By now, we've all come to accept Arnold Schwarzenegger in pretty much any acting role he feels like filling. We've seen him follow a complete arc from action hero to comedy star to real-life politician, and at this point, it's become normal that he once played Danny Devito's brother and a male scientist that impregnated himself. In 1996's "Jingle All The Way," director Brian Levant showed us Schwarzenegger as just an ordinary family man, shortly after James Cameron portrayed him as a secret agent that defrauds his family into believing he's an average guy. He might not always be very believable in any of these roles, but he's far more convincing than he has any right to be.
In 2022, we've gotten used to these performances, and we can look back with nostalgia, numb to the absurdity of them all. But back in 1990, the idea of casting Schwarzenegger as the...

From an early age, animator Don Bluth was a great admirer of Disney and has said in interviews that as a child, he would practice drawing by copying old Disney comic books. This childhood activity led to him being hired by Disney to work on their feature film version of "Sleeping Beauty" in the mid-1950s. After a stint doing missionary work and animating for various TV shows, Bluth returned to Disney in the mid-'70s to work on the company's version of "Robin Hood." Bluth worked on various animated features for Disney, eventually rising to the role of animation director for the 1977 film "Pete's Dragon." Over the course of working for Disney, however, Bluth became kind of disillusioned with the way the company owned all of their animators' work, and how animators were all trained to draw and animate the same way. Bluth left Disney in 1979 to form his own production company.

There aren't very many major American animated features that weren't made by Disney, and some of the best were created by animation master Don Bluth. Bluth was a Disney animator who left the company citing "creative differences," and he went on to create classics like "The Secret of Nimh," "An American Tale," and "The Land Before Time." In 1994, Bluth teamed with 20th Century Fox and longtime collaborator Gary Goldman to create Fox Animation Studios. Their first feature was "Anastasia," a historical adventure story about Anastasia Romanov, the daughter of the last Russian Tsar and possibly the only survivor of the mass assassination of her family. The film earned two Academy Award nominations -- for the original song "Journey to the Past" and the movie's score -- and is remembered by many '90s kids for being a weird and wonderful alternative to the movies from the House of Mouse.

"Predator" from 1987 is one of the most enduringly scary monster movies of all time. Decades later, 20th Century Studios (formerly Fox) is still cranking out sequels and even made a good one with "Prey" in 2022, but when you break down what went on behind the scenes of the original Arnold Schwarzenegger action-horror classic, it's easy to see how close this film was to being an embarrassment for everyone involved.
Shot on location in a hot-house Mexican jungle, the cast and crew were already battling the elements. They also embarked on this hunter-and-hunted suspense story the same way as the characters — without a glimpse of the Predator. Legendary "Die Hard" director John McTiernan shot a huge portion of this creature feature before he even had his monster on set, and when it arrived, the crew had to get to the chopper for a redesign.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

When they’re not gazing at the cosmos or pondering extraterrestrial intelligence, astronauts watch movies, too. During a recent 20th Century Fox panel on the studio lot promoting the new film “Ad Astra” and Nasa’s involvement in creating its near-future verisimilitude, four Nasa experts talked about their favorite films that take us into the unknown.
To start things off, panel moderator and “Ad Astra” director James Gray said, “I’d like to ask a nerd question if I could. What science-fiction movies inspired you?” In awe of the true-to-science realism of films such as “Gravity” and “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which essentially predicted the iPad, Gray said, regarding the believability of his own movie before a judging audience, “I’m going to face the guillotine.”

Disney has locked up a win in the copyright lawsuit brought against the company over its hit film “Zootopia.” At least for now. Studio hits back at lawsuit from Total Recall writer Gary Goldman.
Disney was accused in a lawsuit filed yesterday (22 March) of stealing the idea for Zootopia from veteran screenwriter Gary Goldman.
The Total Recall writer said he pitched a version of the project to Disney in 2000 and 2009, but it was rejected by the studio.
The complaint, filed by Esplanade productions, Inc. read: “[Goldman] provided a treatment, a synopsis, character descriptions, character illustrations and other materials. He even provided a title for the franchise: Zootopia.
“Instead of lawfully acquiring Goldman’s work, Defendants said they were not interested in producing it and sent him on his way. Thereafter, consistent with their culture of unauthorized copying, Defendants copied Goldman’s work. They copied Goldman’s themes, settings, plot, characters, and dialogue - some virtually verbatim.”
It alleges copyright infringement, breach of implied-in-fact contract, breach of confidence and unfair competition.

