Peccadillo Pictures has released the trailer for ‘A House in Jerusalem,’ a moving study of love and loss that creates an eerie sense of foreboding as the worlds of the living and dead collide.
10-year-old Rebecca, together with her father, relocates from the UK to Jerusalem seeking a fresh start following the tragic death of her mother. Their old family home in the Valley of the Ghosts becomes the setting for mysterious events and an unlikely friendship between Rebecca and Rasha, a young Palestinian girl only she can see. Could it be that the walls of the house are infused with the history and emotions of past generations or is Rasha simply a figment of Rebecca’s imagination?
As Rebecca delves deeper into the secrets of the house, she discovers Rasha’s true identity and the shared grief that binds them. This poignant tale explores memory, trauma, and the longing...

In “The Taste of Apples Is Red,” Syrian director Ehab Tarabieh tells an enchanted tale of religion, war, family and unforgotten sins of a distant past.
As a native of the occupied Golan Heights and an opponent of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Tarabieh was eager to make a film about what was happening in Syria. A member of the minority Druze community, Tarabieh also had insights into a religion that has as its central pillar the belief in reincarnation. Bringing together these elements, infused with magical realism, he has created a story about family, faith and the absurdity of living under Israeli occupation next to a raging war just beyond the border.
A fan of Guillermo del Toro as well as of Studio Ghibli, Tarabieh says, “It’s about imagination. When you put imagination into something, you force the viewer to think.”

Feature debut of Ehab Tarabieh, “The Taste of Apples is Red” features a very interesting main topic, as it focuses on the events that transpire among a small, intensely religious community whose people live in the Golan Heights, and believe in reincarnation, in a way that suggests that the number of their members always remains the same.
“The Taste of Apples is Red“ is screening at Thessaloniki International Film Festival
After an initial scene involving a mother and his son who seems to be the reincarnation of a soldier, we are introduced to the main protagonist, Kamel, a respected religious leader among the aforementioned community, who tries to keep things in balance in the wake of fierce battles of the Syrian Civil War. His decision about the mother and the child weighs heavily upon him, but the true tension comes when his brother, Mustafa, reappears on his doorstep, after missing for almost 50 years.

Though born and raised in Haifa, Israel, filmmaker Amos Gitai had never heard of Fattoush, a popular restaurant-cum-club located in the port city.
“I discovered this club through one of the actresses from one of my previous films. She basically said, ‘Why don’t I take you on a tour of the nightlife in your own town, which you don’t know,’” says Gitai.
That tour, and Fattoush, forms the focal point of “Laila in Haifa,” Gitai’s latest drama, which follows 18 characters from all walks of life as they converge for one night at the Haifa club. The film, which debuted Tuesday in competition at the Venice Film Festival, features a diverse cast of Palestinian and Israeli actors, including Bahira Ablassi, Tom Baum, Tsahi Halevi, Makram Khoury and Amir Khoury.
“The first thing I needed to cast was the site,” says Gitai of Fattoush, a spot known for its spirit of inclusivity.

"There are a lot of people out there who'd do anything to stop me from exposing the truth." Vertical Ent. has unveiled an official trailer for spy drama Spider in the Web, the latest film from Israeli filmmaker Eran Riklis. This "riveting new spy drama in the vein of John Le Carré" stars Sir Ben Kingsley as an aging Mossad agent struggling to maintain his relevance. His bond with a younger operative sent to monitor him while he's on a secret mission in the heart of a troubled Europe is a reflection on human relationships as well as "on the Europe of today – fragile, troubled, under constant threats from the outside and in turmoil on the inside." Also starring Monica Bellucci, Makram Khoury, Filip Peeters, and Itay Tiran. This looks like a solid, action-y spy thriller with some big twists, but it also looks rather derivative without anything new to offer.

"A love that can't be stopped." The first official Us trailer has debuted for Fatih Akin's epic new film The Cut. One night he learns that his twin daughters may be alive, and goes on a quest to find them leading him all the way to America. This looks quite magnificent, despite mixed reviews. Actress Natalie Portman is a veteran of the big screen, having already amassed two decades of experience since her feature film debut in Luc Besson’s 1994 film Léon: The Professional. Her subsequent career has seen her work with The Wachowskis, Mike Nichols, Wes Anderson, Michael Mann, Darren Aronofsky, and Anthony Minghella, and with Portman dipping her directorial toes in short films, many were curious to see if she’d make the jump to behind the camera for a feature film. Her latest feature will see her do just that.
Titled A Tale of Love and Darkness, Portman pulls triple duty on the film, as performer and director alongside writing the screenplay, adapted from the memoir by Amos Oz. The film’s synopsis is as follows.

Cannes: Watch a Clip from Natalie Portman's Feature Directorial Debut, 'A Tale of Love and Darkness'
Natalie Portman's feature directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness, will enjoy its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year, playing as a Special Screenings selection, but the prestige of a Cannes screening also comes with the scrutiny of a Cannes screening. This year's Cannes selection is filled with top tier international talent so I wouldn't be surprised if Portman is feeling the heat, but here's to hoping she's put something special together with her first effort as today we get a first look at a new clip from the movie. Based on Amos Oz's international best-seller, A Tale of Love and Darkness is the story of Oz's youth at the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel. The film details young Amos' relationship with his mother and his birth as a writer, looking at what happens when the stories we tell,...

