For his latest documentary multi-dn alum and BRAVÒ founder Ivan Olita casts his sights on the identity of Jesse Garon, the first Elvis impersonator ever bestowed the honour of conducting weddings in Las Vegas. Garon, who is named after Elvis’ twin brother, recently came to a point in life where he began reflecting on his identity, both as an impersonator but also as an individual reckoning with his sexuality. Olita conveys Garon’s story across a series of mesmerising shots that highlight his life against the backdrop of a less familiar Las Vegas, one more mysterious and old-school in its reality. It’s an eye-opening, reflective and humanist documentary about a person who has been defining their life through the constructed image of an icon. With A King recently arriving online, Dn caught up with Olita for a chat about his filmmaking methodology, the challenge of portraying authenticity, and the...

Modern reality TV can charitably be called a mixed bag. The overwhelming majority of reality TV programmes have roughly the same intellectual value of a monkey riding a tricycle but are moderately entertaining rubbish that will briefly distract you from life. But there are also a worryingly large number of reality TV programmes (My Super Sweet 16 and Geordie Shore for example) that make you lose faith in not only reality TV as a genre but television itself as a medium.
The programmes we’ll be looking at today don’t fit into those two categories. They’re worse…

This one is at the bottom of the list because, although it’s full of people who are clearly emotionally damaged, the show itself is not actively harming anybody featured in it and is simply documenting their lunacy.

Years later, Gladys would suffer a miscarriage, making her all the more protective of her only surviving child.
"My mama never let me out of her sight," said Elvis.
Vernon told biographer, Peter Guralnick (Last Train to Memphis): "He never spent a night away from home until he was seventeen. The three of us formed our own private world."

Widely regarded as the most influential singer of all time, selling over 1,300,000,000 albums worldwide, Elvis Presley, idolized by fans and musicians alike, is indeed the undisputed King of Rock and Roll. Elvis Aron Presley was born on January 8th, 1935 in a two-room shotgun house in Tupelo, Mississippi. He had a twin brother, Jesse Garon, who died at birth. Though at grade school, Elvis’ teachers considered him a “well-mannered and quiet child,” the boy’s tight relationship with his mother caused him grief with schoolmates, as they quickly dubbed him a “stuttering mama’s boy.” Elvis’ father, Vernon, held a...
