As a Gen Xer who grew up fascinated by The Six Million Dollar Man and in turn tuned in for Lee Majors’ The Fall Guy, I walked into the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt movie this weekend with a certain excitement, but also tempered expectations.
As a rule, I don’t read reviews before seeing a movie. But I’d glimpsed enough headlines and social media chatter to know that The Fall Guy was only (very) “loosely” based on the ABC action series that ran for five seasons. I like Gosling, love Blunt and enjoy stunt work, so I decided to take a flyer on this.

There are not many stars who can match the love commanded by Taylor Swift from her fans. The singer has seen it all, an ascent to fame that would see her rise to the top of the industry, a fall that would leave her scarring for quite some time, and a resurgence people will speak tales of. She really is an icon.
The chronicles of Taylor Swift are never-ending. Even though she has found herself on the wrong side of the media at times, that has not dampened her prospects even a little. Her recent achievement is a testament to how the surrounding noise matters little to Swift (and Swifties).

Despite garnering positive reviews after its premiere at the 2024 SXSW, the action comedy film The Fall Guy failed to meet the box office expectations after it finally hit the theatres on May 3. The film, which was projected to make at least $30 million in its opening weekend, has fallen short to $28.5 million.

While some attribute the underwhelming box office performance to the availability of day-and-date PVOD on Disney+, experts argue that the film’s reception is consistent with the challenges faced by original action comedies in theaters.
Expert Analyse the Reason Behind The Fall Guy’s Box Office Struggles
Following what has been described as a disappointing box-office performance, industry expert Scott Mendelson has shared his argument on why the PVOD release strategy might not be the sole reason behind The Fall Guy’s underwhelming opening at the box office.

Recording artist Dua Lipa just released her latest album this past week, so there's no better time for the pop star to pull double duty as the host and musical guest of "Saturday Night Live." Of course, her first time taking on the honor unfortunately comes after Ryan Gosling hosted a banger of an episode, packed with viral gems like the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch. But if your expectations were firmly in check, then you probably enjoyed this lukewarm, fairly amusing but not raucously hilarious episode of "SNL."
Thankfully, Dua Lipa turned out to be a solid host alongside her musical guest duties. She was game to jump into a variety of characters, didn't severely derail any sketches with subpar performances, and she was even willing to make jokes at her own expense during the monologue. However, the sketches were not exactly of the highest quality, and though Dua Lipa did her best,...

Movies these days are more of a production than a simple story led by a cast. If there is no pomp and circus around it, chances are, it won’t do much business. Even with some really popular names attached to projects, sometimes that is not enough. And Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt starrer The Fall Guy is a prime example of that.

Sometimes, even if a movie has good reviews and high critic scores, people tend to wait for it to get to streaming services to watch it, rather than buying tickets for the theaters. When Universal decided to jump on the first weekend of May, a slot normally taken up by Marvel’s popular superhero movies, they were hoping the combo of “Barbenheimer” stars, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, would make “The Fall Guy” a huge early summer hit. That’s not what happened. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, “The Fall Guy” had everything going for it, from two of the biggest Oscar-nominated stars from 2023’s biggest blockbusters – one who recently hosted “Saturday Night Live” to great success – plus reviews had been great going back to its premiere at the SXSW Film and TV Festival. Universal even screened the movie for exhibitors (i.e. theater owners) at the annual CinemaCon to get excitement going for the start of the summer movie season.

City of stars, there’s so much that I can’t see…But unfortunately for Ryan Gosling, there’s one thing he can’t unsee from La La Land: his hand. No matter how much 2016’s La La Land did for Gosling’s reputation and awards prestige, he is forever embarrassed by one frame from the near-Best Picture winner; and unfortunately, that image became the most famous from the movie, even being selected for the poster.
As Ryan Gosling recently revealed, his hand positioning in the “A Lovely Night” sequence – in which Sebastian (Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) dance at the Griffith Observatory in an enchanting single shot – has haunted him ever since the movie’s marketing campaign. “There’s a moment that haunts me where we’re dancing, Emma and I. With ”The Fall Guy” (Universal), summer 2024 box office didn’t kick off; it just sort of happened. It opened to $28.5 million, a 52 percent drop from last year with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Hopefully, that will be the last precipitous weekend drop (aside from the inevitable “Barbie”/”Oppenheimer” July weekend of $310 million).
This $76 million domestic weekend is bad, but “The Fall Guy” shortfall is worse. Estimates were broad, but worst-case scenarios predicted $30 million. The Ryan Gosling action rom-com had all the earmarks of audience appeal. Whatever its possible limitations — and a $130 million budget — that’s a terrible look to start the summer.
Despite good reviews, Gosling’s momentum, director David Leitch’s proven box office success, the usually lucrative playdate, and a decent A- Cinemascore, “The Fall Guy” opened to only a little more than $3 million above “Civil War” (A24), April’s best opener.

