How Kevin Smith challenged the distribution model for cinema, and what happened next...
Kevin Smith’s career has taken some interesting turns over its three decades and counting. He’s criticised Bruce Willis, parted ways with the Weinsteins, sewn Justin Long into a Walrus suit, given us the spectacle of Johnny Depp with a penis shaped nose, and even picketed his own releases. And he did those last two things twice over. He’s one of the most unpredictable filmmakers working today, he’s made podcasting a filthily brilliant art form and his projects frequently reach fever dream levels of brilliance and bizarre. But possibly the most interesting occurrence in Smith’s career was the furore and fallout, or lack thereof, surrounding his 2011 release Red State.
After the critical mauling Smith received for his studio project Cop Out in 2010, he returned to his indie roots with the...

Director Seth Gordon (Baywatch) has signed on to helm the drama Life in Rewind, a movie based on a book by the same title. It tells the story of a young man with Ocd and his struggles. Deadline describes the plot of the movie:
The movie is in the vein of Good Will Hunting and Silver Linings Playbook. After witnessing his mother’s death at an early age, Ed Zine developed one of the most severe Ocd cases on record, with a fear of death so profound that he refused to leave his basement for three years. He was helped back from the precipice by a maverick doctor from Harvard.
In addition to Baywatch, Gordon has directed “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters,” “Four Christmases,” and “Horrible Bosses.”
There's no casting announcements yet, or word on a release date.

So, Kevin Smith… A man whose work I’ve really enjoyed over the years (Clerks 2 and Dogma being my personal highlights, though I used to live for Mallrats), took a, let’s say, interesting path with his recent directorial efforts Red State and Tusk. Exploring the horror genre rather than the comedy/drama he became known for, Smith looks to have a new-found passion for filmmaking, seemingly no longer going through the motions with his View Askewniverse – though he has just announced another Jay and Silent Bob flick!
Instead Smith announced the development of a “True North” trilogy: strange genre tales set in Canada, a country that – like Smith – I have an affinity for.

The cutting of three veteran Sesame Street cast members was the result of the educational children’s series’ “evolving” curriculum and thus characters, and not any HBO interference, producers said in a statement on Thursday.
RelatedSesame Street on HBO Gets Updated Theme and Other Changes
In the wake of recent reports that Bob McGrath and Emilio Delgado (pictured above) and Roscoe Orman — who played Bob, Luis and Gordon for 45, 45 and 42 years, respectively — had been let go concurrent with the show’s retooling for HBO, Sesame Workshop issued a statement stating that cast changes go hand-in-hand with curriculum and content changes.

They may be “red and white and never blue” and they may “not even supposed to be here today,” but the clerks of Eh-2-Zed are certainly having an abnormal adolescence. Yoga Hosers marks the second film in Kevin Smith’s True North series, an American parody of Canada that may repay the favor for American Venus, Bruce Sweeney’s rare Canadian send-up of American values. This is certainly reading too much into the film, even if Smith takes the joke a little too far. There’s only so many times you can parody the pronunciation of the letter “o” as “eh.”

This article contains mild spoilers for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. We've kept these as vague as possible, but if you haven't seen the film yet, you might wish to skip the entry pertaining to that.
2015 was a particularly exemplary year for all kinds of movies, but particularly in genre and blockbuster cinema. When there's so much to talk about, it's inevitable that some of the really good stuff gets lost in the mix of awards season chatter, but that's especially true when there's still some residual stigma about movies outside of the 'worthy' release schedule that will arrive in UK cinemas between now and the Academy Awards ceremony in February.

Kitty Gordon: Actress in silent movies and on the musical comedy stage. Rediscovering a long-forgotten silent film star: Kitty Gordon It seems almost unthinkable that there are still silent stars who have not been resurrected, their lives and films subject to detailed, if not always reliable, examination. Yet I am reminded by Michael Levenston, a Canadian who has compiled what is best described as a “scrapbook” of her life and career, that there is one such individual – and not just a “name” in silent films, but also from 1901 onwards famed as a singer/actress in musical comedy and on the vaudeville stage in both her native England and the United States. And she is Kitty Gordon (1878-1974). 'The Enchantress' and her $50,000 backside Kitty Gordon was a talented lady, so much so that Victor Herbert wrote the 1911 operetta The Enchantress for her; one who also had a “gimmick,” in that...

