In 1980, the TV miniseries Shogun became the first — and, so far, still only — American television production filmed entirely in Japan. So, considering the authenticity the new production of Shogun has strived to achieve — including having the Japanese characters speaking in subtitled Japanese — it’s a little surprising to learn that the new series was filmed not in Japan, but in the Vancouver, Canada area. Producer Eriko Miyagawa, who helped populate the production with a cast that’s nearly all Japanese, told us it was a bit of culture shock to step off the set and be in Canada. Beverly Hills, 90210 star Shannen Doherty has been battling brain and breast cancer since her diagnosis in 2015.
She shared on a recent episode from her podcast Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty that she is grateful to be alive and “to spend time with the people that are by our sides through thick and thin, who don’t walk away, who love us unconditionally, and that have the same beliefs and morals and standards and people who have character.”
In November, Doherty announced that the disease had spread to her bones.
But she would not let that stop her from enjoying the holiday season. The star also stated that she had planned out all of her transfusions and medical work so that she would be well enough to celebrate by Christmas time and could make the most of the season.

This grizzled dude isn’t getting older. He’s getting deadlier. That’s the satisfying hook that makes FX’s The Old Man, loosely based on Thomas Perry’s taut novel, such an invigorating and surprising thriller. Is Dan Chase, or whatever he’s calling himself, a good guy or a bad guy? It’s not always easy telling the heroes from the villains in this season-long manhunt for a former CIA operative who’s been living off the grid for some 30 years. Roused to action when an assassin wakes his two loyal Rottweilers, this old man quickly proves he’s still a lethal player not to be messed with. Jeff Bridges is also a survivor, sidelined with lymphoma and Covid during production. He brings a gruff gravitas and an innate sense of unwavering decency to the role, for which he assumes three identities over the four episodes available for review.

Shannen Doherty has acted since she was a child, and throughout the 1980s, she worked steadily on television (as Jenny on “Little House on the Prairie”) and in movies (as Heather Duke in “Heathers”). In the early ‘90s, she achieved icon status after the slow-burn explosion of the teen soap “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which propelled its cast into the spotlight, and led the gossip press to follow their every move. After that initial blast of celebrity, Doherty continued to work prolifically in “Mallrats” (1995), “Charmed,” a tonnage of TV movies and more. She even starred in a 2012 reality show, “Shannen Says,” which followed her planning her wedding to photographer Kurt Iswarienko.

Once BH90210 viewers realized that Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Jennie Garth et al were playing not their characters, but (versions of) themselves, there was another twist on tap: the actors’ on-screen families were fictitious.
For example, Spelling in real life is wed to Dean McDermott, with whom she has done reality-tv shows and with whom she does have many (five) kids. On BH90210, however, Tori’s husband is named “Nate” (played by Mother May I Sleep With Danger‘s Ivan Sergei), and they have a full half-dozen rugrats.