The film had been forecast to open in the low $30m range and Universal executives are looking at the long play and will hope it gathers momentum powered by word of mouth and an A- CinemaScore result.

George Lucas is unarguably one of the best masters of science fiction storytelling, and the Star Wars saga only proves just how immensely talented he is. Not only has he created jaw-dropping storylines for this universe, but he has also introduced some of the most out-of-the-world characters. This also includes getting influenced by other universes and basing his own characters on them.

Surprisingly enough, Cad Bane, who is regarded as one of the most dangerous bounty hunters in this sci-fi universe, was created after Lucas was inspired by a character from Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy. But what’s iconic is that this particular bounty hunter is actually based on Lee Van Cleef’s Angel Eyes, the enigmatic character from the Clint Eastwood-starrer trilogy.

While the big-screen adaptation of The Fall Guy was never expected to open to mega-blockbuster numbers, no one thought the well-reviewed Ryan Gosling movie would stumble out of the gate to this extent. Indeed, Hollywood insiders assumed this had a shot at a $40 million plus opening (we expected about $35 million). Now it looks like David Leitch’s film will only make $28.5 million over what’s widely considered the first weekend of the summer movie season. Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made $110 million in the same frame.
The Fall Guy was never expected to open anywhere near that number. Indeed, it was originally planned as a March release, only to be moved thanks to how empty the release calendar is due to the SAG/WGA strikes from last year. Still, given how well it was reviewed (we loved it) and the fact that stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt...

Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” scratched up $22 million in its international box office debut. It’s currently only playing in 18 markets, roughly 35% of its eventual overseas footprint, so those ticket sales represent a promising start for the family film.
“The Garfield Movie” doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Memorial Day weekend on May 24. When it does land in domestic theaters, it’s projected to earn $35 million over the long weekend and will compete for first place with director George Miller’s “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa.”
Overseas, “The Garfield Movie” enjoyed the biggest start in Spain with $3.2 million over five days, followed by Brazil with $2.2 million, Italy with $1.6 million and Peru with $1.3 million. According to the studio, revenues for the film are pacing 76% above fellow kid-friendly film “DC League of Super Pets” (which eventually earned $113 million internationally) and 41% higher than “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish...

“The Fall Guy,” an action-comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, kicked off the summer movie season without much sizzle.
The film, backed by Universal and directed by David Leitch, fell just short of expectations with $28.5 million from 4,002 North American venues in its debut. Heading into the weekend, “The Fall Guy” was projected to earn at least $30 million to $40 million. The trouble is that the movie cost $140 million to produce, so it needs strong word of mouth and interest at the international box office to recoup its budget during its theatrical run. “The Fall Guy” opened to $25.4 million overseas, bringing its global total to $65.4 million.
“This is a fair opening for a big action-comedy,” says David A. Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “Action comedies are solid performers overseas, and with this cast, foreign business should be good. At [its] cost, ‘The Fall Guy’ is going to need a long run.

It was the ‘80s and ‘90s all over again at the weekend box office. Universal’s The Fall Guy, the Ryan Gosling starrer inspired by the 1980s TV show, kicked off the summer movie season at No. 1 with $28.5 million, while Disney’s re-release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace surprised by coming in at No. 2 with $8.1 million.
Despite The Fall Guy’s No. 1 finish, its haul came in behind initial expectations of $30 million to $35 million, and overall the box office is down dramatically from the same frame a year ago, when Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 bowed to $118.4 million domestically. The weekend is down 53 percent from last year, and off more than 66 percent from 2022, when Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened to $187.4 million domestically.
The Fall Guy is said to have a net budget of $130 million after tax incentives for shooting in Australia.

