This week’s So You Think You Can Dance practically deserved its own post on Craigslist.
You were the All-Star wearing beige who kept gesticulating wildly with your arms… I was the Team Stage dancer trying to keep my head above water in a complicated routine… You were Medusa, and how the heck am I supposed to make that work?
Yes, I’m exaggerating a wee bit, and no, I am not Michael Slezak. (More on that in a moment.) But the gulf that existed between some of this season’s Top 8 and their All-Star partners was considerable as the week’s routines unfolded,...

One may be the loneliest number, but three is quickly becoming the most irksome — at least when it comes to Season 12 of So You Think You Can Dance.
PhotosSytycd Turns 10: Check Out Our Photo Album of All Its Past Champs!
Which is my roundabout way of saying I really, really, really miss the one-on-one routines that were the backbone of the show’s first 11 seasons, and — perhaps even more importantly — can’t figure out why Nigel Lythgoe couldn’t figure out a way this week to cram nine of ’em into a two-hour telecast.

I’m not gonna lie to you: I went into tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance Top 6 performance episode with my mind made up.
Rudy and Tanisha got robbed last week. Valerie had no business being in the Top 6. For justice to prevail, the Season 11 crown could only end up in one spot: Atop Ricky’s artistically dazzling head.

And then, just like that, a rowdy, randy wedding dance, a mind-bending Rorschach test and a brief blast of a favorite 1980 hit made me rethink everything — and I...

That bit of Michael Jackson lyrical gobbledygook is a fitting intro to my recap of tonight’s So You Think You Can Dance Top 8 telecast — seeing how the end-of-episode results made absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Hold up now. Valerie and Jacque are two of Season 11’s final three women? The most adorable TV character since Teletubbies‘ Po got rejected by America? Jenna Dewan-Tatum loved errrrything — no “v,” no second “e,” no discretion whatsoever?
Color me crestfallen — with a side-order of anticipation that maybe next week, there’ll be a perfect storm of choreography, music, costuming and partnering...

If last week’s introduction of the Season 10 All-Stars added a little snap, crackle and pop to the So You Think You Can Dance Tuesday-night cereal bowl — come now, let’s all admit flakes and milk are not just for breakfast anymore! — then tonight’s decision to let the show’s alumni choreograph all eight competitive routines was like an additional dollop of blackberries, strawberries and wheat germ.
Let’s be clear: More important than the nostalgia factor of old pals Allison Holker, Mark Kanemura and Courtney Galiano (among others) bringing their energy and grace to the stage was...

Spoiler ahead. Two more dancers have left the competition after the Tuesday, Aug. 13, performance show, which featured the season 10 finalists paired up with 10 of the most beloved So You Think You Can Dance All-Stars (like sparklin’ Brandon Bryant, pictured). I’ll post my full recap of tonight’s performances later on; in the meantime, discuss!
Nico Greetham and Makenzie Dustman have been eliminated.
Tucker Knox and Jenna Johnson also landed in the bottom four but were saved by the votes of a group of 15 judges/choreographers (I believe this is the first time we’ve heard this number acknowledged,...

Two more dancers have left the competition after tonight’s performance show, which featured guest judge Kenny Ortega, some incredible duets, and plenty of side-eye from me re: the elimination process. Malece Miller and Alan Bersten have been eliminated. What? Nigel Lythgoe attempted to soften this blow (?!) by suggesting that they try (try!!) to join the Top 10 tour anyway, as swing dancers or alternates. As If He Isn’T In Charge Of All Of This.

Mary Murphy is blogging for EW.com this season! Catch up with her and her thoughts on the most recent episodes of So You Think You Can Dance.
What an exciting night of dance! Tension ran high on the judging panel and in the audience as to who would make our finale. The pressure is off the judges because America voted for the top six tonight, and for who would be in the finale. We had absolutely no say, so I found it odd today that my Twitter was so abuzz with comments about how “we” could possibly let a certain dancer leave the show!

We're just a week away from the big So You Think You Can Dance performance finale, so things are really getting tense now! Maybe that's why our top six - Witney, Chehon, Tiffany, Cyrus, Eliana and Cole - open the show with a dark, twisted Sonya Tayeh routine set to Kelis's 'Scream'. Either way, it's a brilliant way to begin! We'll be losing two dancers at the end of the show, and the votes have already been cast, but before all that we've got a whole bunch of performances to look forward to. And here to help Nigel and Mary on the judging side, we've got the lovely Christina Applegate again! Let's get this started... Tiffany - dancing with all-star Benji Schwimmer (Jive) Jean-Marc Généreux is here to choreograph Tiffany and Benji's jive, and explains that it's set in a diner - there's a guy (a great (more)...

Silent screams pierced the So You Think You Can Dance stage this week, and it had nothing to do with Mary Murphy’s voice giving out during a Hot Tamale Train boarding call, or young female dancers responding to lascivious feedback from Nigel Lythgoe.
Au contraire, Mia Michaels and Tyce Diorio separately concocted routines that respectively found Eliana and Cole miming howls of rage and aggression, and Chehon and his All-Star partner Kathryn releasing their agony into the wind. In both instances, the unintentional homages to Edvard Munch proved deeply moving, so much so, in fact, that I worry the...

