In 2003 the England won the Rugby Union World Cup, capping years of development that transformed the sport from amateur pursuit to a game dominated by honed professionals. Documentary-maker James Erskine uncovers the human stories behind the rejuvenation of English rugby that led to World Cup victory
The latest sports doc from the industrious James Erskine zeroes in on that mid-90s moment when English rugby union was converted from hidebound amateur pursuit to the better organised proposition that carried home the 2003 World Cup.
Again, Erskine’s broadly conventional method involves informed talking heads casting light on carefully sourced archive: bluff warrior Martin Johnson represents the old school, pensive Jonny Wilkinson the new wave. Yet he’s becoming more adept at juggling the micro (analysis of coach Clive Woodward’s myriad one-yard gains) with the macro (discussing the mixed bag of Murdoch money) and retains his knack for uncovering the human stories behind these gamechangers: Johnson’s excitement at receiving a free mobile from sponsors soon subsided when he realised nobody else had one to call.

Behind an inconspicuous door on the 16th floor of a normal-looking office building near Penn Station, you will find a hidden stairwell flanked with piles of flesh-toned resin slabs. The top of the stairs leads right into Keith Edmier’s studio — the tight narrow space between the building and the sky perched just beneath the building’s lighting rod. In fact, thunderstorms, such as those depicted in the 19th-century paintings of Martin Johnson Heade, are one of the dozen or so explored themes underlying Edmier’s exhibition "Regeneratrix" opening May 9 at Petzel Gallery in Chelsea.A foam core model of the exhibition — with a noticeable crack in the gallery’s skylight — inhabited most of Edmier’s floor space. “I got interested in the whole story of the birth of Aphrodite born from sea foam of Chronos castrating his father Uranus,” Edimier says. “I wanted something to fall from the sky...

Gavin DeGraw’s latest single, “Best I Ever Had,” may be a toe-tapping track about the one that got away, but the song’s title phrase could also describe his entire Make A Move experience. For his fourth studio album, released earlier this month, the musician mostly known for his piano-based pop sound and love-drenched ballads partnered with co-writers and producers for all eleven tracks (including Ryan Tedder, Butch Walker, Busbee, Martin Johnson, Benny Blanco and Kevin Rudolf) – a creative decision unheard of for the habitual “hermit” songwriter. “When you’re writing alone and you hit a wall,

For those of you who haven’t seen her in a while, Tisdale has been busy working on both her music and acting careers, and is next set to appear as an escort of the gritty FX drama series Sons of Anarchy. The Rfu announced the new England Elite Performance Squad on Wednesday, revealing the names of those expected to take England forward into the Six Nations.
The squad has 15 players who were not in New Zealand, with the older heads of Mike Tindall and Nick Easter failing to make the cut.
Nine players are uncapped, with the likes of Own Farrell and Ben Morgan getting their chance as has been predicted in the media for some weeks now. Four others have one cap to their name, in the form of Mouritz Botha, Charlie Sharples, Chris Robshaw and Joe Simpson.
Other players getting a chance include young Harlequins prop Joe Marler, who is likely to celebrate with a typically outrageous hair style, the perennial nearly man Phil Dowson in the back row, alongside fellow Saint Calum Clark, raising the prospect of a all Northampton Back row with Tom Wood.

Has Ashley Tisdale found a new flame already?
The actress was spotted at Lax in Los Angeles Monday with a tall, dark and handsome gentleman. Tisdale and the sunglass-clad mystery man -- who looks to be Martin Johnson, lead singer from the pop-punk band Boys Like Girls -- were returning from their holiday weekend in New York City.
The duo were spotted heading into a New Year's Eve party at Lady Gaga's father's new restaurant, Joanne Trattoria to ring in the New Year on Saturday night.
Paparazzi snapped them Monday as they waited for their ride, a pile of luggage in front of them, snuggling in close for a romantic little moment. Tisdale rested her head on the shoulder of her possible new man, with a sweet smile on her face.
The former Disney darling split from her longtime boyfriend, Scott Speer, only last month after over two years of dating.

More money, less respect
“He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money.”
Another country, another century, and yet the words of American founding father Benjamin Franklin hold just as much meaning now as the fallout from England’s Rugby World Cup campaign gets worse.
England rugby PR machine hit another iceberg with the revelation in the Times that the England squad was beset by divisions and greed with the rugby far down the list of priorities for some.
The news comes from leaked reports into the campaign in New Zealand and it is car crash reading that gives momentum and explanation to why Martin Johnson resigned last week.

