Fantasy Island entered the pop culture consciousness as two made-for-tv movies and returned as a popular ABC series airing from 1977 to 1984. It lasted long enough in the memory to earn three Fantasy Island reboots. However, none garnered the same acclaim as the original show starring Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize. Sure, the remakes speak to Hollywood’s neverending desire to mine profitable IP, but they also prove Fantasy Island still has value despite its principal cast members’ deaths years ago.

Tom Felton didn’t quite cast a spell on Anthony Hopkins during an audition for the 2012 film “Hitchcock.”
The biopic, helmed by Sacha Gervasi, starred Hopkins as auteur Alfred Hitchcock alongside Helen Mirren as his wife, Alma Reville. The film centered on the events surrounding the making of “Psycho,” with Scarlett Johansson, Toni Collette, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jessica Biel, and Danny Huston also starring.
“Harry Potter” alum Felton auditioned for an undisclosed role and remembered his botched improv opposite screen legend Hopkins. “This was not my finest hour when it came to auditioning,” Felton said during the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “I got the sides very last minute. I knew I wasn’t right for the role.”
Felton explained, “I’ve never seen ‘Psycho’ — the film was about the making of ‘Psycho’ — I didn’t know anything particularly well, but I knew I wasn’t right for this.”

The world re-premiere of the rock documentary “Anvil! The Story of Anvil,” which took place at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills on Thursday night, began when the movie started to play with the houselights still on. Then lights went off, except for a huge monitor just off the stage that continued to shine in the face of the audience. Then, after about a minute, the film lurched to a halt when the screen froze completely.
As a way to kick off a celebration of a film about an influential but only marginally successful heavy metal band that in some ways resembles a real-life Spinal Tap, it was perfect.
And “Anvil!” director Sacha Gervasi said as much when he came onstage after the snafu-filled opening. “As usual with Anvil,” he said, “there was a massive f—up!”
Then again, massive f—ups – and more importantly, the perseverance to get through...

Last Thursday, a stone’s throw from the former headquarters of Larry Flynt’s Hustler empire, a trove of thirsty teenage influencers, A-listers such as Dustin Hoffman and rock stars including Muse’s Matt Bellamy were queueing up to walk the red carpet at a movie premiere.
This wasn’t, however, the latest Marvel launch or an Oscar-bait opening. It was the re-release of a 13-year-old music documentary about a previously relatively unknown heavy metal band from Canada.
Anvil!: The Story of Anvil, a tale of hope and heavy metal, has been having quite the encore.
The film, directed by Sacha Gervasi, has been re-released by Utopia for a new generation of kids that seem willing to get in the pit for its heartwarming message: never give up.

This outstanding, amusing music film originally premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival but it took a while for any distributor to buy it and release it - only later in 2009 did it eventually open (we wrote about it!). Now it's opening in theaters again in 2022, with a special event in LA featuring a live performance from Anvil! in September. Since 1978, the Canadian heavy metal band Anvil has be known as one of hard rock's most influential yet commercially unsuccessful acts. Way back in 2006, after a fledging European tour, Anvil sets out to record their thirteenth album and continue to follow their dreams. And filmmaker Sacha Gervasi was there to capture it all. The re-release is timed to the film's 13th...

Playing the main character in a biopic is a tall order for any actor, but taking on the role of influential musician Boy George in the forthcoming film “Karma Chameleon” seems even more of a challenge considering his multi-faceted life as a cultural icon, fashion trailblazer and the sound of the 1980s.
As of this week, the lead has yet to be cast for the film, which is still in pre-production with writer-director Sacha Gervasi (“Hitchcock”); Millennium Films is backing the project. Still, speculation has been running rampant since Boy George, who turns 60 this year, revealed that the movie was in the works on April 20, and announced the production is looking for “a brave young actor from anywhere in the globe” to play him.

