There was exciting news for Canadian and Indigenous genre fans yesterday as Deadline was the first to announce the cast of Kaniehtiio Horn's directorial debut, Seeds. Seeds follows Ziggy (Horn), who is offered her first gig as an online influencer, promoting Nature’s Oath, a seed and fertilizer company. When her cousin summons her back to the rez, she is forced into a battle to save her people’s legacy, finding her power along the way. Horn has taken the lead in their own film, along with writing, directing and executive producing it. They have added legendary Indigenous actor Graham Greene, character actor Patrick Garrow, Reservation Dogs' Dallas Goldtooth, Meegwun Fairbrother (Burden of Truth) and Dylan Cook (Letterkenny). They are joined by two more Indigenous actors...

Jack Reacher is the hero we deserve, a massive hulk of a man whose incredible physicality matches his sharp wit and intellect. He's the perfect dude, capable of taking down armies with nothing but his bare hands while outwitting the most cunning of villains.
I've read almost all of Lee Child's sprawling book series featuring Reacher. Each comes jam-packed with intricate plots, violent criminals, and beautiful women. Think James Bond with more violence and fewer jokes.
Reacher's journey to the screen kicked off with the brilliant Tom Cruise vehicle "Jack Reacher," but has since found new life in the form of Amazon's "Reacher," starring Alan Ritchson in the title role. The series, adapted from Child's first novel, "The Killing Floor," is a dream come true and perfectly captures the character's nature without compromise. That includes a flurry of fight sequences that pit our muscle-packing hero against swarms of enemies,...

There seems to be endless low budget horror with titles like the one above (and I have watched many!). ‘The Curse of…’ or ‘The Haunting of…’ and it’s always 50/50 on the quality so I generally go in with low expectations.
I will say right off the bat that The Curse of Buckout Road exceeded those expectations. Buckout Road is ‘the most haunted road in America’ and the movie covers some of the myths, legends, ghosts and folklore that apparently haunt the road. There’s plenty on show and I’m sure plenty more if they were needed for a sequel. A group of young people start to think that these myths might...

The fifth and final season of Syfy’s Killjoys will see the show close things out on its own irreverent terms.
Killjoys, as its fans certainly know by now, is coming to a close with the upcoming fifth season. The space-set Syfy series, which launched back on June 19, 2015, has enjoyed four seasons on the NBCU-owned cable channel in the U.S. and Space channel in Canada. However, by the conclusion of Season 4, it was already revealed that Season 5 would be the final chapter of galactic saga of bounty hunters Yalena “Dutch” Yardeen (Hannah John-Kamen), Johnny Andras Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore) and D’avin Jaqobis (Luke Macfarlane).

Before he swung into the Spider-Man suit, Tom Holland found some time to lead an independent drama alongside Joel Kinnaman. Edge of Winter, the directorial debut from Rob Connolly, follows the two as father and son as they venture into the woods on a day trip that turns dangerous. Ahead of a release later this summer, the first trailer has arrived today.
Hopefully a strong acting showcase for the lead actors, the trailer sells an intense dynamic between our main ensemble. Also starring Percy Hynes White, Rachelle Lefevre, Shiloh Fernandez, Rossif Sutherland, Patrick Garrow, and Shaun Benson, check out the trailer below, following the synopsis.
Recently divorced and laid off from his job, Elliot Baker (Joel Kinnaman, Suicide Squad; Run All Night) is desperate to spend more time bonding with his sons, Bradley (Tom Holland, Captain America: Civil War) and Caleb (Percy Hynes White, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb...

It’s more fitting than frustrating that Slasher, horror network Chiller’s first foray into original scripted programming, unspools as an unabashed amalgam of horror movie tropes. After all, the NBCUniversal-owned channel has carved out a funky little niche for itself broadcasting “scary good” films and TV series, from classics like Kolchak: The Night Stalker to little gems like Harper’s Island, not so much curating its content as airing it all as a bloody buffet for horror hounds.
That approach has kept the lights on up until now, encouraging Chiller to think bigger with original features like Animal and (excellent) SXSW entry The Boy. And so, despite the creative energies of director Craig David Wallace (Todd and the Book of Pure Evil) and writer-creator Aaron Martin (DeGrassi: The Next Generation), it makes sense that Slasher is also guided by the techniques and...

‘RoboCop’ 2014 movie: Full-fledged flop at domestic box office (photo: Joel Kinnaman in ‘RoboCop’ 2014) Directed by José Padilha, and starring Joel Kinnaman and Abbie Cornish, Sony Pictures’ $100 million-budgeted RoboCop 2014 remake opened with disappointing numbers on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Things improved a bit over the weekend, but there’s no denying that RoboCop 2014 will become a major domestic box office bomb. (See also: José Padilha hates ‘RoboCop’ 2014 filmmaking process.) According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, Padilha’s remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 "classic" (as mentioned elsewhere on this site, just about anything made before 2003 is considered a classic these days) landed in third place this extended Presidents Day Weekend, February 14-17, trailing both Warner Bros.’ overwhelmingly well-received The Lego Movie and Sony Pictures / ScreenGems’ low-budget romantic comedy About Last Night. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street), and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt,...

Any movie that tries a lot harder than it needs to is all right in my book. And that’s exactly the case with RoboCop, an impressive reboot of the Paul Verhoeven classic that, much to my delight, fires on all cylinders, blending furious action, strong acting and an inventive script to create a film that uses familiar parts to build something sleek, smart and entirely capable of going toe-to-toe with Verhoeven’s original.
I’m well aware that fans of the original RoboCop will balk at that praise, call it unsubstantiated and probably even berate me for entirely missing the point, but hear me out. What Verhoeven’s film did fantastically was address the political hot topics and concerns of its time (declining industry, privatization, etc.) by playing them out in a futuristic, but believable, setting. And while José Padilha’s PG-13 remake arrives without the original’s enticing ultraviolence,...

We delve into the RoboCop remake to provide a spoiler-filled look at how it compares to the original, and what it gets right...
Nb: this article contains spoilers.
The problem with most modern movie remakes, perhaps, is that they're a compromise where commerce frequently trounces art. With brand-aware studios keen to revive old names and properties for the sake of profit, it becomes the job of a new generation of filmmakers to rework an existing idea for a contemporary and often suspicious audience.
When it came to bringing back RoboCop, the level of internet cynicism was understandable: how could you possibly equal - let alone improve on - one of the most respected genre films of the 1980s?
Director Jose Padilha's RoboCop remake doesn't have the unfettered, angry edge of his Brazilian Elite Squad movies, but that's understandable given that he's made a $130m...