Headline writers found their jobs made easier yet again today as it was revealed Manu Tuilagi, the England centre, had been fined Nz$10,000 for wearing a sponsored mouth guard, contravening the International Rugby Board’s (Irb) strict Rugby World Cup terms on participation, which are designed to protect official tournament sponsors.
Although in itself not a huge issue, it is the latest in an increasingly long line of events that have occurred in New Zealand that have seen England featuring on the front pages, rather than just the back.
Manu has professed his innocence in what could have been a genuine mistake. But the fact his brother Alesana, currently part of the Samoa squad, was also sanctioned for the same offence last week could lead to a few eyebrows being raised. And when it comes to eyebrows, Martin Johnson fends off all-comers.
So what is going on with England? Well...

With storms forecast and wind swirling around Eden Park in Auckland, it wasn’t just the weather that made this seem like a UK based affair. With the crowd swelled by those who had made the pilgrimage to the other side of the world to see their side, the anthems were belted out with a passion that sent tingles down the spine, the faces of the players showing just how much this game means.
This game was a must win for both teams, despite England being able to qualify with a narrow defeat in a low scoring game. The early exchanges were Tartan in colour, showing determination to play the hard running game the team selection had suggested. Sean Lamont, playing at 12, caused the defence a few early troubles, with England giving away a couple of free kicks at the set piece.

With seven changes to the team that beat Georgia 41-10 last Sunday, all the headlines were on Hrh Mike Tindall, who has been targeted by the media following the release of CCTV footage of him talking to a woman. The fact nothing of note actually happened has been overlooked by the papers, and it’s not something I would expect to affect Tindall’s performance as he replaces Shontayne Hape. Martin Johnson is clever enough not to take the risk if he even thought there was a chance. And who would argue with Johnno? Anyone? Exactly…
In what could be considered close to the first choice Xv, Mark Cueto makes his return for the unfortunate Delon Artmitage. Manu Tuilagi is given another chance to find his feet at the top level at outside centre, and Jonny Wilkinson slots back in to fly-half after an encouraging performance last week from Toby Flood.

As I sat at an hour that time forgot and my shoulders draped in an England flag (thanks 02) doubling as a poor excuse for a duvet, my overwhelming feeling for this game was “please be better England.”
Not “please win”, just better. Why? Well this game, with the greatest respect, was not one that should have been thought of as a ‘maybe’. Admittedly the Georgians have made great strides from World Cup’s of old (anyone remember 85-6 against England in 2003?) and gave the Scots a though time earlier this week, but given our standing in the world game, anything but a ‘W’ would have been unacceptable.
The team selection didn’t give too many surprises. As is the done thing now, the team was rotated wholeheartedly with the Youngs and Flood partnership given the chance to validate a more attractive attacking set up.

The Royal family celebrated yet another wedding this year as the Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips walked down the aisle on Saturday, July 30 afternoon in the historic Edinburgh. The ceremony took place in a small Church of Scotland called Canogate Kirk where the Queen worships when she's in town.
Phillips married the captain of England's rugby team, Mike Tindall, in an ivory silk and satin gown designed by the Queen's personal couturier, Stewart Parvin. Carrying a cream-colored hand bouquet, she finished the look with a Jimmy Choo shoes, a cathedral-length veil and a tiara owned by Princess Anne. Meanwhile, the groom wore a coattail suit with gray stripes on the trousers.
Guests, including newlywed Prince William and Kate Middleton, arrived at the venue at 1 P.M. and the bride arrived six minutes later than the scheduled entry at 3 P.M. She hired the student chorus from her private school she attended to sing at the ceremony.

A welcome re-airing for Spike Lee's documentary about the flooding of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, to which the Us authorities' response was so casual, belated and inept as to make some suspect that the disaster's mostly poor African-American victims were being deliberately abandoned to their fate. Rather too much was made at the time of Lee supposedly encouraging the point of view that the levee had been dynamited, based on eyewitnesses talking of hearing a "boom". He did not. The charge of gross incompetence is damning enough and laid out here soberly and thoroughly. DS

A music video for Boys Like Girls' new single "Heart Heart Heartbreak" has come out for viewing pleasure. Premiered via Vevo on Friday, June 4, the clip catches Martin Johnson and his bandmates performing live at a beauty pageant, where some of the contestants are sabotaging their rivals of their chance to win.
"Heart Heart Heartbreak" is the band's third single from their sophomore album, "Love Drunk". The single has become the band's 6th consecutive charting single at Top 40 radio. Sent to U.S. radio on April 13, it was released as a follow-up to their second single that features country star Taylor Swift, "Two Is Better Than One".
Describing the song, frontman Martin explained earlier that the tune was really inspired by heartbreak.
"Basically the song is saying, 'Listen, if you're leaving, don't say you love me. I see we're headed for heartbreak here," he said. "I'm ready to handle it.

Starting with the band's live performance at a "faux arcade set-up", it continues with Ashley Tisdale making his way to the venue with all the boys in there falling for her.

In line with the band's excitement, Ashley previously told MTV on the video's shooting set, "Actually, I'm a really big fan of Boys Like Girls.
