With "State of the Art – Innovation, Storytelling and Technology," AFI Fest 2015 is turning an eye to one possible future for filmmaking: virtual reality. The two-day sidebar, featuring panel discussions with leading artists, interactive installations, and Vr stations for festival attendees, also includes a keynote address by animator, Vr pioneer, and Disney vet Glen Keane. Immersive storytelling and virtual reality, building on the popularity of video games, interactive media, and 3D, may well be the next frontier for cinema, and as a result the "State of the Art" slate is far from theoretical. One panel offers creative and technical guidance from filmmakers Janicza Bravo ("Hard World for Little Things") and Matthew Gratzner, whose "cinematic Virtual Reality experience" "The Mission"—which follows a WWII Special Operations team on the Eastern Front—will be one of the films on view during the event; another focuses on the...

Usually when a movie sequel begins filming, it.s because the predecessor has already been released, and either audiences or studios are clamoring for another trip to that cinematic universe. But that.s just not the case for Matthew Gratzner.s indie western Hot Bath an. a Stiff Drink, which already has a follow-up in production despite not having been released yet. Not only that, but its cast just got a little bigger, as Frankie Muniz, Alison Eastwood and genre everyman Robert Patrick have all signed on. Not additions that make you want to run out and sell your children to watch it, but it.s a step up from the first film.s lesser-known actors. Variety has no plot description for the film besides a setting in the 1890s, and one has to wonder where the story can go. The first film starred Jeffrey Patterson as a U.S.

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?

As you know, we at Shadowlocked.com get to do some pretty cool things – interviews, game reviews, films reviews, and we get to go to places and do things that we know we are very privileged to see and do. Well, I got to do a very cool thing.
I’ve had the chance to catch-up with one of my all-time heroes, one of the Hollywood legends in the movie making process. He’s a man who has had an incredible career, and not only as a designer of some of the most incredible and iconic vehicles and sets in some of the biggest movies in the world. This man has shown us the future of civilisation, made it feel real; in developing public spaces, restaurants, computer games, watches, cars, posters, books and more. You know who it is? No?

Generally, I have avoided trying to interview the personal heroes of my youth; it's too risky to one's cherished perceptions. But when faced with the opportunity to chat with Paul Darrow, the British actor who played the laconic and back-shooting anti-hero Avon of 'Blake's 7' (as well as the voice of Grand Moff Tarkin and other characters in 'Star Wars' videogames), I figured I'd take a chance. After all, if he shot me down in flames, at least he'd be in character...
I was, of course, delighted to find that Mr. Darrow retains all the charm and more of his most famous role without the accompanying barbs. Here we chat about Paul's excellent turn as Lord Rathen in the exceptional Sf/fantasy audio drama 'The Minister Of Chance', as well as how Avon came to shoot people in the back despite being the 'hero' of a major BBC sci-fi show,...

Before I go any further, I should put the title of this piece into context by saying that I am Not a CGI luddite myself. I have been doing 3D modelling and illustration for nearly 15 years in C4D, Max, the continually-amazing ZBrush and many other apps, and can honestly count the emergence of the T-Rex in Jurassic Park as a life-changing moment. So what follows (in case you can't be bothered to read it but find the title irksome) is not a luddite rant against voxels, just a few thoughts about the way we perceive visual effects, and why CGI continues to bother so many people in comparison to previous methods of screen magic...

We're not sure if anyone has already stumbled across this (we did by accident) but it doesn't seem to have made the Interweb radar yet—the official website for director Matthew Gratzner's remake of the classic UFO series has gone live, though there's not a lot on the site as of yet.
What you will find at the Flash-only portal is a partial image of what appears to be an Interceptor. It looks a lot like the original design, but does seem to have a few differences here and there. Whether this is a representation of the final design is hard to say, but it's intriguing to see it nevertheless.
Other items on the site include the film's title logo, as well as a brief glimpse shortly after the page loads of the new S.H.A.D.O. logo. S.H.A.D.O., as you UFO aficionados already know,...