Kristin Chenoweth is guest judging! We totally love her. She's on "Glee" sometimes and she's got that sweet-as-syrup Southern accent and she's just adorable. She joins Lil' C, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe to preside over the top 16 as they dance their way through the next round of competition.
Cat Deeley is channeling Daisy Buchanan, but whatever. We're so happy about Chenoweth we can't summon the energy to snark at Cat. We're just fired up and ready to sit here on the couch with some cookies and wine and watch some world class body moving.
There will be dancing and, oh yes, there will be kissing. Let's break it down, couple-by-couple:
Sasha and Alexander
What can we say? A beautiful routine that was kind of cheesed out by the addition of a prop piano and a gimmicky finish. Sasha and Alexander are both, as Kristin Chenoweth points out, beautiful dancers.

Adam Rose/Fox Cat Deeley hosts “So You Think You Can Dance.”
Overall tonight, the judges talked a lot about Improvement. Probably because that was the rationale for keeping Ryan. They also talk a lot about the choreography. And emotional portrayal of character. Although the show is not supposed to be So We Think You Have Potential, or So You Think You Can Choreograph, or So You Think You Can Emote. There were four judges tonight instead of just three,...

It’s the top 20 again—all of them, since nobody went home last week!
We welcome them in pairs.
Almost every girl decides to do a midair split in the opening. We get it. You’re all very limber.
Cat, pretty in yellow, says she’s been dreaming of keeping all 20 ever since the show started, but warns us that four people will be cut tomorrow. Judges are Nigel Lythgoe,...

Well, almost! Really hoping that whatever happened to Lauren that required her to see a medic at the end of last night's show is not serious. I'm beginning to feel like I'm jinxing people! Whoever I end up favoring as a possible winner gets hurt... Anyway, onto last night's show. First Kent danced a cha cha with Anya in a Jean Marc Genereux and France routine. I thought this was very good for someone who isn't trained in that style. I didn't think it was anywhere near perfect. It looked way too jazzy, which is how contemporary dancers often look dancing Latin to me. Too loose-kneed, too fluid, and not enough sharpness, not quite enough hip action. I agree with guest judge Toni Redpath who said it was better and more grounded than he's been before. He was definitely better...

So You Think You Can Dance continued tonight as the Top 6 contestants took to the stage once again with their all-star partners in hopes of becoming 'America's Favorite Dancer'. They were joined on this double elimination week by special guest judge and champion ballroom dancer Toni Reopath. Here's what the judges said: Kent and Anya - Cha Cha (Choreographers: Jean-Marc Genereux & France) Nigel: Says he has grown from a boy to a man with this performance but advises him to watch his hands while dancing. Toni: Thinks it was better than his past cha cha performance but that he sacrificed his posture in an effort to seem "manly". Mia: Praises him for moving his hips in the ways that the genre demands, but admits that it didn't flow as well as she would have hoped. She advises him to learn to "be a chameleon" and to take her previous (more...

So You Think You Can Dance continued tonight as the Top 8 dancers took to the stage with their all-star partners in hopes of becoming 'America's Favorite Dancer'. Here's what the judges said: Lauren and Pasha - Cha Cha (choreographer: Jean-Marc Genereux) Nigel: Thinks that she has taken the judges' advice on "maturing" her dancing and that she is a different girl than she was last week. He congratulates her on the performance. Mia: Says she was "so hot" and agrees with Nigel that she danced like a woman. Adam: Calls it "sharp, specific and strong" and says that she smouldered. "You've totally discovered yourself, I'm so proud," he adds.
Juan and Lauren - Contemporary (choreographer: Mandy Moore) Nigel: Says he was amazed by him for "pushing beyond barriers" and praises his naive personality (more)...

To mark tonight's season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance, we asked season 4 fan favorite Stephen "tWitch" Boss -- he and partner Katee Shean performed Mia Michaels' Emmy-nominated routine to "Mercy" (a.k.a. "The Door Dance") -- to pick his favorite Sytycd performances of all time. His list, "in no particular order," follows. 15. Ade and Melissa, "This Woman’s Work" (season 5) Choreographed by Tyce Diorio "I’m definitely in tears writing about this one. There was power, trust, hope, understanding, compassion, sincerity, anger, fear, and all of the other underlying things that come along when you or someone you know goes through this experience . Everyone who felt the power of this piece was connected on what the meaning of unconditional love really is and should be. Through it all, love stands, and no matter what, no matter how messed-up or not to our liking the situation may be,...

Newly coupled dancers, Karla Garcia and Vitolio Jeune, have to swallow bitter pills of elimination when the judges of "So You Think You Can Dance" decided that it was time for them to go. Karla and Vitolio were in the bottom three along with the couples Kayla Radomski-Kupono Aweau and Jeanine Mason-Phillip Chbeeb.
During the solo effort to get a second chance, Karla danced to 'Blackbird' by Dionne Farris but Head Judge Nigel Lythgoe said the Jazz/Contemporary dancer did not ooze the star quality that they thought she possessed at the beginning. Meanwhile, Vitolio did a routine to "Here Comes Goodbye" by Rascal Flatts. Nigel said the Contemporary dancer offered nothing but his presence.

“So You Think You Can Dance” is the best reality competition show ever. Sure, I’m touted as MTV News’ “American Idol” expert, and sure, I get paid to do “Idol in 60 Seconds” recaps every season, but deep down inside, I just wanna “Dance.”
I’m not going to rehash the reasons why I think “Sytycd” is a superior show to “AI” — especially since my old colleague Lindsey Thomas did it perfectly last summer. Instead, I’m here to beg all of you to start watching and make this season the highest rated yet. I have no stock in the show. Hell, it’s on a rival network. I just think the world will be a better place if, instead of gossiping about Miley and Jason’s breakup, we discussed the finer points of Napoleon and Tabitha’s latest lyrical hip-hop routine.
