Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has just landed a big sci-fi film package it is setting a global theatrical release for in Mercy, starring Chris Pratt, directed by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Oscar-nominated producer Charles Roven. I understand the deal closed in the past week with a spring start of production planned.
The project puts Pratt back in business with Amazon, which acquired his Skydance movie The Tomorrow War from Paramount and turned into a big Prime Video hit during the pandemic. He also has the series The Terminal List on Prime. The movie also reps a reunion for Pratt and Bekmambetov, who both worked on the latter’s 2008 Hollywood directorial debut Wanted, a $342 million-grossing, Oscar-nominated blockbuster based on Mark Millar’s comic book.
Written by Marco van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy is set in the near future when capital crime has increased. The pic follows a detective (Pratt) who...

For years, director John Woo has been developing a remake of his awesome 1989 film The Killer (buy it Here). At one point, Lupita Nyong’o was signed on to play the assassin role that had been played by Chow Yun-Fat in the original film. That version of the project fell apart when Nyong’o had to step away due to scheduling issues – but Woo just dusted himself off and kept working on the remake. Last summer, it was announced that Lupin‘s Omar Sy had signed on to star in the film, and now Deadline reports that Sy is being joined in the cast by Nathalie Emmanuel of Game of Thrones and the Fast and Furious franchise.
Details on the roles Sy and Emmanuel will be playing in the remake of The Killer have not been revealed.

Atlas Entertainment, which scored a box office hit this year with Sony Pictures’ “Uncharted,” has taken legal action to block a crypto firm from marketing a new coin tied to the movie based on the hit PlayStation video game.
Atlas Entertainment insiders were shocked last month to see online references to an “Uncharted” coin with PR materials that referenced Atlas Entertainment, used the company’s logo and even referencing Atlas’ historic movie credits such as “The Dark Knight” and “Wonder Woman.”
Last week, Atlas Entertainment attorney Bert Deixler, of Kendall, Brill & Kelly, sent a cease and desist letter to Net Savings Link and Silverbear Capital, two entities cited in the PR materials that alerted Atlas to the unauthorized use of its moniker. Net Savings Link issued a press release on April 6 announcing the launch of the Uncharted token, which asserted that “Uncharted is backed by Atlas Digital Entertainment, a subsidiary of Atlas Entertainment.

The strong debut of Sony Pictures’ “Uncharted” at the box office last month came a happy sign that moviegoing is back to normal-ish levels as families returned to multiplexes for the Tom Holland-starrer based on the PlayStation video game franchise.
Behind the scenes, “Uncharted” is also a textbook case of a movie that needed seasoned and dedicated producers to see it through a nearly 13-year journey to get made. The leader of that pack was Charles Roven, the head of Atlas Entertainment, who has been in the business of making blockbusters for a long time. Think “The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Suicide Squad,” “Man of Steel,” “Wonder Woman” and more.
Roven discusses “Uncharted’s” course to the big screen — including his collaboration with producer Avi Arad — on the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business.” He also weighs in on the debate over what defines filmmaking in the streaming age.

After spending more than a decade in development and rotating through multiple directors, Sony’s “Uncharted” movie, based on the popular PlayStation video-game series, is finally set to hit the big screen on Feb. 18, much to the delight of gamers everywhere. For the film’s crew, the challenge was to keep key aspects of the movie true to its source, which has sold more than 40 million copies, making it one of the most popular titles for Sony’s PlayStation console.
Envisioned as playable “Indiana Jones” adventures, the game revolves around Nathan Drake, a bold treasure hunter obsessed with finding ancient prizes and firing off hilarious one-liners. In the film adaptation, Drake is aged down and played by “Spider-Man” star Tom Holland, opposite Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali and Tati Gabrielle, in an original tale about his early, action-packed days.

The release date for “Uncharted,” Sony’s film adaptation of the popular video game series starring Tom Holland, has been delayed yet again.
This time, the movie is being pushed back one week to Feb. 18, 2022, after being previously set for Feb. 11, 2022.
The road to “Uncharted” hitting the big screen has been long and full of delays. Its earlier release dates included March 5, 2021; Oct. 8, 2021 and July 16, 2021. Prior to those dates, it was slated for 2016 and 2017. However, a revolving door of directors, including the likes of David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg and Travis Knight, and the Covid-19 pandemic have prevented the movie from sticking to a release date.
Now, Ruben Fleischer is helming the film, which follows the adventures of young treasure hunter Nathan Drake (Holland). The movie is based on the popular PlayStation video game franchise of the same name, which sees Drake travel the...

