When the nominations for the 21st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were announced in 1994, one outcome was immediately made certain. There was no way that Susan Lucci of “All My Children” could lose … Because for the first time in 13 years, she wasn’t in the running for Best Actress for her role as Erica Kane.

The snub caught everyone in the industry by surprise, especially since Lucci was considered to have had a remarkable year on the show.
Those selected in lieu of Lucci in 1994 included her “All My Children” co-star Julia Barr as Brooke English, the Daytime Emmys’ reigning Best Actress Linda Dano as Felicia Gallant on “Another World,” Fiona Hutchison as Jenna Bradshaw on “Guiding Light,” Hillary B. To say that the 80's were the heyday of soap operas would be an understatement. There were no shows that captivated as many people as soap operas did, and to this day it's hard to replicate that success. General Hospital, however, has always been a step above any other show, thanks to the success of Luke and Laura's wedding.
From breaking the record of 30 million viewers to receiving gifts from Princess Diana herself, no couple has ever had so much attention focused on them. As controversial as the whole story was, it's hard to argue with the fact that so many people fell in love with their twisted romance.
The question is, where are the actors who brought these characters to our screens, today?

General Hospital fans knew it was coming, but that doesn’t make it sting any less.
When Nicholas Alexander Chavez debuted as Spencer Cassadine, he was an immediate hit with the fan base. Couple that with pairing him with Trina, and magic was made.
Sprina fans were devastated when Spencer “died” after a fall off a boat with Esme (Avery Pohl). Initially, it was set to be a leave of absence while he filmed a Ryan Murphy project, but now it’s an official exit.
Speculation about whether Nicholas was out ran for at least a month, but he hadn’t spoken out until now.
The actor took to X (formerly Twitter) to put out his confirmation that his time on General Hospital had come to an end.

In the 1950s daytime programming became extremely popular, with game shows and soap operas becoming a staple in American households. Although the Emmy Awards had been established in 1949, the categories were limited for the first few years, and performers from all genres, and from both daytime and nighttime programs, were lumped together in one or two acting categories, with daytime performers usually left out.

In 1993, a new face showed up in Port Charles and ABC‘s General Hospital would never be the same. Mobster Sonny Corinthos, played by Maurice Benard, proved to be no ordinary member of the mob, forging deep relationships and becoming engulfed in storylines that ranged from the loss of a loved one to paralysis and memory loss. So it’s no surprise that both Sonny and Benard quickly became fan favorites. The key to Sonny’s longevity has been making him a layered, real character, and a lot of the credit goes to Benard. The now-veteran daytime star has even brought his own life into the show by both talking about his own bipolar disorder and giving the same diagnosis to Sonny. On the eve of General Hospital‘s 60th anniversary on April 1, Benard reflected on his iconic character, talking about everything from how Anthony Geary (Luke Spencer) got him...

It’s nearly impossible to think of ABC‘s daytime drama General Hospital without thinking of Genie Francis. The Emmy winner joined the soap in 1977 as a teenager and by 1981, when her character married Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary), she was a household name. Now, that ingenue is in the past and Laura Spencer is a formidable presence in Port Charles — in addition to being the city’s mayor, she’s also embroiled in the storyline surrounding her grandson, Spencer (Nicholas Chavez), and his desire to gain custody of his infant baby brother, born to his ex-girlfriend Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl). Ahead of General Hospital celebrating 60 years on the air on April 1, our Jim Halterman caught up with Francis to discuss her daytime television journey and why she thinks the drama will endure for years to come. What do you make of General Hospital in 2023, given your history with the show and where things are heading?...

“General Hospital,” the longest running scripted show currently in production, turns 60 on April 1, and to commemorate that momentous occasion, Variety gathered five of its iconic stars together. Here, Genie Francis, Maurice Benard, Kin Shriner, Kristina Wagner and Tristan Rogers discuss the ABC’s soap opera’s loyal fandom, and reminisce about its heyday, when supercouple Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Francis) — creations of then-executive producer Gloria Monty — lifted the show into the pop culture stratosphere.
“General Hospital,” one of only four remaining daytime dramas, keeps breaking its own Emmys records — having won Outstanding Daytime Drama 15 times. Frank Valentini, its executive producer and showrunner since 2012, says incorporating the show’s legacy characters with new cast members is key to its longevity. “We’re not focusing on the history,” he says. “We’re moving forward with the history.” It helps that viewers see the cast as family: “For a large part of the audience,...

