He also was a staff writer for music publishers between 1920 and 1928, and following that he formed his own firm. Joining ASCAP in 1921, his chief musical collaborators included Les Brown, Buddy G. DeSylva, Al Dubin, Ella Fitzgerald, Slim Gaillard, Ray Henderson, Ben Homer, Raymond Scott, Sam Stept and Harry Warren.