Sunday Am Writethru after Saturday Am Update: Universal’s The Fall Guy isn’t so strong, and nobody is really shocked.
While it was projected to do at least $30M, and it’s coming in at $28.5M, this is the range for original action comedies, even when they star Ryan Gosling. PostTrak exits report he’s 50% of the reason why people went to see the movie (versus 35% for Emily Blunt). Pic took in $25.4M from offshore marketings raising its foreign gross to $36.9M, global to $65.4M.
The opening for Fall Guy is actually on the higher end of Gosling starts, ranked third after anomaly Barbie ($162M) and Blade Runner 2049 ($32.7M), yet further down on Blunt’s. It’s the ninth-best opening of her career stateside, short of Edge of Tomorrow ($28.7M) and Jungle Cruise ($35M with an asterisk – it did have a theatrical day-and-date PVOD on Disney+).
So, what gives?...

Fans of light-hearted and fun action movies are having their day in the sun with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt‘s new action comedy film The Fall Guy. Loosely based on a 1980s TV series of the same name by Glen A. Larson and directed by Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch, the Universal Pictures film follows the story of Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who returns to work after taking a year-long break due to an injury. Colt’s latest gig is at a high-budget blockbuster sci-fi film directed by his ex-girlfriend who he still loves and when the main actor of her film disappears, Colt must find him and bring him back. DC’s The Flash Starring Ezra Miller Was Released In 2023 But Flopped At The Box Office ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
One of DC’s most ambitious projects was one of their worst box office failures. The Flash was an astounding failure despite its much-hyped status. The movie was clouded by the scandal of its lead, Ezra Miller, but its net profit suffered because of everything’s storyline. After a year, the movie emerged as the second most significant failure of 2023 and lost considerable money.
There was a lot of anticipation about The Flash, especially with the rumors of a Michael Keaton cameo. However, the movie’s public suffered after lead star Ezra Miller was arrested for heinous allegations. Still, die-hard fans of the franchise showed up, but it wasn’t enough. After years of production issues, the movie persevered to eventually hit theaters despite the controversies surrounding its lead actor and...

Here’s a little observation, bordering on an axiom, which has slowly developed over the years—as in, approximately half a century:
When Saturday Night Live returns from a hiatus, the first show back struggles to find both its rhythm and sketches that are well conceived and consistently funny.
SNL’s return last night carried with it a special challenge, because the last show before the break, hosted by Ryan Gosling, was arguably the funniest of the season, with one sketch, the Beavis and Butthead unaware look-a-likes, now the most-viewed clip of the current season.
And so, when the cold open tiptoed into risky territory, trying to find a way to get laughs out of the divisive and decidedly unfunny protests against the war in Gaza, a familiar sense of “oh it’s that hiatus issue” set in.
It even seemed as though the writers were sending a signal about...

Emily Blunt is revealing what movie she did her most “stressful” stunt in, and her answer may surprise some fans.
The Oscar-nominated actress may have been surrounded by death-defying stunts in her latest movie, The Fall Guy, but she recently told People magazine that her scariest stunt was actually in 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns.
“That entrance was very stressful for me,” she recalled of the scene.
Blunt, who took over the memorable Julie Andrews role for Disney’s musical sequel, explained that her character’s entrance “had to start in the clouds and come all the way down toward the ground while holding an umbrella aloft. And I’m supposed to walk effortlessly into my close-up as if it’s nothing.”
The Oppenheimer star added, “I did three takes — and then I felt my tolerance go, ‘Pfft!’ And that was it. I was done.”

There is such a thing as getting too much press, it turns out, and Jerry Seinfeld definitely hit that point as he dropped by this week’s Saturday Night Live.

Colin Jost introduced him simply as “a man who did too much press,” and a harried Seinfeld sat down looking exhausted and disheveled. He didn’t even know which show he was on: “Is this a podcast?...

Ryan Gosling’s recently released film, The Fall Guy, has put Taylor Swift’s music in the 2024 movie and people are confused. With the film based on stuntmen and women who risk their lives every day for 2 minutes of action on-screen, a Taylor Swift song seems out of the blue.
But the music supervisor and producer Kelly McCormick (who’s a Swiftie) talked about the song’s importance in the film and how it plays out. Having Gosling as the sacrificial stuntman in the film who loses all, a Swift song from her album Red seems perfect.
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in The Fall Guy (2024).
How Ryan Gosling Cried To Taylor Swift’s Song In The Fall Guy!
Being a story about stuntmen and women, the action sequences are obviously terrific. The promotion of the film had real stuntmen breaking through a glass door while Ryan Gosling walked before them.

