This review was written for the festival screening of "The Last Mimzy". PARK CITY -- New Line Cinema honcho Robert Shaye makes a rare appearance in the director's chair (his first since 1990's "Book of Love") bringing the well-regarded short story "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" to the big screen as the family-friendly fantasy "The Last Mimzy".
In the process the Lewis Padgett piece, first published in a 1943 science-fiction collection, has been turned into a reasonably engaging movie filled with fun visual effects and an appealing tone reminiscent of a certain Spielberg movie about an out-of-his-element extraterrestrial.
While the Shaye picture, which was given an advance preview in conjunction with a New Line 40-year retrospective conversation hosted by Sundance director Geoffrey Gilmore, won't be phoning home those "E.T". figures, "Mimzy" packs sufficient whimsy to make it a solid performer when it lands in theaters on March 23.
Despite the spelling change, screenwriters Bruce Joel Rubin ("Ghost") and Toby Emmerich ("Frequency") are unlikely to offend many purists in their update of the original work, about a box of educational toys that have been sent back from the future to the present. The original title took its cue from a line in Lewis Carroll's poem "Jabberwocky".
Here, the Mimzy in question is an innocuous-looking, well-traveled toy bunny found among mysterious items in a box that turns up floating behind the Wilder family waterfront vacation home in Seattle.
Opting not to share their discovery with their workaholic dad (Timothy Hutton) and overly cautious mom (Joely Richardson), siblings Noah (Chris O'Neil) and Emma Rhiannon Leigh Wryn) soon discover that playing with the newfound objects has a profound effect on their intelligence levels.
It's a development that doesn't go unnoticed by Noah's teacher, Mr. White ("The Office's" Rainn Wilson), who detects a higher purpose in the boy's complex geometric doodles that bear an eerie resemblance to the ancient configurations that keep popping up in his dreams.
Emma, meanwhile, has been picking up telepathically on Mimzy's warnings regarding the survival of the inhabitants of the future and has to act fast before special government agent Nathaniel Boardman Michael Clarke Duncan), who's investigating the source of a citywide blackout, gets to her.
Viewers willing to go along for the ride should be agreeably charmed by the yarn. And whenever developments threaten to push the boundaries of credibility a little too far, Wilson's character reins in the excess with his sardonic line delivery.
But even he can't salvage a jarringly clunky bit of product placement concerning Mimzy's internal make-up that yanks older viewers out of the mythology with little time left to bring them back into the fold.
Fortunately, Shaye ultimately manages to win enough of them over with the help of his inventive visual effects team, his energetic cast and a gently expansive Howard Shore score, assuring "Mimzy" a promising future.

There's an irresistible, mythic power to stories of underdog triumph. For sports fans, high on the list of the most inspiring of such tales is the against-all-odds victory of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. Taking on the world champion Soviets, sweeping the Games and winning the gold medal, the strictly nonpro team also roused Americans when, the film "Miracle" posits, they needed it most.
In an about-face from his debut feature "Tumbleweeds", director Gavin O'Connor has made a family-friendly but far more satisfying drama. Working with the producing team behind the terrific baseball film "The Rookie", the helmer has achieved outstanding verisimilitude in his dramatization of matches that made history. But what will make the film compelling even for audiences who never heard of the miracle on ice is Kurt Russell's taut, nuanced portrait of Herb Brooks, the coach who gave "tough love" a whole new meaning. "Miracle" is bound to be a solid scorer for Disney.
Sometimes overreaching to support its central theory, Eric Guggenheim's script lays out the political/social context of 1979-80, when Americans felt increasingly beaten down and hopeless in the face of the Iranian hostage crisis, gas shortages and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In one of the best moments, Brooks tells his wife (Patricia Clarkson) that while fans are urging him to "beat the commie bastards," he views the Soviet team simply as the world's best hockey players.
Brooks is determined to create a crew that can play the same "fluid, creative" style of hockey as the Soviets, who had dominated the sport for almost two decades. Hired seven months before the Lake Placid (N.Y.) Games, the University of Minnesota coach uses an unorthodox approach to turn a ragtag bunch of college athletes into a world-class team. Underlying the coach's single-mindedness is a lost Olympic opportunity that haunts and drives him. When he barks at his players, "Common men go nowhere", the self-knowledge is apparent.
Though his tactics often border on the sadistic, the coach shrewdly unites his players by antagonizing them and wearing them down, in the process making them not only a team but a highly conditioned one.
The screenplay effectively conveys this through grueling practice sessions, but there are occasional lapses when characters insistently state the theme in ways that don't ring true.
