This review may contain spoilers. The previews for the episode didn't make it look that interesting. It actually seemed ridiculous based on these previews. Few shows - especially genre shows - can have a Nazi-related plot without it coming off as just plain bad. 'Fringe' proved itself to be one of the lucky few with "The Bishop Revival." In fact, at the risk of sounding mildly offensive, it's kind of sad to see the "Nazi stuff" go. Especially since it brought us one of the best villains of the season (and possibly, the series), Alfred Hoffman. So of course he only lasted one episode. But enough about Hoffman; this episode was about -- not all that surprisingly -- the Bishops. Young Peter (Joshua Jackson), Father Walter (John Nobel) and Grandfather Robert. As it turns out, Robert ...

The episode opens at a Jewish wedding. All the guests are seated and waiting for the ceremony to start. A mysterious young man wearing glasses is standing in the back like a creep, and nobody seems to know who he is. In another room, the groom, David, is trouble breathing. His friends think he is having a panic attack because he is nervous about getting married. In the main room, David's grandmother stands up and starts walking towards the bespectacled creep crying out, "It's him!" Then she starts choking and falls to the ground. The same thing starts happening to several of the other guests–their faces are turning blue from lack of breath. The creep turns around and calmly walks away.
Olivia, Peter, and Walter arrive on the scene. Walter is reminiscing about his own wedding day and offers to let Peter borrow his purple tuxedo when he gets married.

I'll admit it; looking at the previews for this episode, I was rather disappointed. It looked to be one of the less engrossing episodes of the season, along with "Johari Window," and "Dream Logic." Good, but not supergood on the level of last week's "What Lies Below."
I was wrong.
"The Bishop Revival" was an example of just how good Fringe can be. The episode greatly expanded the characters of Walter and Peter, while crafting a brilliant case featuring a selective toxin that could kill people with certain genetic traits (but no one else). But the best part about this episode is not only the well-structured and interesting mystery, but the fact that it managed to produce another, better mystery that was left unsolved.
The episode concerned the aforementioned virus, which was soon revealed to have been created by Walter's own father, Robert Bishoff (he changed his surname upon emigrating from Berlin to the U.