Jerry Seinfeld joined “Saturday Night Live’s” Weekend Update to make fun of his press tour for his Netflix movie, “Unfrosted,” which chronicles the origin story of the Pop-Tart.
Colin Jost introduced Seinfeld as a “man who did too much press” for his Netflix movie, which also marked Seinfeld’s directorial debut. When Seinfeld joined the show, he pretended to be unsure of where he was.
“Where am I exactly? Is this a podcast?” he asked Jost.
Jost explained to Seinfeld he’s live on “SNL” and has seen him doing promo for his Netflix movie “everywhere.” When asked how much press is too much, Seinfeld replied, “You don’t know until someone who cares about you shows you a video package and you see yourself with people with these names like Hoda, Mo Rocca, Chanel, Vlad.”

Saturday Night Live‘s latest cold open centered on Columbia University’s handling of the pro-Palestinian protests on campus amid the Israel–Hamas war.
During the sketch, Mikey Day, Kenan Thompson and Heidi Gardner played concerned parents of students participating in the protests.
Last week, hundreds of demonstrators were arrested after the school’s president called the New York Police Department to help restore order on campus. Police cleared the university’s Hamilton Hall after protesters occupied the administration building earlier in the day.
After being asked their thoughts on the protests, Gardner initially responded, “It’s been tough. Now, I’m all for free speech, but I don’t understand what they think they’re accomplishing and that’s really putting a strain on me and my daughter’s relationship.”
Thompson later shared his thoughts: “Nothing makes me prouder than young people using their voices to fight for what they believe in.

Following a buzz-worthy premiere at this year’s SXSW Festival, Universal Pictures released “The Fall Guy” nationwide on May 3. The film directed by David Leitch and written by Drew Pearce is loosely based on the 1980s TV series about stunt performers. Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling stars as Colt Seavers, a stuntman working on his ex-girlfriend’s (Emily Blunt) directorial debut action film, only to find himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the film’s lead actor.
Early reviews for the action comedy have been overwhelmingly positive. The Fall Guy Stunt Precision and Record Breakthrough In the world of cinematic stunts, few films have pushed the envelope as effectively as The Fall Guy. At the center of these gravity-defying feats is Logan Holladay, a stuntman who not only worked alongside notable actor Ryan Gosling, but also made history by executing a spectacular record-breaking stunt. Holladay’s achievement in the film was no small feat. During one of the film’s climax scenes, Holladay was responsible for a car cannon roll that went beyond expectations. Action romance is a tricky genre to master — it requires the right balance of heart and spectacle. But when done well, à la “True Lies” or “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” it will live on forever in the rewatch rotation.
Stunt coordinator-turned-director David Leitch has launched cars straight into the air and staged fight scenes that have had theaters erupting in thunderous cheers. His latest challenge, however, will be making the audience’s heart melt with “The Fall Guy,” in theaters now. Smartly, he cast Ryan Gosling, the living embodiment of a junior high schooler’s diary entry, to play the hero.
Adapted from the 1980s series, the Universal film follows down-at-his-heels action choreographer Colt Seavers (Gosling), who must unravel a treacherous mystery while on the set of the next big blockbuster. The movie happens to be directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt.

Guys rock! Who doesn't love guys? Whether they're free or falling, guys really have a lot to offer. The latest guy movie on the scene is "The Fall Guy," starring Ryan Gosling as the titular guy: a professional stunt guy who accidentally becomes targeted by a bunch of criminal guys. The film was directed by David Leitch, who has previously directed other guys in movies like "John Wick," "Deadpool 2," and "Bullet Train."
After grossing $10.4 million on its opening day, including $3.15 million from Thursday previews, "The Fall Guy" is now on track to gross around $28 million in its opening weekend (per Variety). That puts it on par with another recent guy movie, "Free Guy," which starred Ryan Gosling's fellow Ryan (and fellow guy), Ryan Reynolds. "Free Guy" grossed $28.3 million upon its release in 2021 and went on to make $331 million worldwide -- a modest success against its $100-125 million budget.
