David Earl and Chris Haywood’s story of an inventor’s relationship with his creation blends Caractacus Potts with Victor Frankenstein to heartwarming effect
Happiness, loneliness and silliness come together in this startling emotional adventure developed by writer-performers David Earl and Chris Hayward from their 2017 short film of the same name, and directed by Jim Archer. The film is partly about an AI robot called Charles. But thankfully, unlike a lot of serious sci-fi, this film doesn’t demand that we wonder whether or not AI robots are capable of independent thought or if you can fall in love with them, etc, etc. Charles, a free-thinking robot, is burdened with many things, but an ontological crisis isn’t one of them.
Earl himself plays Brian, a nerdy middle-aged bloke living alone in a Welsh cottage that he has all too clearly inherited from his late parents. He talks directly to a figure behind the camera,...

Starring alongside Kay and Ellis are Martin Sacks, Genevieve Lemon, Chris Haywood, Rob Carlton, Baroo, Sam Parsonson, Bryan Roberts and Jeremy Waters.
The screenplay, which was written by Marc Furmie (Terminus) and Eddie Baroo, is based on an original story by McMillan.

"You've got your life, I've got mine." Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled a new Us official trailer for the emotional romantic drama Dirt Music from Australia, the latest film from filmmaker Gregor Jordan. It's scheduled for Us release on VOD in July. Adapted from the novel by Tim Winton, the stunning landscape of Western Australia is the backdrop for an impassioned tale of love and grief. She goes off on a journey of self-discovery and meets a former musician named Lu Fox, played by Garret Hedlund. This also stars David Wenham, Aaron Pedersen, Dan Wyllie, Chris Haywood, and Ava Caryofyllis. Once cinemas reopen, Universal Pictures intends to give Dirt Music a wide release – something director Gregor Jordan is thankful for.
Shot in Western Australia and based on Tim Winton’s Miles Franklin-winning novel, the film made its world at the Toronto International Film Festival last September.
It stars Kelly Macdonald as Georgie, a sometime sailor, diver and nurse who is stranded in a remote fishing town with Jim (David Wenham), a man she doesn’t love, and his young sons whose dead mother she can never replace. A reckless moment leads Georgie to an intense, sexually charged affair with Lu Fox (Garrett Hedlund), an enigmatic loner, musician and poacher who is traumatised by a tragic accident from his past.

Kaarin Fairfax and Chris Haywood in ‘Skewwhiff.’
Chris Haywood is so committed to making a thriller based on the Australian novel The Crossing he has agreed to produce as well as star in the feature film.
First-time feature director James Khehtie sent the novel by B. Michael Radburn to the actor, who loved the premise: Taylor Bridges flees from Victoria to an isolated Tasmanian town to work as a park ranger after his daughter disappeared, triggering the breakdown of his marriage.
When a young girl who was the same age as his daughter vanishes, Bridges, a chronic sleepwalker, begins to wonder what happens when he sleepwalks.
“I did not want to produce but James insisted,” Haywood tells If, recalling that he has served as a producer only once before, on writer-director Peter Watkins’ 1991 feature doc The Media Project, which critiqued Australian media coverage of the first Gulf war.

Aaron Pedersen as Jay Swan.
While many actors may fret or obsess about where their next role is coming from, Aaron Pedersen has a simple, unfussed approach.
“I take the despair out by believing you get the jobs you deserve to get,” he says after receiving his second Aacta nomination – best lead actor in a TV drama for Mystery Road.
“Your career is about longevity. I am forever grateful for being able to do the things I want to do.”
It’s a philosophy which has sustained the 48-year-old through a career spanning 25 years. It’s his second nomination following a nod for best lead actor in The Circuit in 2010.
Bunya Productions’ Mystery Road is vying for the best drama prize with Easy Tiger Productions’ Jack Irish, Jungle Entertainment/Blue –Tongue Films’ Mr Inbetween, Easy Tiger’s Rake and FremantleMedia’s Wentworth.

Are you really named Christopher after horror icon Christopher Lee?
Sure am, my mum loved him as an actor and I guess I scored his name.
Your past horrors – Daddy’S Little Girl, Come And Get Me, Charlie’S Farm – were all R rated and came with some controversy. Is that why Boar is just gory creature feature fun?
When I first wrote Boar I wanted it to be R Rated as well, really violent kills and gore like my past films, people seemed to really love the kills in Charlie’s Farm and the Torture in Daddy’s Little Girl. I wanted the fans to get that same feeling and enjoyment from the bloodshed in Boar. I wrote Boar to be funny when it had to be funny and serious when it had to be serious. "There's nothing out there except dust and ruins..." Watch out for angry wild boars! Australia has given us many various wild and crazy creature features, and we have yet another one on the release line-up for 2018. The cast of Boar includes John Jarratt, Simone Buchanan, Bill Moseley, Melissa Tkautz, Nathan Jones, Roger Ward, Hugh Sheridan, Ernie Dingo, Chris Haywood, Ricci Guarnaccio, Emily Williams, and Steve Bisley. Thirty-five years have passed since the massacre of eight people on the fishing boat Investor first shocked the nation. For those whose lives were upended by the killings, the case remains a painful cloud that refuses to lift.
For John Peel, the former deckhand who police and prosecutors suspected of committing the grisly slayings, the mystery is something else: a question mark that still hangs over his head.
Peel was charged with the killings in 1984, but after two expensive, headline-grabbing trials, he was found not guilty. Decades later, the case is Alaska’s worst unsolved mass homicide.

