So we have Arrival’s captain Denis Villeneuve at the helm of the all-new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, what Legendary Pictures needed next was a grade A screenwriter to join the ranks and that is where Forrest Gump writer, Eric Roth, comes into the fold to pen the new version.
This isn’t the first time Frank Herbert’s Dune has been attempted on the big screen; in fact, there have been many attempts and failures to get them off the ground. As far back as in 1971 Ridley Scott attempted and failed to bring the story to life, it wasn’t until 1984 when Mulholland Drive Director, David Lynch attached himself to the film it finally got off the ground with the likes of Kyle MacLachlan, who Lynch later went on to work with on Twin Peaks, and Patrick Stewart taking on roles. Last November, Legendary Entertainment acquired movie and TV rights to Frank Herbert's Dune. Then, in December, it was revealed that Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve was being eyed to helm a new Dune movie, and now the screenwriter for the project has been revealed.
Variety reports that Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Postman, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) is set to pen the adaptation of the seminal 1965 sci-fi novel, which was the first in a series of books. Although Villeneuve was previously "in talks" to helm the Dune movie, Variety and THR mention that Villeneuve is taking on the new take on Herbert's ambitious story.
Villeneuve is also set to produce the new Dune movie with Mary Parent and Cale Boyter. Executive producers will include Thomas Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert, with sci-fi author Kevin J. Anderson on board as a creative consultant.

Author Brian Herbert, son of "Dune" author Frank Herbert and writer of "Dune" stories since the passing of his father, has confirmed that Denis Villeneuve ("Blade Runner 2049") will direct a new "Dune" big screen feature:

You might recall that late last year, Legendary Entertainment picked up the rights to "Dune" from the Herbert family. At the time, it wasn't clear whether Legendary would be looking to adapt the material as a movie or a television series though we speculated that Chinese investors would likely be looking to get their hands on some sort of big franchise and "Dune" seemed to be the perfect opportunity for that.

The rumors are true: “Arrival” and “Sicario” director Denis Villeneuve will direct Legendary Pictures’ adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, “Dune,” often touted as the best-selling science fiction novel in history. The news was confirmed in the wee hours of Wednesday morning in a tweet by Brian Herbert, son of Frank. The Oscar-nominated director’s name had been floating around the project since last December.

The “Dune” franchise has seen its fair share of storied film adaptations. The first time a filmmaker attempted a “Dune” adaptation was in 1973, when eccentric Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky notoriously spent $2 million in pre-production on the 14-hour project. None other than Salavador Dalí and Orson Welles were attached, with music by Pink Floyd, but the film never came to fruition.

And then things got serious. A few months back came the news that Legendary Pictures was developing a new movie based on Frank Herbert’s novel, Dune. The book has been filmed before, of course, with David Lynch’s 1984 feature savaged on its original release. But now we learn that the new version is definitely pressing ahead, and that it’s landed its director.

In the wake of Ben Affleck's decision to step down as director of The Batman, a number of names started to make the rounds with regard to who might replace him. One of the names on that list was Denis Villeneuve, the man who gave us Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and will bring us Blade Runner 2049 later this year. In recent months, though, Villeneuve was also rumored to be up for another big project: A reboot of Dune.

With Arrival and the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 under his belt, Denis Villeneuve is one of the go-to sci-fi filmmakers right now, and his résumé could only get more impressive now that he's being eyed to helm the new Dune movie for Legendary Entertainment.

The epic novel was previously adapted for the big screen by David Lynch in 1984, and it also came to life on the small screen in the 2000 miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune and its follow-up miniseries, Frank Herbert's Children of Dune.

Thomas Tull has struck a deal with the Frank Herbert estate for motion picture rights to the late author’s celebrated novels.
Dalian Wanda-owned Legendary will develop and produce possible film or TV projects for the global market.
Tull (pictured), vice-chairman of worldwide production Mary Parent and Cale Boyter will produce for Legendary alongside Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert as executive producers.
Dune was turned into a 1984 film by Dino De Laurentiis Company that David Lynch directed.
It starred Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides, the scion to a desert planet dynasty who leads a rebellion to return the planet under his family’s control.
The property also received the miniseries treatment and a three-part adaptation starring William Hurt aired on The Sci-Fi Channel in 2000.
Mike Ross and Jen Grazier negotiated the deal on behalf of Legendary with Marcy Morris and Barry Tyerman of Jtwammk on behalf of the Herbert family.

In this case, that someone is Legendary Entertainment, who are no stranger to genre franchises. There are no real details to report at the moment other than the fact that Legendary has "the film and television motion picture rights" to the Dune saga, but that's big enough news in itself. Paramount previously had the rights and had been attempting to make a new Dune movie since 2008, at one point announcing Deepwater Horizon's Peter Berg as director.
I'd like to focus on one word from the press release that's been sent out: television.

Legendary Pictures has just picked up the film and TV rights to Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel Dune. A new version of this film has been in and out of development for years, and with Legendary Pictures taking over the rights, it's sure to finally happen.

One of the most iconic and beloved science fiction stories around, Dune, is getting a new shot at the big screen, and potentially TV thanks to Legendary Pictures.
I read Frank Herbert's Dune for the first time while I was in the sixth grade, and it completely altered my views on sci-fi in general. More than just about any other work of fiction (yes, I'm including Star Wars), Dune is what drove me to be creative and pursue writing. It's a series I've come back to time and time again (I just finished my umpteenth re-read last month), and it seems perfectly suited for the big screen.
Despite some attempts, Dune hasn't seen the same blockbuster success outside of the book realm that it so rightly deserves. Hopefully, Legendary Pictures can change that. They announced today they've purchased the rights to Frank Herbert's series, with plans for a movie and even a TV series.

Deadline is reporting that Legendary has acquired the film and TV rights to Frank Herbert's Dune, which of course means there's a very good chance the studio is planning a new adaptation of the sci-fi classic at some point in the future. There's no mention of what those plans might entail, just that "any project will be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers." There have been several different adaptions of Dune, the most famous (or infamous depending on your perspective) is David Lynch's ambitious but flawed 1984 movie starring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Kyle MacLachlan. We'll update once we know more, but for now be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

The producer, whose credits include Flight Of The Navigator and In Love And War, has optioned the 1972 novel from the Frank Herbert estate.
The story charts the abuse of Native Americans and an activist’s attempt to even the score by kidnapping the son of a Washington politician.
“The book is an extraordinary example of Frank Herbert’s brilliant writing and it is something I’ve always wanted to turn into a film,” said Villard (pictured). “I remember the rights being unavailable when I first pursued the Soul Catcher project in the 80s, but as my producing career developed I never forgot the powerful effect the story had on me.
“Now, with full support from the Frank Herbert Estate, we have the opportunity to make a culturally impactful film that combines elements of suspense, high drama, mysticism and Native American history that will resonate for years to come and appeal to the millions of Frank Herbert fans worldwide...