Disney is facing a brand-new lawsuit that isn't exactly magical. Hollywood screenwriter and producer Gary Goldman is claiming in court documents that he originally pitched the idea for Zootopia twice over the years to the Disney company. The suit by Gary's Esplanade Production Inc. alleges copyright infringement, breach of implied-in-fact contact, breach of confidence and unfair competition. According to court documents obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Gary and his legal team cite various reasons as to why Disney's Zootopia is "substantially similar" to Gary's Zootopia. "The Disney Zootopia copies substantial elements of that cartoon world, calls it...

“Zootopia” is a ripoff. At least that’s the claim of a new lawsuit accusing The Walt Disney Company of copyright infringement over the animated offering. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in California, writer Gary Goldman’s Esplanade Productions, Inc. says that Goldman pitched his idea for a “Zootopia” franchise twice, only to be rejected. The suit takes pains to accuse Disney of developing a culture of idea-copying. Also Read: 'Zootopia' Creators on How Their 'Weirdly Timely' Story Trumped Real-World Events “Although The Walt Disney Company rigorously enforces its copyrights, it has developed a culture that not only accepts the unauthorized copying.

If you spent more time than was healthy for you in arcades in the '80s then you remember Dragon’s Lair. The game was created by legendary animation director Don Bluth and was totally unique for its time. If you’ve ever thought that Dragon’s Lair would have made a fantastic animated feature, you’re not alone, and now the people behind the original game are trying to make that movie happen. These days, if you want to make a passion project happen there’s really only one place to do it, Kickstarter. Bluth and the original, producer, long-time Bluth collaborator Gary Goldman, have come together to try and make a feature film a reality. However, since animated movies can be quite expensive, the team is actually proposing a two-step process. The $550,000 they are currently asking for is not to create the film ...

The proverbial Top Ten List. A sacred tradition passed down by our cinematic elders. This is the fourth time I have partaken in this holy tradition, and one thing has remained constant is that this list is never set in stone. As we catch up with more films we missed or rewatch our favorites it causes us to like a movie more or less causing this list to change. In fact in 2012 and 2013 I ended up seeing my number one film of the year after I wrote up my Top 10. So the question becomes, “Why Do it?”. Well, for one it’s fun. At least I find it an enjoyable exercise as I try to break down the year that was. I watched 163 movies that were released in 2014. Narrowing that 163 down to a Top 10 is a challenge I enjoy.
Looking at 2014 as a whole it is evident it was a pretty good year.

We take a look back at the geek movies that have hinted at sequels that were never made, and we'd really like to see...
Nb: The following contains inevitable spoilers. If you haven't seen a film in a particular entry, feel free to skip to the next one.
In some cases, it comes as a relief when a threatened sequel fails to materialise. The end of the infamous Mac And Me, for example, sees its family of cretinous aliens drive off in a pink Cadillac, a speech bubble chillingly telling us, "We'll be back!" Thankfully, Mac And Me 2 has yet to materialise, despite the original film's near-legendary status.
Every so often, though, we'll come across a movie that strongly hints at more adventures to come, but for a variety of reasons - usually financial ones - the sequel never got made. To illustrate this,...

Total Recall
Directed by Paul Verhoeven
Written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon and Gary Goldman
1990, USA
Based on a Philip K. Dick short story (We Can Remember It for You Wholesale), Total Recall is set in a futuristic society, where “it has become scientifically possible to implant fake memories into a person’s mind, while erasing their previous identity, thus creating a fictitious persona in such that the subject believes he or she is someone else.” The filmmakers took great liberty with the original story, but, luckily Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett (respected writers of some of the greatest science fiction films), whipped up one of the best produced Hollywood screenplays of the 1990′s.
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Quaid, a 21st-century construction worker in 2084 who discovers that his entire memory of the past derives from a memory chip implanted in his brain. In seeking out the truth, he...

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s face swelling to the point of explosion, midget prostitutes firing semi-automatic rifles and, of course, a 3-breasted mutant woman on Mars. These are amongst the many carnal delights housed within Paul Verhoeven’s seminal 1990 sci-fi action-adventure classic ‘Total Recall’. Set in a future time where other planets in our solar system have been colonised this film tells the story, or perhaps dreams the story, of Douglas Quaid’s adventure on Mars.
Quaid, played by Schwarzenegger, is a working class miner from Earth who has longed all of his life to go to Mars. Unable to afford the expensive cost for flights he sees an advert for a company called ‘Recall’ who can provide people with the memories of certain experiences. So, as you do, Quaid decides to have the experience of being a super agent on Mars prosthetically implanted in his brain. As the procedure starts things...

