The need and desire to see Black, Brown, Asian and Indigenous people on screen has yet to be completely fulfilled by Hollywood, but there has been a recent uptick in Aapi and Bipoc representation on screen. According to a 2021 Nielsen study titled “Being Seen on Screen,” data from the 2021 to 2021 television season showed 78 of the top 1,500 shows had some racial, ethnic or sexual orientation diversity.

We're cruising through Season 2 of Quinta Brunson's "Abbott Elementary" -- one of the funniest and most moving workplace sitcoms. My goodness! The Emmy-award-winning series has continued to be on a hot streak throughout this latest season with excellently calculated comedic chaos. In season 2, the underpaid and overworked teachers are back, and their plight to educate the children of this Philadelphia school district makes for some of the best television in 2022.
As an avid fan of "Abbott Elementary," I can't help but find unbridled joy in every quirky character interaction. However, I do have my favorites. There have been many tribulations at Philidelphia's Abbott Elementary school -- ranging from the "desking" incident to the destruction of every toilet on the premises. Through it all, I have gotten to familiarize myself with the eclectic cast of characters, and I'm just itching to see how they stack up against each other. Take a seat,...

ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” made the grade with Emmy voters this year, with the freshman comedy about a Philadelphia elementary school scoring seven Emmy nominations, including Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress and Best Comedy Writing for the show’s star and creator, Quinta Brunson. However, there can be little argument that the show’s breakout character was Ava Coleman, the outrageous and outrageously inept principal played by Janelle James.
James’s work has earned her a nomination for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, her first Emmy bid. She is nominated alongside her “Abbott Elementary” co-star Sheryl Lee Ralph, “Ted Lasso” actors Hannah Waddingham (last year’s winner), Juno Temple and Sarah Niles, Hannah Einbinder of “Hacks,” and previous winners Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”).

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Janelle James is entering the “Abbott Elementary” episode “Ava vs. Superintendent” as her 2022 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. The episode aired on April 5 and is the 12th episode of the first season of the ABC sitcom.
In this installment, Ava (James) must present before the school board by herself to secure funding for the following school year. She makes a sincere, passionate presentation, but Superintendent Collins (Reggie Hayes) is still bitter about having been blackmailed by her years prior.

Girlfriends made its Upn premiere in 2000 and two decades and a pandemic later, the comedy series from Mara Brock Akil still holds up. Akil, Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White, Jill Marie Jones and Reginald C. Hayes came together at PaleyFest New York to celebrate Girlfriends’ 20th anniversary and reflect on how Hollywood still has work to do.
“We are celebrated and I am joyful about the celebration, but I am not remised about the continued fight and how hard it is to occupy these spaces at the levels in which we are and continue to be in,” Akil said during the virtual conversation.
During the conversation, the Girlfriends cast and creator marveled at how the show’s Netflix pickup in July has caused a renaissance of discourse about the series’ group of friends and their relationships. With the streaming giant, Girlfriends joined “the democracy of television” and reached new generations of Black women,...
