I'm not up on my steampunk web series just now, but there's one --- The League of S.T.E.A.M. --- that's been entertaining viewers for three seasons. They've got a healthy YouTube following, but I've never seen any of their adventures until director Paul Hough (The Human Race) sent one my way. The film just played Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival with screenings to come at Sci-Fi-London, Haapsalu Horror & Fantasy Film Festival, Crypticon Seattle Horror Film Festival, and Phoenix Comicon Film Festival. Entitled The Invitation To Armageddon, Hough's episode is a comedic musical that delivers a very special invite to The League of S.T.E.A.M. Mr. Lucien Morningstar, aka the Devil himself, is played with a deliciously droll panache by Carlos Larkin. I'd watch this character in his own...

Director Paul Hough's The Human Race will be available on VOD, iTunes, and in theaters on Friday, June 13. Recently Hough had a chat with fellow director (and actor in The Human Race) Richard Gale (The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon) about his new movie.
We got a chance to eavesdrop on the Q&A between Hough and Gale so that you can dig the conversation between these two top-notch filmmakers below.
Richard Gale: Up until I met Paul Hough, I had never killed anyone before, in a movie or otherwise. I'm first and foremost a filmmaker - I made the horror comedy short The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon, which went viral on YouTube and is currently being developed into a feature film.
Paul Hough: I met Richard on the festival circuit when my film The Angel played at festivals with his amazing short Criticized.

Watching The Human Race, one gets the impression that first-time feature filmmaker Paul Hough read Stephen King/Richard Bachman’s "The Long Walk" and thought it would be cool if a movie had people running instead of walking. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as if Hough put much thought into it beyond that. His film is an odd, incoherent, and hollow mess. Clearly, he was working with a nonexistent budget, but that’s no excuse.

With director Bryan Coyne’s feature Utero having wrapped after thirteen days of principal photography in Los Angeles, we caught up with star and producer Jessica Cameron to get the skinny on the flick, and to bring you some exclusive photos.
Cameron, who recently starred in and directed the feature Truth or Dare, said of what attracted her to the project (which stars her as an agoraphobic unwed mother who finds her psyche unraveling as she becomes convinced that her unborn child is more monster than human), “I have been friends with Bryan for a while now, and we have talked many times about collaborating on a project. When Utero came up I just had to do it. I simply fell in love with the character Lauren that he created and wanted to explore her universe.

Earlier this year we told you about Hidden Horror, a new book that celebrates 101 of the most overlooked and underrated films in the history of horror cinema. The book is currently available through Amazon, as well as select brick and mortar retailers, and it's proven to be quite the success in the horror community, introducing many fans to gems that they've either never heard of, or were simply never urged to seek out.
As a celebration of the success of the book, a special signing event is being held this Saturday at Burbank, California's horror shop Dark Delicacies, with several of the authors stopping by to sign copies and discuss the book. On hand will be Fearnet's editor-in-chief Lawrence Raffel, who wrote an essay in Hidden Horror on 1979's Fascination, as well as fellow contributors Nate Yapp, Paul Hough, Michael Klug and Molly Celaschi.

10. They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?
Directed by Sydney Pollack
Written by James Poe and Robert E. Thompson
USA, 1969
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? is a wildly acclaimed 1969 American drama directed by Sydney Pollack that went on to receive nine Academy Award nominations. Like most of the films to appear on this list, it is based on a novel, a 1935 tome by Horace McCoy. Penned by James Poe and Robert E. Thompson, the film is an allegorical drama set amongst the contestants in a marathon dance contest during the Great Depression.
So how does a movie revolving around a dance competition relate to The Hunger Games? Much like The Hunger Games, the participants (all teens) are broken down into couples in hopes of winning and taking home the prize money, cash that’s much needed during such hard economic times. There is even a sleazy opportunistic Mc who urges...

This title was recently shown at Cannes earlier this month (May 2013) and the film has been picked up for release in multiply territories. XLRator Media will handle distribution in the United States, beginning this Summer. To expand on the story, 80 people are abducted from all corners of life. The homeless, war veterans and mothers are then forced to run in a deadly race. If a competitor is lapped by someone else, then they are killed. Also, if a runner goes out of bounds, then they are eliminated. There can be only one winner! The film's official trailer is below. The clip expands on the story even more as the character Eddie (Eddie McGee) tries to get the runners to work together against their oppressor. Release Date: August 4th,...