Total Recall: Ultimate Rekall Edition
Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Ronny Cox | Written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, Jon Povill, Gary Goldman | Directed by Paul Verhoeven
Total Recall is arguably a film that sits firmly in the domain of cinematic nostalgia and has definite cult status. People look at the remake that is currently being publicised and as usual some look forward to it and some complain that it’s a remake that is just not needed. I think my view is that it’s a remake that needs to be done right. The original, while good, is a flawed throwback to eighties schlock sci-fi classics but got lost in translation of constant re-writes and ever changing directors; Strangely though it still holds up and for its time is quite an ambitious tale.

Total Recall
Directed by Paul Verhoeven
Written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon and Gary Goldman
USA, 1990
Thanks to some of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th century, we’ve come to discover that the moon is, in fact, not full of cheese. But thanks to Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 sci-fi action adventure movie, Total Recall, it seems that Mars certainly is. With a frenetic torrent of over-the-top set pieces and humorously delivered one-liners, the film is a campy exploitation that, like a fine lump of English Farmhouse Cheddar, becomes progressively endearing with age.
Set in the not-too-distant future, Doug Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a 21st century construction worker. Seemingly living a perfect life with a perfect wife (Sharon Stone), Doug’s insatiable fascination with Mars leads him to elicit the spurious services of Rekall, a company that implants memories into its paying customers (the exact opposite of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...

I am often surprised at the loyalty people display towards the 1990 "Total Recall." It is a film with some great ideas embedded in it, many of which were either lifted from the Philip K. Dick short story, and some of which were created by Gary Goldman and Paul Verhoeven during the film's lengthy development process. It is also a film that is bogged down by the baggage of its star, and there is no one on Earth who is ever going to convince me that Arnold Schwarzenegger was the right guy to play that part. And as much as I...

Titan Books provided the City of Films with a copy of David Hughes’ book “Tales From Development Hell: The Greatest Movies Never Made?”
Once in a great while I will come across a book that I can’t put down and end up finishing it over the course of hours or days, often forgetting to eat or sleep in the process. Luckily for me such a book recently took over my weekend and I’m here to share a review.
I don’t read a lot of fiction, just keeping to reference and guide books for the most part. My favorites of course are about films and filmmaking; Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, and more recently Scorsese by Ebert are great examples. I’m happy to say Tales From Development Hell fits nicely into my criteria to be entertained and educated at the same time.

Brad Pitt was on the Daily Show With Jon Stewart last night talking about his movie Moneyball, which landed him two Oscar nominations: for best picture as a producer and best actor for playing the lead, Billy Beane. The conversation turned to Oscar campaigning when the host suggested, “Why don’t they go negative on other movies? The Oscar race is always ‘For Your Consideration — Moneyball. “But why not like, ‘The Artist — Go F–k Yourself!’ Why not go negative on this guy?” Pitt played along. “I thought about it,” he said before employing a Gop primary race analogy. “Clooney took Iowa, New Hampshire. Jean took South Carolina. Florida will probably go to Oldman. I’m gonna be hanging out with Ron Paul, so I gotta get in there and mix it up a bit I think.” In the best actor category, Pitt faces Jean Dujardin (The Artist), George Clooney...

We take a look back at the Nic Cage sci-fi thriller Next, a deeply flawed film with a few decent ideas at its core...
Of all the various adaptations of Philip K Dick novels and short stories churned out by Hollywood since the author's death in 1982, Lee Tamahori's Next is surely the loosest. Based on the novelette, The Golden Man, first published in 1954, Next excises the original story's post-apocalyptic setting, mutants and gold-skinned protagonist, in favour of a more straightforward sci-fi thriller vehicle for actor, Nicolas Cage.
The one element that Next retains from The Golden Man is its hero's name (Cris) and his ability to look into the near future. In Next, Cris is a louche, lank-haired Las Vegas magician who performs under the stage name Frank Cadillac. When he's not lounging around smoking and drinking cocktails, he uses his precognitive abilities in his performances, in which he...

Sony Pictures has offered Kate Beckinsale the role of Lori in their remake of Total Recall which already has Colin Farrell and Bryan Cranston attached to star. This is the first news we’ve heard of Beckinsale possibly being attached to the film, but it comes as no surprise seeing that she’s married to Len Wiseman, the film’s director. The two have worked together in two of the Underworld films.
Earlier reports have said Diane Kruger, Jessica Biel and Kate Bosworth each read for the part of Lori. If Beckinsale decides to take the role of Lori, she will be playing opposite Farrell, who would be her husband in the film.
