The Walt Disney Company’s television division is shrinking its staff amid the ongoing reorganization, Variety has learned. Though the scope of the layoffs is unclear, no further rounds are expected after Thursday through the end of the calendar year.
This comes after the announcement earlier this week that Disney Television entertainment chief Dana Walden would consolidate the group’s programming and studio operations, which in turn follows efforts by Disney’s general entertainment content chairman Peter Rice last month to establish a new structure following the company’s decision to split off the content creation team from distribution and commercialization activities.
That all stems from the top — Disney CEO Bob Chapek made a sweeping restructuring announcement in October that created a new distribution and monetization arm under Kareem Daniel and emphasized the entertainment conglomerate’s focus on streamlining and amplifying its direct-to-consumer ambitions.

Exclusive: Another pilot has vanished into the Bermuda Triangle after ABC has opted not to proceed with sci-fi drama Triangle, starring The Brave’s Mike Vogel.
The pass by the Disney-owned broadcaster comes eight months after Triangle was ordered to pilot in January. A late international shoot in New Zealand and extensive post-production delayed the pickup decision until after the May upfronts.
“I want to wait and make a final decision when the editing of the show is completed and it has all special effects,” ABC programming chief Karey Burke told Deadline at TCA last month.
Written and executive produced by Jon Harmon Feldman and Sonny Postiglione (Knightfall), the show, from ABC Studios and Feldman and Jennifer Gwartz’s’s Random Hill posited the question: What if the Bermuda Triangle was not a watery grave in the middle of the ocean but a land lost in time that has...

Fox has canceled its troubled cop series “Lethal Weapon” after three seasons, Variety has learned.
The show originally starred Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans as a buddy cop duo, however, Variety reported that the pair were far from friendly and fought regularly off-camera, leading to Crawford’s sacking. Season three continued with Seann William Scott replacing Crawford, however, Wayans announced he was quitting and show, and coupled with a steep decline in ratings, it’s no great surprise that Fox decided to pull the plug.
The show averaged a 0.71 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and just over 3 million total viewers per episode in Season 3, which was a significant dip from the season 2 average rating of 1.0 and average viewership of just over 4 million. Even those numbers represented a pretty substantial decline from season 1, which had an average rating of 1.57 and 6.5 million total viewers.

Stifler’s about to get a “Lethal Weapon.” Fox has ordered a third season of the hit action drama after a last minute scramble to replace the lead role opposite Damon Wayans.
Seann William Scott (from the “American Pie” franchise) has joined the show in his first network series role as a new character who folds into a partnership with Murtaugh (Wayans).
“Seann is a fantastic addition to this already amazing cast,” said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn. “’Lethal Weapon’ is packed with action, drama and pure fun and we can’t wait to see Damon and Seann together on screen. Matt Miller, his incredible team and everyone at Warner Bros. have been tremendous partners, and we’re thrilled to bring this show back for another season.”
It almost didn’t happen. After clashes on set between star Clayne Crawford and Wayans, Crawford was fired — and the show was in jeopardy.

One of the most dramatic storylines this upfront season has come to an end, with American Pie alum Seann William Scott tapped to star opposite Damon Wayans on Fox’s Lethal Weapon. He replaces original co-lead Clayne Crawford, whose option for next season will not be picked up by producer Warner Bros. TV over on-set behavior issues.
With Wayans and Scott as new leading duo, Lethal Weapon has been renewed for a third season about 24 hours before Fox is slated to unveil its fall 2018 schedule to advertisers at its upfront presentation. There is no renewal decision yet on Wbtv’s remaining series at Fox, Gotham, which is still being considered for next season.

“Lethal Weapon” has been renewed for a third season at Fox, Variety has learned.
In addition, Seann William Scott will be joining the series following the firing of series co-lead Clayne Crawford. Crawford’s exit from the series came two weeks after it was revealed the former “Rectify” star had twice been reprimanded for his behavior on the “Lethal Weapon” set. In a statement posted on Instagram, Crawford provided details of two on-set incidents for which he was reprimanded, both related to concerns over working conditions.
“Warner Bros. Television has decided not to renew Clayne Crawford’s contract for ‘Lethal Weapon,'” Wbtv said in a statement Sunday. Sources say the studio would not bring the show back to Fox with Crawford attached following the on-set incidents.
The show had been considered a likely renewal, but the mad dash to replace Crawford just days before Fox’s upfront presentation left it in limbo.

Fox has picked up “Lethal Weapon” for a third season — without Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford).
Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment at Fox Broadcasting Company, announced the renewal Sunday, along with the reveal that Seann William Scott (“American Pie”) will be joining the cast next season as a new character who folds into a partnership with Roger Murtaugh (Damon Wayans).
A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Television added that the studio had “decided not to renew Clayne Crawford’s contract for ‘Lethal Weapon,'” following incidents of bad behavior on the Fox action drama’s set, for which he apologized. The announcement of Crawford’s ousting comes less than a week after news broke the studio was exploring recasting his part.

“Seann is a fantastic addition to this already amazing cast,” said Thorn. “‘Lethal Weapon’ is packed with action, drama and pure fun and we can’t wait to see Damon and Seann together on screen. Matt Miller, his incredible team and everyone at Warner Bros. have been tremendous partners, and we’re thrilled to bring this show back for another season.”
“Lethal Weapon” is based on the feature film franchise of the same name. The cast includes Wayans, Keesha Sharp, Kevin Rahm, Jordana Brewster, Johnathan Fernandez, Dante Brown, Chandler Kinney, Michelle Mitchenor and now Scott.
The gig marks Scott’s first network series regular role. He is best known for playing Steve Stifler in the “American Pie” movie franchise. His other film credits include “Road Trip,” “Role Models,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “The Rundown,” “Dude, Where’s My Car?,” “Goon 2: Last of the Enforcers” and “Just Before I Go.”

Jon Harmon Feldman and Jennifer Gwartz have sold two projects to Freeform via their Random Hill Productions banner, hourlong drama Lost Boys and Technicolor Girls based on Alice Berman’s upcoming book, and half-hour comedy Ex-Best based on the web series. We were right to fall head over heels for Lethal Weapon.
Snuggled in with Empire on Wednesday nights, it has been doing pretty well for itself in the ratings, but we can't give Empire all the credit.
The show is engaging, features exciting action sequences, one of the season's best bromances with Riggs and Murtaugh and one of our favorite new married couples on TV.
That's why we're not surprised at all that the freshman series was just given an additional five scripts, for a total of 18 episodes, what the network is calling a full season order.
“Lethal Weapon delivers an explosive and wildly entertaining core relationship between two cops, with dynamic performances by Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford, surrounded by cinematic action, endearing humor and true heart,” said Fox Entertainment president David Madden.