One of the reasons ABC‘s General Hospital has stayed at the forefront of daytime television is its ability to produce the best super couples through the years. And as we approach the drama’s 60th anniversary on April 1, we’re looking back at some of those beloved TV twosomes. Leading the historical pack, of course, is Luke and Laura (Anthony Geary and Genie Francis) and close behind them are couples like Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) and Holly Sutton (Emma Samms). Special mention goes to Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), who has been a part of multiple super couples, first with Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil), and presently with both girlfriend Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) and ex-wife Carly Spencer (Laura Wright), in one of daytime’s hottest love triangles. But the real ones to watch these days are a pair dubbed “Sprina” — Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Chavez) and Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali). The...

Genie Francis is no longer defending her controversial scene from “General Hospital”.
The actress was one half of the show’s supercouple of Luke and Laura, who are beloved by fans, but their story started out in a horrible way.
In a 1979 episode, Anthony Geary’s Luke raped Laura, though the scene was later interpreted as a seduction. The couple’s eventual wedding would become one of the biggest events in television in 1981.

Long-time General Hospital star Genie Francis has opened up about the show’s controversial date rape scene from 1979 and how it’s been a “burden” she is tired of having to justify. Francis, who has played Laura Spencer in the daytime soap since 1977, spoke about the uncomfortable scene during ABC‘s Television Critics Association presentation on Wednesday, January 11, stating, “I don’t defend it anymore.” The horrific scene caused controversy, not just because of its inappropriateness but because of how Francis’ character, Laura, later fell in love with the man who raped her, Luke (Anthony Geary), and eventually married him. “You know, as a young kid, at 17, I was told to play rape, and I played it,” Francis said (via People). “I didn’t even know what it was. If there’s one defining moment in American soap operas, it’s Luke and Laura’s wedding on “General Hospital.” The nuptials of the super-couple (played by Anthony Geary and Genie Francis) was a major television event when it aired in November 1981, bringing in 30 million viewers to the ABC series and making the duo one of the most iconic couples in soap history.
But as famous and beloved as the couple is, their relationship started on an extremely ugly note. In an October 1979 episode, Luke raped her, and although the show initially played it as such, the event was later looked back on as a “seduction” due to the popularity of the pairing. Although the characters remained together for years, with their love story a major part of the series until Geary left the cast in 2015, the assault cast a large shadow over the rest of their storylines. With three Daytime Emmys for Best Actor, Peter Bergman (“The Young and the Restless”) is one of only five men to win that award that many times or more. But you could actually consider him overdue for a fourth trophy given the sheer number of times he’s been nominated. In 2022 he earned his 23rd nomination, which is by far the most any actor has received in the category. But so far his win rate is just 14. Compare that to Anthony Geary, who was batting .500 (eight wins out of 16 noms) by the time he retired from “General Hospital.” Is it finally time for Bergman to add another trophy to his mantel?

Early this year, “General Hospital” killed off Luke Spencer, the iconic character who was played by Anthony Geary on and off for decades. Luke’s current wife Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) turned up at the door of his ex-wife Laura (Genie Francis) — whose coupledom with Luke sent “General Hospital” to its stratospheric heights in the early 1980s — to tell her the tragic news. Luke had been killed, under mysterious circumstances, of course, in a cable-car accident in Austria.
On Friday, the show memorialized Luke, with his old friends gathering to celebrate him on the Haunted Star.
Frank Valentini, the executive producer of “General Hospital,” isn’t doing interviews about why he decided to kill off Luke now, especially since Geary, who is 74, hasn’t been on the show since a guest appearance in 2017. General Hospital said goodbye to one of its most iconic characters on Monday’s episode as it was revealed that Anthony Geary‘s Luke Spencer had died off-screen. The revelation came from Luke’s most recent wife, Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliott). She told the lovable rogue’s ex-wife and soulmate Laura (Genie Francis) that Luke had died in a cable car accident in Austria. However, later in the episode, it was strongly suggested that the death was no accident and that Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) had a hand in it. Geary debuted as charming con artist Luke Spencer in 1978 and left the long-running daytime soap opera in 2015. He briefly returned in 2017 in a storyline that saw Tracy exit the show as a series regular. While other characters have referenced Luke since then, he has remained an off-screen character. Over the years, Geary had grown tired of playing the same character.

