"Comparison is the thief of joy," I read once on a cross-stitch, and it's probably true, but when it comes to our favorite TV shows, comparison is also very fun. Which of the year's biggest shows were worth the hype? What hidden gems slipped between the streaming cracks? And – crucially for a medium that's defined by its ability to tell bite-sized, serialized stories – which show aired the best episode of 2023?
There is, of course, no objective answer to this question, but it's worth exploring. In 2023, TV worked overtime to get our attention, packing episodes with A-list guest stars, yanking forcefully on viewers' heartstrings, and pushing past its own established boundaries with sharp and captivating filmmaking choices. Not everything TV tried this year worked, but a surprising amount of it did.
A trio of incredible episodes top this year's list, hours that stand out among their contemporaries and embolden their respective genres.

The term “milking” is used to describe the exploitation of a certain thing to a shameless level. I prefer not to use the word when I’m writing an article about something, but Apple TV’s Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas has compelled me to do so. I am not a huge fan of Ted Lasso. For my personal taste, the megahit Apple TV show mostly comes off as saccharine-sweet. But the impact it has created on pop culture is undeniable. Naturally, from Apple TV’s perspective, milking something as celebrated as Ted Lasso makes sense in terms of business. But why not make a proper Christmas special instead of the staged extravaganza that Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas is? I mean, when you have the entire cast of Ted Lasso at your service, then why not make them play the parts they’re known for?
Instead of that,...

In fact, Lowney revealed that he has ideas for four potential “Ted Lasso” spin-offs that could continue the storylines of various characters from the series.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house among the full cast and crew on the last day of filming Ted Lasso‘s season three. The shot was in the fictional Richmond Fc locker room before its championship game against rival West Ham — and before beloved coach Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis (who’s nominated for lead actor and writing in addition to comedy series), was scheduled to return to the U.S. Instead of his usual pep talk, Lasso introduces a video, looking back at the team’s growth. “The tears are real,” says Declan Lowney, who directed this episode and eight others during the three seasons of the 11-time Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series. (Its 10 noms this year include nods to most of the talent mentioned in this story.) Famously based on a 2013 NBC Sports promo, Sudeikis’ depiction of an American college football coach who moves to...

This story about the Emmy-nominated songs first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In the Emmys’ Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category, it pays to be funny. After all, this is the category where the winners include “Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “It’s Not Just for Gays Anymore” from the Tony Awards, “Dick in a Box” from “Saturday Night Live” and, um, “I’m F—ing Matt Damon” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Over the past two decades, comedic songs have won more than two-thirds of the time. Most years, they’ve landed the majority of the nominations.
This year, four of the six nominees are from comedies: “Fought & Lost” and “A Beautiful Game” from “Ted Lasso,” “Your Personal Trash Man Can” from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Now You Know” from the TV movie “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Coach Beard is getting married! On June 29, "Ted Lasso" actor Brendan Hunt announced his engagement to his longtime girlfriend, Shannon Nelson, in a post on Instagram. According to his caption, Hunt captured the exact moment Nelson, who also appeared in one episode of "Ted Lasso" as Ms. Ledbetter, said yes. The blurry photo features a closeup of a smiling Nelson showing off her ring. "The majestic @snoopshann, so rarely photographed in her natural habitat, captured here in the act of saying 'yes," Hunt wrote.
Nelson shared her excitement on her own Instagram. In addition to sharing the same photo Hunt shared, she also posted a close-up snap of herself with her new fiancé. "We are a family," she wrote. "A beautiful wonderful family and will be for always. Some folks have assumed we had already done this, but truth be told we had other priorities in becoming a family. Now it feels right.

Monday again? How does this keep happening? If you’re a fan of “Yellowstone” and its various spinoffs, you had a good, or at the very least informative week last week. The show’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan said in an interview that the show will return for the final episodes of Season 5 at some point, and that the conclusion might be longer than the six episodes originally promised.
“Ted Lasso” fans also got positive news last week, though admittedly a bit more ambiguous. Series star and co-creator Brendan Hunt indicated that more seasons of the show or new spinoffs are possible in some form, but that everyone who worked on it needed to take a break and come back to see what potential really exists for more.
Until those shows make their way back to airwaves and streaming platforms, however, there is a fantastic lineup of new shows and movies coming to streaming this week!

On the long list of “Ted Lasso” creators, it can be easy to overlook the name of Brendan Hunt. The multi-talented artist plays the equally reticent and wacky Coach Beard on “Lasso,” and recently sat down with the Los Angeles Times to offer his thoughts on the future of Apple TV+’s flagship series, among other topics.

Hunt told the Times that Apple CEO Tim Cook had been to visit the set while Season 3 was in production, and told everyone there he “sure hope[d] there’s a Season 4.” Hunt said that Cook’s message in relaying those words was very clear and that when the boss tells you what he wants, it’s wise to at least give it consideration.

Having covered this business for a while, I’ve written several stories over the years about pilot and series recastings, and it always strikes me as one of the cruelest moments for anyone to experience in this business.
Imagine you’ve been given a role in a pilot: The exciting news appears in the trades, you film the episode and take the cast publicity photos. Then your show is picked up! But there’s a caveat: Your role is being re-shot with a new actor. Devastating! Cue sad trombone sound effect.
That’s why I like these kinds of stories better: The background actors, guest stars and recurring actors who eventually graduate to series regular status thanks to sheer persistence and talent. That’s the case this season for “Ted Lasso” standout James Lance, who plays Trent Crimm — formerly of The Independent, now just independent — on the show.

This story about Phil Dunster and “Ted Lasso” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Ask “Ted Lasso” fans to name their favorite storyline of the surprisingly super-sized Season 3 and you’ll likely get a unanimous answer: the burgeoning bromance between Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster). The relationship would have been unimaginable in Season 1, when the two alpha males openly despised each other. But the bad blood was wiped clean by Jamie’s transformation from AFC Richmond bad boy to team sweetheart.
“I made a petition that I signed 25,000 times myself and gave it to the writers every day so that they would start writing Roy and Jamie scenes, because it was sort of my raison d’etre for a while,” Dunster said, smiling. “Brett is a huge part of why people enjoy that story because you can see him fighting...

[This story contains spoilers for “So Long, Farewell,” the season three finale of Ted Lasso.]
Ten days after the season three finale of Ted Lasso left fans wondering if this was truly the end of the hit Apple TV+ series, its stars reunited at a For Your Consideration Emmys event on Saturday night to weigh in on that final episode and the show’s mysterious future.
Though Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein and Brendan Hunt were forced to miss the event amid the writers strike and rules that WGA members can’t currently promote their projects, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Phil Dunster, Jeremy Swift and Cristo Fernández were among the stars in attendance at the TV Academy event.
Dunster joked that when reading the final episode script and seeing how everything would wrap up, “I remember the WhatsApp group with everyone on was full of like, ‘Bastards, you made me cry,’ and it was really sad. It’s like being at school, and school finishes, and...

The Season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso” left fans with many burning questions, some of which Emmy Award winner and 2021 acting nominee Brendan Hunt tried to answer last week during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session.
“I’M Here, Baby! Before I launch in – thank you, from all of us who have worked on this show, for your eyes and your emotions and your support,” Hunt, who co-created the show and stars as Coach Beard, wrote on June 1. “We never imagined a tv show about soccer, on a streaming service that didn’t exactly exist yet, could ever have been so fortunate as to have this kind of following. We Appreciate You All.”
One of the bigger dangling threads left behind in the closing moments of the third season finale – much of which plays like a possible series finale – was the status of Beard’s friendship with Ted Lasso himself (Jason Sudeikis...