The gravity-abused life of iconic stuntman Evel Knievel (1938-2007) was set to be chronicled by USA Network, which last year ordered a limited series, titled Evel, with Milo Ventimiglia tapped to star as the iconic daredevil. However, the world has obviously experienced significant changes since those plans were first spun, and it seems that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused Evel to wipe out from the cable channel’s production slate.
USA Network has scrapped Evel, according to THR. The project, which was picked up to series in September 2019, saw its New Mexico production—which was finishing location prep and was on the verge of rolling cameras—shut down this past March as the pandemic escalated. That move saw Ventimiglia and the rest of the cast—Sarah Gadon, David Krumholtz and Michael Chernus—sent home. Now, four months after that event, it seems that—rather than delaying production—the network has...

USA Network is pumping the brakes on its Evel Knievel limited series. Milo Ventimiglia was set to portray the famed daredevil in a new drama — appropriately titled Evel — but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the production is no longer moving forward.
Production on the drama, which was reportedly set to chronicle Knievel’s infamous 1974 Snake River Canyon jump, was halted on March 13 as part of the industry-wide coronavirus shutdown. Now, due to scheduling conflicts with Ventimiglia and writer Etan Frankel, USA is parting ways with the project.

USA Network will not be going forward with Evel, its high-profile limited series starring This Is Us‘ Milo Ventimiglia as the larger-than-life ’70s daredevil Evel Knievel.
The limited series was to film during Ventimiglia’s hiatus from This Is Us. The project was fully cast and staffed; production was about to begin when it was forced to shut down on the last day of prep, March 13, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
With Ventimiglia’s window of availability closing, no definitive path to production restart in the U.S. amid a surge of new Covid-19 infections, which makes synching up everyone’s schedules a daunting proposition, a decision was made not to proceed with the series at USA.
Ucp, the studio behind the project, will be shopping it with Ventimiglia, who had been on board since Day 1, still attached. The rest of the cast has been released.

The Evel Knievel limited drama series starring Milo Ventimiglia is no longer moving forward at USA Network.
The decision to scrap the production at its original home was brought on by the production shutdown amid the pandemic. Production was about to begin when it was halted on its last day of prep on March 13, a person with knowledge of the situation tells TheWrap.
The studio behind the project, Universal Content Productions (Ucp), is shopping the project elsewhere in the hopes that it can still be made.

Sony Pictures has put production of Uncharted on hold for six weeks as concerns over the spread of Covid-19 continue to grow. Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg are starring in the film adaptation (which was in the pre-production stage) based on the bestselling PlayStation action-adventure video game created by Naughty Dog. Sony could be back to the drawing board with “Uncharted,” the studio’s long-in-development adaptation of the popular video game.

Sony had no comment.
The studio still intends to push forward with the film and set a new release date as they look for a fresh director. Both Holland and Wahlberg will remain attached.

The gravity-abused life of iconic stuntman Evel Knievel (1938-2007) will be chronicled by USA Network, which has ordered a limited series, titled Evel.
Milo Ventimiglia, who currently stars on NBC television drama This is Us (which manifests under the same corporate umbrella as the cable channel), will play the eponymous daredevil on USA Network’s Evel, which he’ll also executive produce. The series will focus on a specific period in Knievel’s career, namely the preparatory build-up before his famously-failed jump across Snake River Canyon – a heavily hyped event that took place west of Idaho’s Shoshone Falls, on September 8, 1974, at 3:36 p.m. Mdt.
The limited series comes after a 2015 spate of contemplated-but-nixed Evel Knievel biographical projects from heavies like Martin Scorsese and Darren Aronofsky.

Dan Trachtenberg has exited the director’s chair for Sony’s “Uncharted” movie starring Tom Holland, with the studio taking meetings with top filmmakers and production starting early next year.
The studio confirmed Trachtenberg’s departure Thursday. It also said Sony-based PlayStation Productions — headed by Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan — had come on to produce alongside Chuck Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner and Ari Arad.
The screenplay is written by the team of Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Rafe Judkins. The video game series was created by developer Naughty Dog and published by PlayStation. It has sold over 41 million copies to date.
The “Uncharted” games follow Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who journeys across the world to uncover various historical mysteries. The series began with “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,” released on the PlayStation 3 in 2007.
The announcement about “Uncharted” comes two days after Sony Pictures went public over its divorce with Disney on future “Spider-Man” projects.

Tom Holland’s video game adaptation “Uncharted” has lost “10 Cloverfield Lane” director Dan Trachtenberg, multiple individuals with knowledge of the project tell TheWrap.
Trachtenberg replaced Shawn Levy, who departed due to scheduling conflicts. Sony Pictures is still moving forward with the project and expects to name a replacement soon. In addition to the “Cloverfield” spinoff film, “10 Cloverfield Lane,” Trachtenberg’s credits include “Black Mirror: Playtest” and the pilot of “The Boys” for Amazon.
Holland stars in the action-adventure film based on the PlayStation video game series about the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake. Mark Wahlberg was at one point attached to play the swashbuckling, Indiana Jones-type hero, but Sony opted for a younger take on the character. The latest draft of the script was written by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker. Joe Carnahan wrote the original draft.