British filmmaker Sacha Gervasi knows his hard rock and metal and where to find the drama within those stories, so perhaps, it’s little surprise he’s teaming up with Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson to co-write a screenplay telling the remarkable story of the concert Dickinson played at the height of The Siege of Sarajevo in 1994. Risking their lives, Dickinson and his band Skunkworks—Dickson quit Iron Maiden in 93 for several years to pursue solo projects— were smuggled into the besieged city by the U.N.

Exclusive: Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson is teaming up with filmmaker Sacha Gervasi (Anvil: The Story of Anvil!) to co-write a narrative screenplay about the now-cult rock concert Dickinson played during the height of the Siege of Sarajevo in 1994.
Risking their lives, Dickinson and his band Skunkworks were smuggled into the besieged city by the Un to play a concert for its beleaguered citizens amidst the chaos of war. The journey was captured in a 2016 documentary Scream for Me Sarajevo.
The Siege Of Sarajevo was the longest siege in modern history lasting 1,425 days and resulting in more than 11,000 killed, including 1,600 children. The city was decimated, infrastructure destroyed, and there was wide spread damage to many cultural institutions, government buildings, hospitals, and schools.
In 2019, the Sarajevo City Council granted Dickinson the title of “Honorary citizen of Sarajevo,” in remembrance of his visit and the band’s performance at the peak of the Bosnian war.

Queen sold out stadiums, but Michael Jackson was the King of Pop for a Pepsi generation.
Michael Jackson's legacy as a music legend is complicated by the rumors and stories surrounding his life. His father managed the Jackson Five with a firm hand. He was thrust into stardom at an extremely young age and moonwalked into the stratosphere of performers. Now Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King will navigate the complexities of the King of Pop in an upcoming biographical feature film, according to Variety.
The screenplay will be written by John Logan, who wrote Gladiator, Hugo, the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. Exclusive: For those concerned that the 4-hour CBS Studios miniseries based on James Comey’s book A Higher Loyalty might be a glowing portrait of the ex-FBI Director fired by Donald Trump: the series will include the embarrassing incident where FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page — who were reportedly engaged in an extramarital affair — exchanged texts when Strzok was spearheading the Russia probe that reportedly disparaged Trump and favored Hillary Clinton during the presidential elections. It was a major embarrassment to the bureau Comey oversaw.
Rescue Me‘s Steven Pasquale has just been set to play Strzok and Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) to play Page. They join Jeff Daniels (Comey), Brendan Gleeson (Trump), Holly Hunter (Acting Attorney General Sally Yates), Michael Kelly (Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe), Jennifer Ehle (Patrice Comey), and Peter Coyote (Robert Mueller).

A biopic about legendary pop siblings The Bee Gees is being spearheaded by Paramount Pictures.
The Bee Gees are set for an outbreak of their signature brand of night fever at theaters, with the story of the iconic Aussie sibling pop act set to join the recent genre surge of music biopics in the aftermath of Rami Malek's acclaimed performance as Queen's Freddie Mercury in the hit movie, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Indeed, a yet-to-be-titled biopic project centered on the 220 million-record-selling trio, The Bee Gees, will be brought about by a producer trifecta spearheaded by Paramount Pictures, reports Deadline. Paramount acquired the rights to dramatize the story from the Gibb family estate, chronicling the travails of siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb from their beginnings as a rock act, career nadirs and, ultimately, their reinvention as disco kings, culminating with their culturally-ubiquitous smash hits from the soundtrack of 1977 film Saturday Night Fever.

At one time this was one of Emmy’s most sought after and prestigious prizes, but as the Limited Series format became more attractive, and a magnet for top talent, the TV Movie category is just a shell of what it used to be. The numbers say it all. Only one of the five nominees received more than two nominations overall, and three of the nominees find their only Emmy mention right here—not a great indication of widespread support for this form in the Academy, to say the least. Netflix has actually won here a couple of times by plucking episodes from their popular anthology series, Black Mirror, and labeling them ‘movies’. A new rule instituted this year requires an entry to run at least 75 minutes long, which would have disqualified two of the past three winners here.

