A cacophony from the people scurrying through the capital's streets seeps through the walls as I sit in the basement at Close-Up Film Center—a small cinema and film library in Shoreditch—with Darragh Amelia. She is one half of the duo at the helm of Ajabu Ajabu, the Tanzania-based collective of arts professionals pushing for visibility and increased access for the country's experimental film scene. Co-founder Jesse Gerard Mpango later described this cinematic landscape during a video interview as mutable, stating, “though some practitioners are creating experimental works, the majority of filmmakers in Tanzania do not view experimentation as an approach in and of itself, but rather experiment out of necessity.” Through screenings and workshops, Ajabu Ajabu aims to unite these works that...

A film that I've been really wanting to see, but it hasn't reached my city, although, it really hasn't screened much at all in the USA, with very little film festival exposure globally. I'm sure I'll get my hands on a screener at some point. In the meantime, here's the trailer for "Children's Republic" ("La république des enfants" or "Republica di Mininus") by Bissau-Guinean filmmaker Flora Gomes, a futuristic tale of a city in an unnamed West African county, after a horrific and tragic civil war that leaves only the children. They organize and form what becomes a stable and...

In its 3rd edition (18-24 March), the Luxor African Film Festival organized a press conference for the American star Danny Glover and the Bissau-Guinean director Flora Gomes as part of their tributes. The conference was moderated by film critic Sherif Awad. After thanking the festival's organizers for their hospitality and the tribute, Glover spoke about his film The Children's Republic which was presented at the opening, revealing that he had a chance to visit some African countries in 2004 only to see the effects of civil war on children in particular and also the presence of about one million mines on the border areas in Africa that caused the fall of many of the victims, and the...

This reads like something wholly original and I'm definitely intrigued. Titled Children's Republic (La république des enfants) by Bissau-Guinean filmmaker Flora Gomes, the synopsis for the film follows: In West Africa, there's a small country every adult abandoned. The children get organized and the Children's Republic becomes a stable and prosperous country. But the children can no longer grow up. Researching, I found very few links which made it difficult to put a comprehensive post on the film together. But I learned that it's a futuristic tale of a city ruled by children, its only inhabitants, after a horrific and tragic civil war. And even more strange,...

This sounds like it could be a really interesting movie. I'm sold on the synopsis alone but I couldn't find much else about it online, like a trailer, or some clips. - You have to admire European film industry folks - they go to bat for their filmmakers. Further proof that European filmmakers do have it good, the Board of Management of the Council of Europe's Eurimages Fund agreed to support 13 feature films with some Euros and among the featured projects and filmmakers we have veterans Istvan Szabo (Being Julia), Nanni Moretti (Quiet Chaos) and Bent Hamer (O'Horten) receiving some coin for their latest. Danis Tanovic, who just preemed his film Triage at Tiff will receive once again multi-territory support for Cirkus Columbia, while A Town Called Panic pair Vincent Patar & Stéphane Aubier team for another animated project. Spanish director Iciar Bollain (see pic) is prepping her film Even the Rain - a biopic on Christopher Columbus with actors Luis Tosar and Belén Rueda. Here is the full list below of films to watch out for in late 2010, 2011 and beyond. Kai