Paul Hough's The Human Race depicts a brutal, inventive competition that turns even the most compassionate and kind-hearted members of society into ruthless killers, bloody, exploded messes or, in some cases, both. As usual with this particular genre of action film, there is a hero among them, but, in an inventive twist, this time the resident badass is a man on crutches with only one leg. He's played by Eddie McGee, a talented actor who is actually one-legged in real life, and who previously proved his action star credentials in the short film The Angel, also directed by Hough. The story is pretty simple. Thirty or so people black out and find themselves in a bizarre environment where a voice in their head tells them...

The Human Race
Written and Directed by Paul Hough
USA 2012 imdb Fantasia
The Human Race is a grindhouse drive-in classic that happens to have been made years after the drive-in heyday; at least it follows the maxim of legendary drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs, “the first rule of great drive-in movie-making: Anyone can die at any moment.”
The set-up of The Human Race is that everyone on one city block, 80 souls in total, are snatched from their lives by a white light, dropped into a strange obstacle course and told, “The school, the house and the prison are safe. Follow the arrows or you will die. Stay on the path or you will die. If you are lapped twice, you will die. Do not touch the grass or you will die. Race or die.”
And naturally, there can only be one winner. To paraphrase Glengarry Glen Ross, “Anybody want to see second prize?...

It’s like “The Hunger Games”, minus the plucky female lead. Or is it? The teaser trailer for director Paul Hough’s “The Human Race” doesn’t exactly give away much, including who the lead is, but according to the synopsis below, it’s a lass name “Veronica”, played by one Brianna Lauren Jackson. It also reminds me a bit of “The Running Man”, too. No, not the movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the original short story by Stephen King. That was a pretty vicious little story, much more than the silly action movie that resulted from it. In any case, check out the teaser trailer for Hough’s “The Human Race”. Talk about running for your life. Ahem. Veronica suddenly finds herself in a surreal and horrifying race. The rules are simple: If you are lapped twice, you die. If you step off the path, you die. Many will...

Ricky D, Michael Ryan and Edgar Chaput are quite familiar with the Fantasia Film Festival, having attended the event for years (some of us since the very beginning); so we thought it would be wise to list our favorite films from the 2012 line up. Enjoy!
Edgar Chaput’s Top 3
3-Game of Werewolves (2012, Juan Martinez Moreno)
A review for this film has already has already been published (link here), but the short version is that director Martinez Moreno and his stellar cast deliver one of the most engaging, hysterical, action packed and wonderfully shot werewolf movies in years. Not this Wolf has a film involving these nightmarish hunters been so entertaining. Its greatest flaw is the script, which makes some bizarre decisions as to character motivations, yet any qualms about why certain people are doing what are squashed by the joy out of seeing Moreno’s interpretation of the universe of lycanthropy…...

It is that time of year again. Mid-to-late July means two things if one is a film fan either living or visiting the city of Montréal. The blockbuster season is in full swing, although that can be applied to just about any city in the universe, and the Fantasia film festival is mere days away. Ryan, Justine, Ricky and myself are counting down the hours and counting down our most anticipated films as well. There may be some overlap in our lists, but it feels safe to say that said lists also speak to our individual tastes as film fans. In also speaks to the diversity of the Fantasia film festival, just in case there were still a few people believing it was a mere freak show of the weirdest films ever conceived. There will be some freak shows, that much is certain, but Fantasia also offers a little bit for everybody.

The Fantasia Film Festival held their press conference today to unveil their 2012 line-up and honestly we are still processing the information dump. Mitch Davis said during the press conference that the only way to properly describe the festival would be “to tie you to chairs, force feed you caffeine and sugar and talk to you for 17 days.” As usual, Mitch is simultaneously completely insane and completely accurate.
Last year, we published over 100 reviews/articles about/from Fantasia and recorded six podcasts. We intend to at least equal those numbers this year. Expect articles about our most anticipated films from several of us in the next few days, once we have time to study the 2012 Fantasia program book. (At 396 pages, you could use the damn thing to do wrist curls and I think that it has already been declared a Weapon of Mass Destruction by bugs everywhere.)
