Wrote the words to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", using the melody of the song "John Brown's Body Lies A-mouldering in the Grave." Published 1862.
She was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters (in 1907).
Inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1998.
Abolitionist, writer, suffragette, and peace activist.
Pictured on a 14¢ US definitive postage stamp in the Great Americans series, issued 12 February 1987.
She created, in 1891, the American Friends of Russian Freedom, and serving as president, in 1894, of the United Friends of Armenia.
She founded, with Lucy Stone and others, the New England Women's Club, (which later became the American Woman Suffrage Association).
Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