For the team, the filmmakers sought hockey players who can act and actors who play hockey. As a result, the scenes set on ice have an immediacy, and the fresh-faced performers are believable. Eddie Cahill ("Friends") makes his screen debut as the legendary goalie Jim Craig, and Olympian Buzz Schneider is portrayed by his son, Billy Schneider.
Still, there's little real sense of the sport itself or of team dynamics until the payoff: the extraordinary re-creation of the climactic game against the Soviets, seamlessly combining the cast's skating with ABC Sports commentator Al Michaels' original play-by-play. Daniel Stoloff's vivid widescreen camerawork and the vigorous editing of John Gilroy put the viewer right in the action.
Russell's portrayal of Brooks (who served as a consultant to the filmmakers and died last year before the movie was complete) gets all the mannerisms right, whether he's studying home movies of games or tensely chewing gum from the sidelines. He deftly shows the cracks in the self-contained facade, and there's a particularly poignant moment when he walks away from the rink to savor his victory alone -- making the film's final rah-rah voice-over all the more disappointing and unnecessary.
In her biggest studio role to date, indie queen Clarkson imprints a slim role with her usual wry intelligence, while Noah Emmerich fits the bill as the assistant coach who plays good cop to Brooks' taskmaster. The period comes alive in the production design of John Willett and costumes by Tom Bronson, while Mark Isham contributes a generic score.

As virtually the last of the 1970s Movie Brats to tackle science fiction, Brian De Palma ventures into an outer space that is not just overly familiar but downright worn-out.
"Mission to Mars" achieves a handful of tense moments and eye-catching images in its depiction of a Mars rescue mission. But the overall feeling is unmistakably that of Deja Vu. De Palma must compete with characters and images and ideas ranging from "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" to "Dune", "2001" and the many "Star Trek" and "Alien" productions.
Featuring a solid ensemble cast but lacking any actor with true star power, "Mission to Mars" appears headed for a less-than-stellar boxoffice performance domestically. Overseas and ancillary prospects may be brighter.
The most damaging aspect to this movie about the rescue of a marooned astronaut on Mars is its startling lack of urgency. Granted, it takes six months to mount and accomplish such a mission. But De Palma creates little tension in any of the mechanics of this languid errand.
The film even gets going slowly as we are introduced to a group of NASA astronauts in the year 2020 (without any concessions to futuristic fads or clothing) who are about to blast into space for the Red Planet. The first mission to Mars is headed by Don Cheadle, who got the assignment when Gary Sinise refused psychological testing following the cancer death of his astronaut wife.
When Cheadle's crew gets wiped out in a baffling disaster on Mars, the last communication holds out the faint hope Cheadle may have survived the mysterious catastrophe. Getting a green light from the Mars program head (an unbilled performance by Armin Mueller-Stahl), a rescue mission takes off under the command of Tim Robbins that includes Sinise, Robbins' loving wife Connie Nielsen and all-around fix-it guy Jerry O'Connell.
En route, a meteor shower damages the recovery ship, which necessitates space-walking repairs. But the craft is more damaged than the crew realizes. So when they power up to enter Mars' atmosphere, the ship is destroyed.
This leads to the film's most suspenseful sequence, in which the four space-walking astronauts attempt to capture a small resupply module, their only hope to survive and land on Mars.
Robbins dies in the attempt, leaving the other three to encounter Cheadle's Martian Robinson Crusoe. The remaining astronauts then confront the "enemy," a Modigliani-like alien (evolved, apparently, from Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters" alien) when they enter a holographic planetarium. Here they learn the fate of Mars' ancient civilization and the impact its destruction had on the evolution of life on Earth.
This third act is the most likely to lose audiences. Not only does any conflict drain away from the story, but the "explanation" of mysterious event and the subsequent history of Mars feels more like a special on the Discovery Channel rather than the climax of a sci-fi movie. The old Mars ride at Disneyland delivered more thrills.
De Palma and his frequent collaborator, cinematographer Stephen H. Burum, furnish their usual highly fluid camera, offering strange angles and floating shots that show off the spiffy production design of Ed Verreaux's spaceships to good effect. The Mars surface and weather patterns are also nicely rendered in location shooting at Fraser Sand Dunes in British Columbia along with second-unit work in Jordan and the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.
But these landscapes are almost too realistic for the movie's good. They contain little of the mystery or wonder that is part and parcel of science fiction. The story and dialogue almost emphasize the everyday reality of space travel. Even in Robbins' death, De Palma seems more interested in what happens to the human body when exposed to the vacuum of space than the emotions of a wife seeing her husband die instantly before her eyes.
In the end, "Mission to Mars" feels like work rather than fun. Which may explain why the mystical climax works against the studied realism of the first two acts.