Plans for the DC Cinematic Universe at Warner Bros are heating up as the studio turns its attention to new projects and characters to add after "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" kicks off the next five years of interconnected superhero films.
After releasing the first still and cast for Wonder Woman this week, it looks like Warners is ready to expand their roster of female heroes beyond Gal Godot's Diana. It looks like the way they plan to do that is to bring the Black Canary to the screen and use the character as a launching point for a female-centric team-up movie later on.
The Black Canary is a secret identity taken on by two people, according to post-Crisis continuity Dinah Drake and her daughter Dinah Laurel Lance. The latter has the super powered "Canary Cry," a sonic attack and both were really good at hand to hand combat.

Originally pegged to give The Revenant, The Hateful Eight and David O. Russell’s Joy a run for their money this Christmas period, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Oliver Stone’s starry biopic Snowden has been pushed into 2016.
No official reason was cited by studio Open Road Films, though the postponement does mean that the high-profile drama will bow out of this year’s Oscar race. Sources close to the production claim that Stone’s film is yet to be finished, which is likely an understandable consequence birthed from the busy schedules of its leading cast members.
With Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley primed to topline the picture about the government agent, whose name lives in infamy after leaking a staggering amount of classified information to the public, Open Road’s decision to push Snowden likely comes down to the actors’ commitment to other projects. Get ready stateside filmgoers, because the “phoners” (aka “crazies”) are coming to the Us. Stephen King fans know that the master of macabre doesn’t like using cell phones. His 2006 novel, Cell, is a cautionary tale about what can go wrong by pressing portable phones to our ears and keeping them close at hand in our pockets, and its unflinching subject matter contains flocks of murderous lunatics that would be right at home in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, George A. Romero’s The Crazies, or Simon Clark’s Blood Crazy.
We knew this unique King novel was getting the adaptation treatment, with King co-writing the screenplay and John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles, but we’re now one big step closer to seeing it on the silver screen, as Clarius Entertainment has acquired the Us rights to the movie.

Harrison Ford is getting old, and Lucasfilm is still struggling to find ways to keep the Indiana Jones franchise going with or without the actor, but is there a new intrepid explorer already on the scene? Columbia Pictures certainly seems to think it has found one in Nathan Drake, as the studio appears to be moving full steam ahead with an adaptation of Uncharted, the video-game franchise in which that character stars.
A few filmmakers have come aboard and later departed the project, including Silver Linings Playbook director David O. It is not too shabby in what the Northeast (New England) part of the United States has produced in terms of past and present actors/actresses making their show business dreams come true. Film careers can be a lot like ice cubes–they start out solid and cool but if you sit around in stagnation your efforts and hard work can melt away before one’s very eyes. Certainly no one can accuse this talented crop of thespians of being one-hit wonders on the big screen. After all, one does not become a recipient of an Academy Award by just sheer luck and charitable fortune.
As a native Bostonian and life long New Englander, I felt compelled to spotlight those Massachusetts-born and bred actors from the same region that had ultimate success on the big screen in winning the Oscar for their acting achievement and contribution to the motion picture industry.

Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures has announced today that producer Jonathan Gordon, a longtime David O. Russell collaborator and Oscar nominee for "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle," will join the company as President of Production. Gordon, an independent who has presided over production at Universal and at the Weinsteins' Miramax, cut his producer's teeth with Gus Van Sant's 1997 "Good Will Hunting." He has worked closely with a number of top-drawer directors including Russell, James Gray, Kevin Smith and George Clooney on Oscar-nominated productions. Since its inception in 2013, Annapurna has received 17 Academy Award nominations, and founder Ellison became the first woman to have two Best Picture nominations in the same year ("Hustle" and "Her" in 2014). Earlier this month in Cannes, she shook up the Croisette with her rebranded foreign sales arm, and with Best Director winner Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher."...

There, he worked on films such as “Good Will Hunting,” “Dogma” and “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.” “After working closely with Jon on ‘American Hustle,’ I was so impressed by him that I knew I needed to have him as a part of Annapurna,...

