Over 20 years after Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon first debuted “The Barry Gibb Talk Show” on Saturday Night Live, the duo revived the sketch on the latest episode.
The premise remains unchanged after two decades and a handful of sketches: Fallon and Timberlake’s Barry and Robin Gibb welcome politicians and experts onto their show, despite the Bee Gees brothers having little understanding of politics. Instead of a thought-provoking conversation on the subject, Barry instead berates the guests, while he and his brother sporadically break into song.

In helping to construct the narrative for the recent Bee Gees documentary on HBO, editors Derek Boonstra and Robert Martinez had a huge hurdle to overcome with both Maurice Gibb and Robin Gibb having passed away. “There’s a previously made Bee Gees documentary called, ‘In Our Own Time.’ We really leaned on those interviews pretty, pretty heavily,” Martinez tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video above). This proved to be very useful in answering several questions they had as the filmmaking process went on. “We have different questions we want answered than maybe when they were alive, so some of the stuff that they hadn’t used, those interviews were just new ground for us to cover.”
“The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” which available to stream on HBO Max, chronicles the history of the band comprised of three brothers: Barry Gibb along with Maurice and Robin.

When Mark Monroe, the writer of the recent Bee Gees documentary, first started hearing the band when “Saturday Night Fever” came out, he resorted to questionable methods to try and hear some of their earlier music. “I remember I had an older brother who had some Bee Gees albums and I remember trying to pilfer them in the night and listen to them,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video above). But in helping to put this documentary together, Monroe found a lot of areas about the band that he wasn’t as familiar with. “I was not so familiar with the story of their many careers. They have several highs and they kind of transform themselves a couple of times and I was not as familiar with that.”

Among the things that caught Frank Marshall off guard when he started making a documentary about The Bee Gees was the incredible sense of humor that the brothers had not only with each other, but almost all the time. “You don’t see that in the band on the stage, but when they’re off stage and they’re back there cracking jokes, they’re playing games on each other,” Marshall tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above). Marshall traces this to the incredibly strong bond that the brothers developed from performing together at such a young age. “They had this dream when they were nine, ten years old, that they wanted to be a band and they had the perseverance and the drive that they had and their parents supported them.”

In the past month, Kurt Cobain and Nirvana have snuck back into the headlines. April 5th marked the 27th anniversary of Cobain’s death, an Nft of Cobain’s last photo shoot was put on the market, and Nirvana as a group were hit with a copyright-infringement lawsuit for alleged unauthorized use of a 1949 illustration on their merch. As announced this week, six strands of Cobain’s hair, cut in 1989, will be part of a rock-memorabilia auction.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm in December of 2020, in a Bonus Review of “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” now on HBO Max.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
The Brothers Gibb, Aka The Bee Gees, are a group of three sibling singer/songwriters – Barry, Maurice and Robin – who began their journey as recording artists in the 1960s Beatles era, and after a slight decline, came roaring back in the 1970s with a new sound and a new beat. The “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack, on which the Bee Gees are prominently featured, has sold an astounding 20 million albums and sealed the band’s legacy. Their popularity also paved the way for youngest brother Andy, and their fame featured the usual highs and tragedies.

“Stayin’ Alive” is the Bee Gees’ most recognizable song, and arguably one of the most well-known dance tracks ever created.
The song was the first track off the hugely successful soundtrack to “Saturday Night Fever” and as used in the film provides the backdrop for one of the defining cinematic moments of the 1970s. It enjoyed 4 weeks at the top of the billboard charts and is widely credited for firmly cementing disco as mainstream phenomenon and the Bee Gees themselves as 1970s dance music icons.
And weirdly enough, that almost didn’t happen — “Stayin’ Alive” wasn’t originally written to be a dance club tune.
The song’s complicated history is explained in HBO’s new documentary “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” a biography of the legendary pop group.

The Bee Gees created music for nearly five decades, but their legacy is often reduced to a brief period in the late Seventies when they became the most famous disco band on the planet thanks to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

Before the Bee Gees spread disco fever across radio waves, dance floors and movie screens, they were somewhat less known for their exquisite pop ballads. And they had a different lead singer: Robin Gibb, who died at the age of 62 on May 20, 2012. Unlike big brother Barry Gibb’s smooth, seductive falsetto – which propelled Seventies strobe-light classics like “Stayin’ Alive,” “Jive Talkin’,” and “Night Fever” — Robin’s lead vocals were warbly, yet soulful, elevating woeful anthems of sinking ships, collapsing caves and lovers strolling to the electric chair. Morrissey fans, recognize!

Exclusive: HBO Documentary Films has acquired North American rights to The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. The feature documentary, which was an official selection of the 2020 Telluride Film Festival before it was scratched by the pandemic, tells the story of an iconic band that is way more than a symbol of the polyester disco era from when their soundtrack fueled Saturday Night Fever. That was just one part of their evolution as musicians, and Frank Marshall has directed an intimate look at siblings Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb. They wrote more than 1,000 songs, including twenty number one hits throughout their career. The film will premiere on HBO later this year and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Paramount purchased the life rights to the Gibb estate on behalf of “Bohemian Rhapsody” producer Graham King and his Gk Films. In an ode to also-rans everywhere, Chance the Rapper spent this week’s Saturday Night Live monologue extolling the virtues of the second-best things, people and places in life.
The exuberant song was spurred by the fact that it was his second time hosting the late-night sketch show (and the first pulling double-duty as both host and musical guest). “To honor my hometown, I’m going to do a song about Chicago, the Second City,” he announced at the top of the show. What followed was a tune that paid homage to Pepsi, Adam Carolla, Redbox and Bing, as well...

Yesterday is a movie full of existential questions: What if the Beatles never happened? What if nobody knew their songs? Would people still fall in love without “Eight Days a Week” to show them how? Would people feel sorry for themselves without “For No One” or “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” or “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”? And what if we heard their songs now for the first time? And, most importantly: What if some charmless guitar-slinging douchebag just happened to show up one day with 100 or...