Luke Spencer has left Port Charles for good.
On Monday’s episode of ABC’s long-running soap opera “General Hospital,” the character that was played by Anthony Geary was pronounced dead. Since Geary himself left the show in 2015, the soap brought back Tracy Quartermaine (played by Jane Elliott) to deliver the news — to Luke’s on/off longtime love, Laura (Genie Francis).
“Tracy, it’s past midnight. What’s going on?” Laura asked the Quartermain heiress.
“It’s Luke,” she responded. “He’s … He’s gone.”
During the show, Tracy revealed that Luke died in a cable car accident.
Geary, who originated the role in the 1970s, holds the record for most Daytime Emmy Awards for Lead Actor in a Drama Series — with eight wins on 17 nominations. His pairing with Francis’ Laura became an epic soap saga — with their 1981 televised wedding drawing a record 30 million viewers.

Remembering Luke & Laura’s Record-Breaking, Controversial ‘General Hospital’ Wedding, 40 Years Later
Luke Spencer and Laura Webber of General Hospital hold a complicated place in the world of daytime drama. Case in point: They’re the first duo mentioned in Wikipedia’s “supercouple” article, but they’re also mentioned first in the “forced seduction” entry. Content warning: This article covers topics of sexual assault. That’s because the story of Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis)—who married on screen 40 years ago, on November 16, 1981—started with sexual assault. As the Associated Press later recapped, Luke raped Laura in a 1979 episode, forcing himself on her late at night at a closed disco. According to Abigail De Kosnik, author of The Survival of Soap Opera, the rape storyline was a last-ditch effort to save General Hospital from cancellation. “Gloria Monty, [then] the executive producer of General Hospital, essentially was told she had two weeks to save the show and ABC was going to cancel...

“Sonny’s energy is dark and dreadful, but he’s a cool-ass character,” declares Maurice Benard about the role he’s played on ABC’s “General Hospital” since 1993. Playing mob boss Sonny Corinthos on the long-running soap has earned the actor nine Daytime Emmy nominations, and wins as Best Actor in 2003, 2019 and now 2021. This makes Benard one of only five actors in Daytime Emmy history to win three or more times in the lead-actor category. Watch our exclusive video interview with Benard above.

Maurice Benard earned his eighth Best Actor nomination at the Daytime Emmys this year for his role as Sonny Corinthos on “General Hospital.” That ties him with Eric Braeden (“The Young and the Restless”) and Larry Bryggman (“As the World Turns”) as the third most nominated actor in the history of the category. If we’re right he would join another exclusive club as one of the few soap stars who have won the category three or more times.

The Daytime Emmys aren’t shy about giving out multiple awards — just ask eight-time Best Actor winner Anthony Geary (“General Hospital“) or six-time Best Actress champ Erika Slezak (“One Life to Live”). But Best Supporting Actress has been an anomaly: no one has ever won it more than twice, and for a long time even that was rare. However, this year Tamara Braun (“Days of Our Lives”) could break from the pack by becoming the first ever to win this category three times.
To date only five actresses have won this award twice: Julia Barr (both for “All My Children”), Nancy Lee Grahn, Amelia Heinle (both for “The Young and the Restless”), Gina Tognoni (both for “Guiding Light”), and Braun, who prevailed for the first time for “Days” in 2009 and then won for “Gh” just last year.

“General Hospital” star Genie Francis got an early birthday present this year: on May 24 she was announced as one of the five nominees for Best Actress at the 2021 Daytime Emmy Awards, two days ahead of the veteran actress’s 59th birthday. Will this be her year?