Back in March, word emerged that director Matthew Gratzner and special effects artist Jules Urbach are spearheading a feature film adaption of "Gaiking," based on a '70s Japanese anime series that is better known in America as part of the "Shogun Warriors" toy line.
Gratzner and Urbach also released an impressive teaser trailer when the initial announcement was made. And while the film is still looking for a home, the filmmakers will soon be searching for potential screenwriters, according to Urbach.
"I guess you can say we're in preproduction," said Urbach during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "The reason we released the teaser when we did is we're done designing the robot." And even a lot of the costumes and the characters."
"We basically put as much as was ready to be shown in the teaser. And the next step is get a writer — we have a treatment...

One month ago, Ain't It Cool News broke an exclusive story about a new film based on Gaiking, a giant mech member of the Shogun Warriors. The Shogun Warriors were popularized via a number of manga and anime TV series during the 1970s, not to mention the legendary Japanese toy line that was licensed by Mattel. It was also the subject of a 20-issue series by Marvel Comics. The Gaiking project was originally supposed to be a 7-minute short attached to Fincher's Heavy Metal, but after that project moved to another studio, Jules Urbach took it and ran with it, and now it looks on track to be a full-blown feature film with Matthew Gratzner directing. Urbach was one of the founders of Lightstage, the company that developed the 3-D character mapping technology you saw in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Unsurprisingly, the Gaiking film will also use Lightstage.

In the 1970s, Mattel released a "Shogun Warriors" toy line that consisted of several imported Japanese toys that were based on a popular anime series. A bit later Marvel adapted the property into a 20-issue comic book. AICN has now learned that one of the characters from the series, Gaiking, will be heading to the big screen. The rest of the Shogun Warriors will soon follow. The first film is being set for a 2012 release under the supervision of director Matthew Gratzner. "We are building the robots Life Size," said special effects artist Jules Urbach. "Matt [Gratzner] is one of the last great practical effects guys in the business who can pull this off." Urbach also gave the site a glimpse at some CGI footage that was specifically created to showcase the look and tone of "Gaiking." Check out the teaser below, but keep in mind that the final film may not look exactly like this.

During this past weekend at the 2010 Tokyo Animation Fair, Toei Animation has announced plans to reboot Gaiking into a CG/live action film. For those unaware, Gaiking is a "Super Robot" mecha anime series from the 70's and in the Us, it was part of Mattel's Shogun Warriors import toy line and Force Five anthology cartoon series. Ain't It Cool managed to get their hands on the teaser trailer and break the news on how the project was originally planned as a short film for David Fincher's Heavy Metal project and that multiple characters from the Shogun Warriors universe may have an appearance but the exact details won't be reveal until this year's Comic-con in July.

Three or four years ago, you may recall, there was some chatter online about a new Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea feature film, based upon the classic '60s motion picture and television series created & produced by the late Irwin Allen. While there was apparently some movement towards fashioning a big screen epic, the whole thing seemed to fizzle shortly after it was announced. The runaway success of last summer's rebooted Star Trek — and the recent news about director Matthew Gratzner's forthcoming re-imagination of Gerry Anderson's UFO, not to mention the whole Hollywood trend towards remakes — got us thinking once again about those other classic mid-to-late-'60s science fiction properties—which led us back to wondering what's happening with Voyage, if anything. Might there be renewed interest in it?
As it turns out, a new Voyage feature film is still simmering. In an exclusive interview with writer/director/producer Kevin Burns,...

Being old and Canadian, I was treated in my post larvae stage to some fine 70’s British Sci-Fi television. Nobody did great Sci-Fi with no money like the Brits. Coming soon to a theatre near you will be a remake of the wicked “UFO”, where aliens once again invade, but this time, instead of stopping at mere subjugation and tyranny, the Aliens (that’s all they were called) used us for our tender fleshy inner bits. “UFO” was created by the same team that dropped the geektastic Stingray, Thunderbirds, and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson. Oh those were the days. This new version will star Joshua Jackson, now experienced in the Sci-Fi thanks to “Fringe” and will be helmed by Matthew Gratzner. Joshua will play Paul Foster, a test pilot that joins Shado, an organization that pretends to be a movie studio but instead is...

There seems to be a slow and steady drive towards remaking everything that ever appeared on British television. I suppose that's all right (they do have fantastic shows and made-for-television movies in the United Kingdom) but what happens on that dark day when Hollywood runs out of British productions? Yikes. Let's not think about that, and turn instead to the dark version of 1980 that's being remade for the modern viewer, as Variety reports that British favorite UFO is being re-imagined for the big screen. UFO will be helmed by Matthew Gratzner, and will star Joshua Jackson.
The British premise for UFO was set in the near future (ten years in their case -- the show aired in 1970 and took place in 1980) where aliens had conquered Earth. Naturally, they didn't do so with altruistic means, but to use us as an organ harvesting ground. Humanity's future lay with Shado, (Supreme Headquarters...