It has been nearly a year since 36 people were killed in a deadly blaze in an Oakland, California, warehouse, which was home to local artists. Now, the city is honoring the victims with a special tribute.

Glenn Close says that Christopher Reeve and Robin Williams' friendship was so strong that she believes if the Superman star was still alive, he could have saved Williams.
The 70-year-old actress got emotional while delivering a touching speech at the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation's annual "A Magical Evening" Gala in New York City on Thursday, where she reflected on the late actors and her friendship with them both.
"My first connection to Christopher Reeve was through Robin Williams, when we were shooting The World According to Garp. It was the summer of 1982, when we were filming on Fishers Island," Close began. "On Friday evenings, Chris would literally swoop in, piloting his own plane, scoop Robin up, and away they would fly for the weekend. On Sunday, late afternoon, Chris would swoop back in and deliver Robin back -- I have to say a little worse for wear."

The day The New York Times broke the Harvey Weinstein story, I found myself choking back bile all day.
In the weeks since, it has become resoundingly clear that Weinstein is a virulent serial predator, and has earned whatever hell rains down on him. But Harvey Weinstein isn’t the problem, and bringing him down — while satisfying, necessary, and just — will be far from sufficient if we don’t simultaneously tear down our rotten corporate culture and reckon with our own complicity in propping it up.
As democracy derives its consent from the governed, tyranny derives its consent from the tyrannized. And while it’s long overdue, I no longer consent to being tyrannized.
I wasn’t sexually harassed by Harvey Weinstein. I worked with him briefly, consulting on “sex, lies, and videotape,” the film that changed the independent film business, Sundance, and Harvey forever; the film whose prescient title...

Lynn Shelton is the rare American filmmaker to oscillate between contemplative dramas (“We Go Way Back,” “Touchy Feely”) and playful situational comedies (“Humpday,” “Your Sister’s Sister”). As such, her filmmaking voice — discounting the prolific TV direction of the last few years — extends across multiple genres and doesn’t really fit into any of them.

Her latest, “Outside In” is another somber, low-key drama, but its premise could just as easily work as cringe comedy. Both modes operate in service of minimalist character studies about people desperate for companionship, who hover on the verge of bad decisions in their attempts to set things right. Shelton’s work is understated, but elevates seemingly forgettable scenarios with a wise, humane approach that makes even a lesser work like “Outside In” a cut above the market standard.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts reveals what advice Phil Lord and Chris Miller had for Kong: Skull Island, and how they took that into Han Solo.

Amongst staggering aural and visual assault, perhaps one of the quietest aspects of Dunkirk (2017, directed by Christopher Nolan) are its costumes – and this is to its credit. Dunkirk is the type of film that requires you to engage quickly with everything you see on screen. Jeffrey Kurland’s costume design is masterful in this regard. A sea of subtly differentiated green and brown with the pop of naval uniforms and briefly glimpsed civilian wear. This is 1940 at its most spare and rudimentary.
Here, Jeffrey Kurland chats exclusively to Clothes on Film about his process for creating the world of Dunkirk:
Spoilers Throughout
Clothes on Film: How did you go about researching the many uniforms seen in the film?
Jeffrey Kurland: As I normally would do. In the beginning it’s kind of a one man job. I trawl the internet, I go to libraries – I actually have my own library I use.

Chris here. Depending on which report you believe, Justice League has been in nearly constant state of filming since production initially wrapped. But the latest bit of news out of a new batch of reshoots has the superhero tentpole going too far - Justice League will digitally erase Henry Cavill's mustache.
Think of all the possibilities that we are being denied with this false CGI smoothness aside from a change of pace for the squeaky clean hero! Evil Superman, Euro-Superman, Tom-Selleck-Tribute-Superman. Jokes aside it is an odd sort of digital trickery and another level to the ongoing saga of this tentpole's preproduction. (But reminder: the goal of all reshoots is to make a movie better!)
This is also an interesting tidbit to emerge considering that Warner Bros. has been dancing around admitting that Superman will return from the dead in some form (that new poster out of Comic Con...

Well that went fast. We have reached the final issue of the first story arc somehow. If I have any criticism at all, and I have enjoyed this series far too much to do more than slightly nit-pick, it is that Chris King has packed in perhaps too much too soon. He clearly has a ton of great ideas that are just spilling out, and maybe a more slow and steady approach may have paid off more down the line. But that’s a talk between Chris and his editor methinks. I’ve enjoyed it all plenty, thank you very much, just don’t run out of ideas any time soon.
A recap of what’s gone before would just take too long, so here’s the quick version. Way back in Ancient Egypt Belial was in love with Amunet,...