Natalie Portman is no stranger to the world of directing, having helmed two short features in the past, most notably a segment in the romantic melange New York, I love You. However, the actress-cum-filmmaker is now primed to make her directorial debut with the feature-length adaptation, A Tale of Love and Darkness.
Lifted from the pages of Amos Oz’s acclaimed 2002 autobiographical novel, Portman’s involvement in the project is multi-faceted. Not only will the Thor: The Dark World star call the shots from behind the lens, Love and Darkness will see her work on the screenplay and star in the film as Fania Oz. In essence, the movie will center around a journalist and writer, who takes a stand as an advocate of a potential two-state solution to the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine. While Natalie Portman is obviously known for her acting career, it’s clear she has ambitions behind the camera as well. She's helmed two shorts so far, perhaps most notably a segment in 2008’s “New York, I Love You,” but now she’s made an entire feature-length effort. Titled “A Tale of Love and Darkness” which she also wrote and adapted from the memoir, the movie is about a writer, journalist, and advocate of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Portman herself also stars and the movie features Gilad Kahana, Shira Haas and Makram Khoury. Here’s the official synopsis: Based on Amos Oz's international best-seller, A Tale Of Love And Darkness is the story of Oz's youth at the end of the British Mandate for Palestine and the early years of the State of Israel. The film details young Amos' relationship with his mother and his birth as a writer,...

This is an unexpected but beautiful, inspiring film. It tells the very human story of youth yearning to express themselves through art (in this case as dancers) who end up through no wish or foresight as socially dangerous protesters against a tyrannical, arbitrarily repressive government.
Iran is such an interesting country with one of the oldest cultures in the world. It was fascinating to see youth whose only wish was to create art being pulled into social protest. In recent years from abroad we have studied the various moves politically of their conservative oppressive government. I have always wondered what the youth, artists and intellectuals were and are going through there. This film brings us inside, up close.
"Desert Dancer" by Richard Raymond follows the true, inspiring story of a brave Iranian dancer, Afshin Ghaffarian.
Set in Tehran during the volatile climate of the 2009 presidential election and the start of the “Green Movement,” Afshin and a group of dancers (including “Elaheh” played by Freida Pinto) risk their lives and form an underground dance company.
One of the most socially dangerous things they do is to go on the forbidden internet to look at online dance videos.
With what little access to the Internet they had, the group discovers music and dance videos that were banned from viewing in their country.
The group learns various forms, techniques and styles of dance from timeless legends like Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev. Inspired by these newfound heroes, they stage their own performances and uncover a passion for dance and one another.
While the political and cultural backdrop of "Desert Dancer" is very unique to the time and place, the struggle to overcome oppression— whether from a government or from within— proves universal.
"Desert Dancer" stars Freida Pinto, Reece Ritchie, Tom Cullen, Nazanin Boniadi and Makram J. Khoury. Director: Richard Raymond; Screenplay: Jon Croker, based on the life story of Afshin Ghaffarian; Producers: Pippa Cross, Fabiola Beracasa, Izabella Miko, Luis Astorquia

Save The Last Dance was one of my favorite movies when I was growing up. It wasn't just because Julie Stiles looked awesome dancing in circles, but the combination of dance and a struggling environment was a powerful one*. And that's what Desert Dancer, a new film by Richard Raymond, seems to bring to the table: dance and struggle.
The setting is Iran, and the story follows Afshin Ghaffarian and some friends (one of which is Elaheh, played by Frieda Pinto) who risk their lives and form an underground dance company. Directors with shorts at the Jerusalem Film Festival are readying an intriguing slate of features, including an ambitious period drama about Judas Iscariot, a documentary omnibus about life in the West Bank and a drama about gay life in Israel.
Directing duo Ehab Tarabieh and Yoav Gross, whose Berlin Golden Bear nominee Smile, and the World Will Smile Back charts the exchange between a Palestinian family (the al-Haddad family are co-directors) and Israeli soldiers, are planning a Life In A Day-style doc omnibus about life in the West Bank.
As was the case with Smile, participating families will be encouraged to take an active part in the post-production process with camera training also available. Funding is likely to come from B’Tselem.
Recent Tel Aviv Film School graduate Shira Porat, director of short Has Anyone Seen Eyal Nurich?, is on course to renew her collaboration with her award-winning lead actress Hadas Yaron (Fill The Void) in...

The festival said in statement: “Despite the security situation, more than 100 distinguished international guests are on their way to Jerusalem…The Festival’s international guests have expressed their support of the non-cancellation of the Festival and are due to arrive in Jerusalem in the coming days.”
Jonze, who recently won an Academy Award for best original screenplay for his sci-fi romance Her, will give a masterclass following a screening of his Oscar-nominated fantasy comedy Being John Malkovich — which marks its 15th anniversary this year.
