- (October 1961) Stage: "Kicks and Co." Hansberry takes over direction of this stage musical from Vinnette Carroll shortly before it opens at the Arie Crown Theatre in Chicago on October 11, 1961. The songs by Oscar Brown Jr. get good reviews but the show as a whole receives mixed-to-bad reviews from mainstream theatre critics, although audience response is much more positive according to stories in the black press. The plays stars Burgess Meredith, Lon Satton, Vi Velasco, Nichelle Nichols, Al Freeman Jr., William Dwyer and Lynne Forrester. The show closes after 5 previews and 4 performances and never makes it to Broadway.

- (June 1959) NBC proposes a series of 90 minute TV specials commemorating the centennial of the U.S. Civil War, to be produced by Dore Schary, written by the leading dramatists of the day. Schary was pleased with Hansberry's work and had a commitment from Henry Fonda to star in the show. NBC executives asked Schary what Hansberry's position on slavery was and Schary realized that the project was doomed.
