Dolly Parton has collaborated with many musicians over the years, and she says she often gets along well with them. Some, like Reba McEntire, are lifelong friends and others, like Kenny Rogers, became the subject of tabloid fodder about her love life. One artist with whom Parton sang a duet on her 1976 variety show, Dolly, always had a place in her heart.
Dolly Parton said 1 musician had a hold on her heart
In 1976, Parton welcomed country musician Tom T. Hall on her variety show, Dolly. They each performed a handful of songs and sang duets on “Sneaky Snake” and “I Love.”

Charley Crockett showcased why he’s a must-see live performer when he made his late-night debut on Thursday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Texas singer-songwriter brought depth and swagger to his rendition of “I’m Just a Clown,” a standout single from his 2022 album The Man From Waco.
Backed by a small-but-mighty band, Crockett sang the funky tune about betrayal in his earthy baritone while he strummed an electric guitar. There wasn’t any wasted effort onstage: every band member played a crucial role, from the drummer and...

There is something uneasy in the full moon — some eeriness, some mystery. A monthly reminder of our infinitesimal nature, the full moon inspired the poems of Hesiod, ancient Ojibwe lunar calendars, and still today, compels amateur astrologists to charge their Amazon-bought healing crystals beneath the new-age moonlight. Now it’s moved Matthew Houck, the artful folk-rocker known as Phosphorescent, to launch the Full Moon Project, a song series wherein each month, upon the full moon (the word “month,” accordingly, has its etymological roots in the Old English word “mōna,” or...

Those who’ve attended a film festival know the infamous “arrrrrr” erupting from select corners of the audience whenever an anti-piracy disclaimer flashes onscreen. The sound is meant to evoke, of course, pirates, but it also reminds of the inherent community of the moviegoing experience — and it doesn’t just exist in the rarified space of a film festival.
The 11th annual Montclair Film Festival, running October 21-30 in the namesake town in New Jersey, has come up with a clever way to combat piracy while also targeting its very practitioners — in the form of a fake streaming website promising free rips of movies like “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” “The Whale,” “White Noise,” and “She Said.”
The website very much resembles one of those Angelfire-esque websites that, through its aggressive ad placement and the sheer number of links you have to click through, seems perilously close to crashing your computer.

Ralph Emery, a radio and TV host who became as famous in the country world as most of the stars he interviewed over the decades, died Saturday at Tristar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. He was 88. No immediate cause of death was given.
Emery’s renown as, alternately, “the Dick Clark of country music” or “the Johnny Carson of country” was significant enough to earn him a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007, in addition to the more expected plaudits befitting a top broadcaster in the industry, like his membership in the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame, an honor that came in 1989.

Tom T. Hall’s songwriting was as easygoing as his own demeanor. To listen to a Hall composition — whether he was the one singing it or artists like Jeannie C. Riley and Alan Jackson — was akin to hearing a story told by a friend you bumped into on the corner.
Tom T. Hall, Country Music’s ‘Storyteller,’ Dead at 85
While many of today’s country artists like to sing about the small-town existence, Hall brought it to life in vivid color. Sometimes it made your heart ache, other times it made you smile.

Charley Crockett’s journey through country’s past on his album Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza continues with his forlorn rendition of “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” the 1969 song written by Country Music Hall of Famer Tom T. In addition to the competitive awards, Tilda Swinton, director Bennett Miller, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos will be honored with tributes. 24 films received nominations this year, not including a special award handed bestowed to Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, and Channing Tatum for their ensemble work in “Foxcatcher.” Voting for the primary awards begins on Nov. 19th at 12:01 Am Est and concludes on November 26th at 5:00 Pm Est. “Each year the Gotham...

Miranda Lambert has what Mary Tyler Moore’s boss, Lou Grant, would call “spunk.” She’s feisty, she doesn’t mince words, and she gives as good, if not better, than she gets. On album after album, she shows that beneath that toasty exterior is a heart that is very capable of being broken. The overloaded "Platinum"— there are 16 tracks on the standard edition— is stylistically Lambert’s most diverse (and that's saying a lot given some of the adventurous turns she took on 2011's "Four The Record") : She veers into western swing on the chugging, plucky cover of Tom T. Hall’s “All That’s Left” (featuring the fantastic Time Jumpers), spoken-word blended with ‘60s psychedelia on “Red Wagon,” and rock on the thumping “Something Bad,” featuring Carrie Underwood (which comes off far better on the recorded version than the song’s live debut at the Billboard Music...

Introducing Slant's package of reviews, Ed Gonzalez argues that Tribeca "has blossomed from a celebration of the Big Apple as a filmmaking center into a great facilitator and promoter of international film and video culture." The Los Angeles Times' Steven Zeitchik agrees that it's "a prime venue to discover international films." More packages and lists: Smithsonian Magazine's Daniel Eagan ("What to See"), indieWIRE ("12 New Films We're Excited For"), Filmmaker's Scott Macaulay ("25 Films I'm Looking Forward To"), Movies.com ("20 Most Anticipated Movies"), Time's Lily Rothman ("Top 15 Chatter-Worthy Films"), Time Out New York and Twitch ("Top 15 Picks").

New Directors/New Films offers New Yorkers a busy weekend, introducing five features on Saturday and filling Sunday with repeat screenings of several of the first week's offerings. Tomorrow begins in the early afternoon with a program of seven shorts, opening with Clarissa Knoll's Street Vendor Cinema, featuring "energetic auteur practicing his art — and trying to hustle a little cash — in a busy São Paulo shopping area." Ao Scott in the New York Times: "Equipped with a small digital camera, a few crude costumes and a scroll of ready-made backdrops, he invites passers-by to spend a little bit of money to produce and star in their own movies. The results are an exuberant hodgepodge of genres, including an action thriller, a samurai fantasy epic and an astonishing melodrama of race, passion and family honor set on a 19th-century plantation."

The heavy awards onslaught is gearing up and it is a good year to be Fox Searchlight. The 21st Gotham Independent Film Award Nominations have been announced and two of the studio’s films happen to lead the pack. Alexander Payne‘s The Descendants picked up nominations for Best Feature, Best Ensemble Performance and Best Breakthrough Actor. Their Sundance hit (and one of my personal favorites of the year) Martha Marcy May Marlene picked up Ensemble, Breakthrough Actor and Breakthrough Director for Sean Durkin.
That latter award is a great pack including Mike Cahill for Another Earth, Vera Farmiga for Higher Ground, Evan Glodell for Bellflower and Dee Rees for Pariah. It is also great to see my frontrunner for #1 film of 2011, Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life get a Best Feature nomination. Check out the noms below via indieWIRE.

Unlike most bands’ vault-clearing collections, Drive-By Truckers’ The Fine Print contains rarities that are truly rare: They’ve never been released in any form before, outside of live bootlegs. In addition to a handful of self-defining covers—Tom Petty’s “Rebels,” Warren Zevon’s “Play It All Night Long,” Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone,” and Tom T. Hall’s “Mama Bake A Pie”—Drive-By Truckers have patched up some unfinished and/or abandoned songs from the past half-decade. But this isn’t also-ran material: The Fine Print opens with Patterson Hood’s roaring, cautionary “George Jones Talkin’ Cell ...