He will oversee the development and production of Annapurna projects and report to Megan Ellison, who announced his appointment today. Gordon, who has worked as an independent producer and executive, most recently produced American Hustle with Ellison, Charles Roven and Richard Suckle and Silver Linings Playbook with Bruce Cohen and Donna Gigliotti. After they took on cancer to hilarious, heartbreaking results in 50/50, director Jonathan Levine and actors Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are set to reteam for a currently untitled Christmas comedy housed over at Sony. News about the film has been nonexistent since February, when Rogen and Gordon-Levitt were confirmed. Now, however, it’s been revealed that Anthony Mackie has joined the cast, presumably as the third friend.
Both written and directed by Levine, the comedy centers on three childhood friends who reunite in the Big Apple for a Christmas Eve of chaotic revelry they promised to undertake years before. Nothing else has really been confirmed about the film’s plot, but given that it will mark the reunion of Levine, Rogen and Gordon-Levitt, I’m expecting something similar in spirit to 50/50, which delivered raunchy comedy with a huge, beating heart. Though the basic plot makes it sound like a typical bromantic comedy,...

As cheesy as it is to start an article about a new Flash Gordon movie with 'Gordon's alive!!!', that is exactly what went through my head when I read the news. Beginning life as serialized comic strip in 1934, the galaxy travelling adventurer first foray into movies in 1980 wasn't what you would call a box office success, but over the years it has become a genuine cult classic. Now, 20th Century Fox have acquired the rights to the character, marking its 80th anniversary this year, with The Adjustment Bureau director George Nolfi providing the outline for the story, which will be expanded upon by Star Trek 3 scribes Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. There is no word on whether Nolfi will direct. The project is only in development at this stage, so no word on when we will actually see this. via THR...

Flash Gordon is set to return to the big screen, as 20th Century Fox have today closed a deal to pick up the rights to the character in a package which has J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay on board to write the script.
The duo are currently hard at work on Star Trek 3, and producer John Davis (Chronicle, Man from U.N.C.L.E.) is spearheading the project and actually brought on George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Adjustment Bureau) to pen a treatment. Nolfi will now also serve as a producer on the movie.
Payne and McKay are also responsible for adapting graphic novel Boilerplate and a big screen take on 1970s toyline Micronauts for J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, so it’s clear that they’ve impressed him enough to land a job on Star Trek 3 despite being relative newcomers.

Much like I wrote about the actors, actresses, and filmmakers in Hollywood who are overdue to win an Oscar a few weeks ago, there are tons in the industry who are way overdue merely for their first nomination by the Academy. Some of them have gotten close in the past, while others have yet to really sniff that sort of acclaim. They’re both newcomers to the business and old hands, with plenty of in between as well. In my eyes, there are some really overdue ones in particular, and I figured I’d cite some of them here in this article. Narrowing it down to just ten is really difficult, but I wanted to mix and match between different members of the industry and attempt to include some who will have 2014 releases in contention, as you’ll see momentarily… Below you’ll find ten members of the industry who...

Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Tony Danza, Julianne Moore, Brie Larson | Written and Directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Joseph Gordon-Levitt has seemingly been everywhere as of late. He has unquestionably come a very long way since his days as a child star. Recently his career ventured into entirely new territory with the release of Don Jon. He has moved behind the camera for the first time as both writer and director.
Don Jon is about a man who only truly cares about a few things in life. Among that list are his body, his pad, his family, and perhaps most importantly his porn. This directorial debut assuredly lands on the positive side. It is charming, clever, and extremely engaging. Unlike most Romantic Comedies—if you even want to consider this a Romantic Comedy—it actually has something to say. Now there are some bumps along this newly paved road. Some of...

A pair of flicks that were shut out at the Oscars on Sunday lead the field for the erstwhile music network’s film nods. American Hustle and The Wolf Of Wall Street snagged eight noms apiece for the 23rd MTV Movie Awards. Close behind are The Hunger Games: Catching Fire with seven and We’re The Millers with six, including a coveted Best Shirtless Performance nom for Jennifer Aniston. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Dallas Buyers Club, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, This Is The End and Best Picture champ 12 Years A Slave are next with four apiece. Conan O’Brien will serve as host of this year’s festivities, which air live on April 13 at the Nokia Theatre in L.A. The show — which last year switched from its longtime post-Memorial Day date to April — again relishes is such signature categories as Best Kiss, Best Scared-As-s**T Performance and #WTFMoment,...

12 Years a Slave, Gravity, American Hustle, Captain Phillips and Philomena have the majority of nominations and are all competing for Best Picture. It is an undeniably strong year for British Film and we’re grateful for a spotlight as wide and as bright as this one to be shone this evening.
If you haven’t already checked out our BAFTA competition, do so now - the prizes are worth £700. Blimey.
We’ll be updating this liveblog minute by minute until my fingers fall off with the most recent update being shown at the top of the top so do keep refreshing.
Great to have you with us.
