau stars in the charming comedy “Hopscotch,” also available on Blu-ray in a 2K digital restoration.
Below is the complete list of August additions, with descriptions provided by Criterion.

Comedian and actor Mike Epps has climbed aboard Eli Roth’s Death Wish remake, joining the likes of Bruce Willis, Vincent D’Onofrio and Breaking Bad‘s Dean Norris.
First reported by Deadline, the outlet confirmed earlier today that Epps – best known for The Hangover, Fifty Shades of Black and Uncle Buck – will assume the part of Dr. Chris Salgado, a playboy doctor and close friend to Willis’ Paul Kersey. Very much considered to be the anchor point of MGM and Paramount’s redo, Death Wish will open at a time when Kersey’s entire livelihood “has been destroyed by a violent crime against his wife and daughter. Frustrated that the bad guys for the crime were never brought to justice, Kersey starts hunting them down.” Not bad for a mild-mannered New York City architect.

Daredevil and Heisenberg, look away now. Deadline is reporting that the Eli Roth-directed Death Wish has enlisted Vincent D’Onofrio and Breaking Bad‘s Dean Norris.

Actor Bruce Willis, will star in a remake of "Death Wish", to be directed by Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado, rebooting director Michael Winner's 1974 vigilante action feature:
The original Paramount Pictures thriller was loosely based on the novel "Death Wish" by author Brian Garfield, following former WWII and Korean war vet, 'Paul Kersey'.
Kersey, a 'liberal' thinking architect, becomes an unstoppable late-night vigilante killer, targeting muggers, after a deadly assault against his wife and daughter pushes him over the deep end.
At the time of its initial release, critics were displeased with the film, considering it an 'immoral threat to society' and an encouragement of 'antisocial behavior'.
Despite the negative reviews, producers sensed the 'primal' appeal of the premise with audiences and released five "Death Wish" films.
Titles include "Death Wish II" (1982), "Death Wish 3" (1985), "Death Wish 4: The Crackdown" (1987) and "Death Wish V: The Face of Death...

Director Eli Roth is best known for his gruesome horror films, affectionately and derisively described as “torture porn,” like “Hostel,” “Cabin Fever,” and most recently “The Green Inferno.” But with his last film, the sexual home invasion thriller “Knock Knock,” Roth has moved away from horror into other genre realms. Case in point: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roth is attached to direct the remake of Michael Winner’s 1974 vigilante action film “Death Wish.” Bruce Willis is currently attached to star as the film’s protagonist.
In a recent interview with IndieWIRE’s Graham Winfrey, Roth says that he likes “originality and…when you take a classic thing and put your own twist on it. You watch a movie like ‘The Witch’ and it’s such a great, fantastic take on the classic New England witch fairy tale, and you say ‘Yeah that’s the type of movie that should be out there,...

"Big Bad Wolves" directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado have dropped out of the upcoming remake of the 1974 Charles Bronson revenge classic "Death Wish" currently in the works at MGM and Paramount.
The pair have left over a matter of creative differences. According to Deadline, they wanted to make over the film with their signature stylized action and sense of humor along with doing a spiritually closer adaptation of the original Brian Garfield novel rather than a direct remake of the previous Michael Winner-directed film.
That upset the studio which had a script that star Bruce Willis signed off on, a start of production date and a projected release date all set. Their departure is said to be more amicable than when Carnahan dropped out of directing.
Roger Birnbaum is producing the film which boasts a script by Joe Carnahan, Dan Gilroy and Graham Yost.

You may recall the news that MGM and Paramount had tapped Bruce Willis to lead a Death Wish remake, even drafting in Big Bad Wolves directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado.
Alas, plans to overhaul the cult action franchise have hit a fairly significant speed bump today, with Deadline revealing that both Keshales and Papushado are no longer attached to direct. Citing the de facto “creative differences,” the filmmakers follow Joe Carnahan – who provided the first draft with the intention of helming – and Gerardo Naranjo out the exit door.
Sources close to the project claim that MGM had nailed down release plans that didn’t afford Keshales and Papushado much time to transition a Death Wish remake from page to screen, and though it remains to be seen how much their departure will affect the Willis-fronted actioner, Deadline notes that the final decision between MGM and the co-directors was a mutual one.

Looks like Big Bad Wolves directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado have exited Death Wish, the MGM and Paramount remake of the 1974 hit that Bruce Willis will star in, reprising the reluctant vigilante made famous by Charles Bronson.
The film is based on the 1972 novel of the same name. The story follows an architect whose life is ruined after his wife his killed and his daughter is sexually assaulted. When the cops come up short, the man takes justice into his own hands by hunting down the suspects himself.
So why did Keshales and Papushado leave the project? Well its simple...“creative differences”.

MGM and Paramount just can't seem to crack the Death Wish remake they've been working on for years. The Grey director Joe Carnahan wrote the script and was all set to direct it, but he bailed on the project when the studio insisted that Bruce Willis be cast in the lead. Carnahan didn't like the casting choice, so he walked, and the studio eventually hired the guys who directed the 2013 cult hit Big Bad Wolves to take over. Now Deadline reports that those guys (Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado) have left the movie as well, leaving the project without a director once again.
Graham Yost (Justified) and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) have both rewritten Carnahan's original script, but it's unclear exactly what the problem is with getting this movie off the ground. The subject matter certainly isn't easy — for those who don't know, the first movie followed a guy who turns...

While Bruce Willis may be hard at work producing the upcoming prequel/sequel to Die Hard, it looks like he has yet another action film coming his way. According to Deadline, MGM and Paramount are teaming up to make Death Wish, a film based on the 1972 novel of the same name. As mentioned earlier, Willis will be the star of the picture, and the relatively unknown duo Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado are looking to sign on as directors. Word has it that production for the film will begin this summer, but that's by no means a confirmation.
The story follows an architect whose life is ruined after his wife his killed and his daughter is sexually assaulted. When the cops come up short, the man takes justice into his own hands by hunting down the suspects himself.

Paramount and MGM have found the perfect action hero to step into the Death Wish shoes that were vacated by the sad passing of Charles Bronson in 2003. That’s because the studios’ reboot of the beloved franchise will now be led by none-other than Bruce Willis. And I for one can’t think of anyone more perfect for the role. Now, it might be a good idea to take this with a pinch of salt, as a proposed revival of the revenge flick has been bouncing around for years now. Alas, he skipped out, and passed the torch onto Gerardo Naranjo (Miss Bala), who is now being replaced by Big Bad Wolves directors Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado. There’s no word on whether early drafts by Graham Yost (TV’s Justified) or Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) are still in play, but we’ll likely find out soon.