The Robert Evans-produced film adaptation UFO has been moving steadily closer and closer to release, with visual effects guru Matthew Gratzner hired to direct and now Joshua Jackson hired to head up the cast in the feature adaptation of the cult 1970s Gerry Anderson show.Jackson will play Paul Foster, a test pilot who joins Shado, the secret organisation based beneath a film studio and dedicated to fighting aliens. In the TV series, Foster became aware of the existence of both Shado and aliens after his jet was severely damaged in an air battle between the two, and started an investigation that threatened to reveal Shado's existence. The organisation's head, Ed Straker, considered having Foster killed, but was sufficiently impressed to recruit him instead. It kinda seems to us like that particular storyline would make a very good introduction to Shado's world for cinemagoers, so we wouldn't be surprised...

It took me a while to get used to seeing Dawson Creek star Joshua Jackson in Fringe, but like the series itself, Jackson eventually found a groove that I enjoyed revisiting. Now it seems he's sticking with the supernatural themes from Fringe with his next project. Jackson has signed on for the lead in UFO, an adaptation of the cult-hit British TV series. Jackson will be playing the of Paul Foster, which Variety describes (along with the plot) as "a test pilot who joins S.H.A.D.O. I haven't heard much about this series, but I could definitely see the premise working for a decent B-level sci-fi romp. The film will be directed by Matthew Gratzner, a...

Joshua Jackson has been on a bit of a comeback the last few years thanks, would you believe it, to television. Returning to film -- but not leaving television -- the actor has agreed to star in UFO, the feature film version of the British TV series that will be directed by Matthew Gratzner.
Joshua Jackson for UFO
Gratzner not sound familiar? Well, take comfort in knowing that he definitely has the experience. The helmer served as the visual effects supervisor on films ranging from Shutter Island to Iron Man.
Adapted by scribes Ryan Gaudet and Joseph Kanarek, UFO will have Jackson star as Paul Foster, a test pilot who joins S.H.A.D.O. (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert org built under a Hollywood studio that defends Earth against a race of aliens who have been abducting humans and using the body parts.

Though my inner-child still knows him as Charlie Conway, captain of The Mighty Ducks, actor Joshua Jackson made an impressive leap from hockey and a certain titular creek into sci-fi. On the Fox TV series "Fringe," Jackson has investigated cases that would make Mulder and Scully blush. Now he's sticking with sci-fi as Variety reports he is set to star in UFO, an adaptation of a 70's British television series about a test pilot, Paul Foster, who joins S.H.A.D.O. I've never seen "Fringe," so I have to assume that it's a science fiction show about a few teenagers working out their relationship problems, sneaking into each other's bedrooms and pondering deep, deep thoughts out on the local lake. Now, Joshua Jackson will be attempting to build a film career off of his television career on said show. What's that you say? He's already done this once before? Good to know. Also good to know is that Variety is reporting that the star has signed on to play the lead in the film adaptation of a cult hit 1970s British television show (you can see why Hollywood is clamoring for it). This raises two questions: Can an actor jump to movies, fail, jump back to television, and then jump back into movies and succeed? Where the hell is our big screen "Red Dwarf" movie? The second is clearly the more important, but...

One Of The kitsch classics of 70s sci-fi is to be revived and adapted into a Hollywood feature film.
British TV series UFO, which aired in 1970 and 1971, is fondly remembered for lead character Commander Ed Straker (pictured left), played by the late Ed Bishop, who bleached his hair for the first few episodes but then ended up wearing a white wig.
You may also recall the female crew on Moonbase - including actress Gabrielle Drake (pictured above) - with their purple bobbed hairdos, dramatic eye make-up and silver jumpsuits. Their commander was the glamorous Colonel Virginia Lake (pictured below), played by Wanda Ventham.
Now, nearly four decades later, the show - created by sci-fi veterans Gerry and Sylvia Anderson - is to be navigated on to the big screen by visual effects guru Matthew Gratzner, in his directorial debut, reports Variety.