As a journalist, there are certain interviews that are a capital E, experience, and make an indelible impact on you long after they’re done. Such was the case for a young, pre-filmmaking Sacha Gervasi with renowned diminutive actor Hervé Villechaize of “The Man with the Golden Gun” and “Fantasy Island” fame who conducted an epic, days-long interview with a very candid Villechaize in the later years of his life.

“My Dinner with Herve” “originated from a real story,” reveals Sacha Gervasi. In the summer of 1993 the young journalist was sent to Los Angeles to write “a whole host of very important celebrity interviews, the least important of which was an interview with a now-faded French actor called Herve Villechaize.” But the inconsequential chat turned into a five-day discourse during which the star poured his heart out, only to die by suicide shortly thereafter. Twenty-five years later Gervasi wrote and directed the Emmy-nominated film starring Peter Dinklage as Villechaize and Jamie Dornan as a character based on Gervasi. Watch our exclusive video interview with the filmmaker above.

The pendulum swings in the Emmys limited-series and television-movie categories, which were merged for three years beginning in 2011 because there weren’t enough limited series to fill out their own category. These days, though, there are more limited series than TV movies competing for Emmys, and the heat is all on the side of the multi-part dramas that tend to attract top-drawer talent both in front of and behind the cameras.
It wouldn’t be surprising to find no more than one or two TV-movie actors nominated in the four acting categories in which limited series and movie performances go head-to-head. And you can expect to find lots of Academy Award winners and big movie stars competing for Emmys in these categories, because potential nominees include Sam Rockwell, Patricia Arquette, Mahershala Ali, Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins, Amy Adams, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michelle Williams and Benicio Del Toro.

The classic rock biopic craze continues with MGM, which is producing a film based on Culture Club frontman Boy George.
Boy George, one of the most recognizable faces from the 1980s, is the next music icon to get swept up in the film industry’s classic rock biopic wave. Indeed, in the spirit of the Oscars-dominating Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, and the buzz-generating Elton John biopic, Rocketman (which hits theaters this weekend), the ostentatiously gender-bending frontman of Culture Club is getting a big screen portrayal of his own from a major studio.
The Boy George biopic, currently untitled, is in the works at MGM, which will produce the film, reports Deadline. The studio has already found its creative fulcrum in Sacha Gervasi, who will serve as director and writer, joined by producers Kevin King Templeton (Creed) and Paul Kemsley, as well as executive producers George and Jessica de Rothschild.

Eighth Grade
Stars: Elsie Fisher, Josh Hamilton, Emily Robinson, Jake Ryan, Daniel Zolghadri, Fred Hechinger, Imani Lewis, Luke Prael, Catherine Oliviere | Written and Directed by Bo Burnham
Eighth Grade is the directorial debut of comedian and online sensation Bo Burnham. In his first foray behind the camera, he chooses a rather strange and unique subject with thirteen-year-old Kayla Day, played by the fantastic Elsie Fisher, and her awkward journey from middle school to the nightmarish and anxiety of high school.
First things first, I can’t praise the lead performance from Elsie Fisher enough. The intuition and layers showcased in such a raw and emotional arc is profound. Way beyond her years, yet perfectly balanced in beautifully effective melancholy of an era everyone went through but would most undoubtedly want to forget. Fisher is the heart and embodiment of the picture. Without her performance, Eighth Grade falls into predictable entertainment territory.

According to multiple sources, including Deadline, Sacha Gervasi has been set to write the English-language remake of Rugna's Terrified (Rugna also wrote the screenplay of his original movie) for Fox Searchlight, where del Toro has a deal to develop horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films.
An acclaimed filmmaker in his own right, Gervasi directed the award-winning documentary 2008's Anvil: The Story of Anvil, 2012's Hitchcock (which explored the life of Alfred Hitchcock during the making of Psycho), and 2017's November Criminals.
