Former GOP Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colorado) slammed GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for getting talking points from Russian President Vladimir Putin while threatening to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Now that Congress has returned from recess, Johnson has to figure out how he can pass new aid for Ukraine, something that far-right Republicans such as Greene oppose.
Greene slammed Johnson for holding a vote to fund Ukraine, saying it was one of the most “egregious things” he could do.
“Moscow Marjorie is focused now on this Ukraine issue, getting her talking points from the Kremlin, making sure she is popular, and getting a lot of coverage,’ Buck told CNN’s Erin Burnett Outfront.
Buck, one of the eight Republicans who voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker, accused the Georgia representative of always focusing on her social media account instead of the national interest.

Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) have endorsed a bill that would ban non-citizens from voting in federal elections — a thing that is already illegal.
If you haven’t already guessed, the legislation is a brazen stunt intended to gin up public support for a former president campaigning on an anti-immigration platform and a house speaker on the brink of being ousted by extremists in his caucus.
No state allows non-citizens to vote in federal or state elections, but there are limited instances in which residents who have...

The votes by 19 conservative lawmakers to tank government surveillance legislation on Wednesday was the culmination of a decade of efforts to build a left-right alliance against warrantless spying. The rare setback for the intelligence community may only be temporary, though, and the federal government could soon enjoy far broader surveillance powers.
Fresh off an embarrassing defeat, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has regrouped and is moving to advance the legislation — which would reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act — on the House floor again on Friday. Lawmakers will consider one...

Congress is back from its Easter Break and things are already getting chaotic in the House of Representatives. Amid chatter that House Speaker Mike Johnson may soon face a motion to vacate from Marjorie Taylor Greene, one representative wants to remind Republicans in the lower chamber of their top priority: electing Donald Trump in November.

Missed Monday’s late-night monologues? We’ve got you covered with our round-up of the night’s best laughs from across the dial.
Dogs and Cats, Living Together…
Well, the total solar eclipse came and went in the run-up to each late-night show’s taping on Monday. And, confounding evangelicals, the superstitious, and Republican politicians from Marjorie Taylor Green to Mike Johnson to Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the biblical Rapture did not arrive with it to sweep the (self-)righteous up to Heaven. That left those who attempted to lay blame for this week’s spate of unusual natural phenomena on the Lgbtqi community, abortion, Joe Biden, immigrants, and other people they don’t like with egg on their flushing, still earth-bound faces.
“The big news today—the world ended!,” was Jon Stewart’s perhaps hopeful greeting to his somehow in attendance Daily Show audience, before he and his...

The Republican Study Committee released a budget proposal that calls for raising the Social Security retirement age to 69 years old and slashing funding for Medicare.
The RSC is chaired by Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Oklahoma), and its members consist of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and three top leadership deputies. Johnson chaired this group from 2019 to 2021.
The proposals, unlikely to become law this year because of opposition from Democrats who control the Senate and White House, indicate how many Republicans will hope to govern if they win the 2024 elections.
They also play into an argument that President Joe Biden wants to use against Donald Trump and Republicans while running for reelection.
The budget was released by the RSC, a group of over 170 House GOP lawmakers, including many of Trump’s allies. The RSC proposal noted that Biden supported raising the age to 65 to 67, the current retirement age while he was a senator in the 1980s.

A story that was widely shared by conservative politicos and right-wing media has been retracted by its publisher, the Daily Caller.
The piece claimed that the Biden administration banned religious-themed Easter eggs from a contest at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. In fact, the restrictions were long-standing ones from the American Egg Board that have applied for the past 45 years, across administrations including that of Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump.
“Following the publication of this article, the Daily Caller became aware of additional context that undercut the central assertion of this article and its newsworthiness,” according to the retraction notice. “The ban of religious symbolism on eggs as part of the White House Easter egg activities has been longstanding, dating back decades, and the Biden administration did not make any modifications to this rule.”

Updated: This past weekend saw a parade of Republican elected officials and conservative commentators blast the White House for recognizing Sunday as the Transgender Day Of Visibility, as it happened to fall this year on the same day as Easter.
That continued into Monday, with radio hosts highlighting the outrage and FoxNews.com devoting its 11th story so far over the flap.
At today’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called out Fox, noting that “we are at first … confused on their coverage. We are grateful that Fox agrees with President Biden about the importance of recognizing trans day of visibility.”
She then went on to read a tweet that Fox TV, the broadcast network sister division of Fox News, put out in 2021 that noted the Trans Day Of Visibility and read, “To all the transgender men, women and non-binary folx, we see you and stand with you.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case that threatens to limit access to mifepristone — a critical component of the abortion pill protocol — nationwide. A decision in the case is not expected until June, but close observers of the Supreme Court seem to think the case will be dismissed over a lack of standing.
The fact that this case made it all the way to the high court, though, is a testament to the reality that ending access to the abortion pill — the most common method of abortion,...

During President Joe Biden‘s State of the Union address, House Speaker Mike Johnson was visibly displeased as Biden criticized his predecessors’ tax cuts while taking credit for reducing the deficit by $1 trillion.
Seated next to Vice President Kamala Harris in the traditional speaker’s seat, Johnson’s expressions of disagreement were prominently displayed to television viewers. He shook his head and grimaced when Biden mentioned Republicans wanting to put Social Security on the “chopping block.” Additionally, Johnson rolled his eyes in response to Biden’s claim that he would sign a border security bill if presented with one and laughed at the assertion.
Johnson assumed the role of speaker after the removal of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-California) in October 2023, after a remarkable 21-day period without a leader.
This marked Congress’s longest stretch without a clear direction since 1962 when it took 55 days to elect a new speaker.

About a half hour after Joe Biden finished up a give-em-hell type of State of the Union speech, he was still in the House chamber, shaking hands, taking selfies and chatting up other senators in candid moments that were caught on C-Span. The president lingered for so long that some photographers joked that soon the House chaplain may show up to give the next morning’s prayer.
Finally, House Speaker Mike Johnson, still on the rostrum, called an end to the proceedings, and the TV lights dimmed. Biden got the signal that it was time to go, but even then it took him a few more minutes to exit.
The speech and even Biden’s endurance in its aftermath should have provided some reassurance to Democrats fretting about Biden’s age and agility in recent months — as one prominent Hollywood backer put it to me the other day, the term is “freaking out.

Updated: During his State of the Union speech Thursday, Joe Biden exchanged words with Republican hecklers, skewered Donald Trump without naming him, and framed the November election as one of decency and democracy versus retribution and resentment.
Stretching over an hour, Biden appeared feisty and energetic, occasionally stumbling over his lines. More often than not, his speech was a campaign restart sprinkled with Sotu standards, the laundry list of accomplishments and references to the everyday figures in the gallery. Biden, aided by chants of “four more years,” seemed determined to show some verve and allay some of the fears of fretful Democrats.
One of the most contentious parts of the speech came when Biden slammed Republicans for rejecting a bipartisan border compromise, eliciting boos and some heckling from GOP members. At one moment, after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) shouted at him to “remember Laken Riley,” a 22-year-old student...

Update: The House Energy & Commerce Committee unanimously passed legislation to compel ByteDance to divest TikTok or face having the social media platform banned on app stores or web hosting services.
The committee voted 50-o for the legislation, which now must be voted on by the full House. But Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed support for the bill.
The vote followed a lobbying effort by TikTok, including sending prompts to users urging them to contact their member of Congress to protest the legislation.
Lawmakers’ offices reported being inundated with calls, but the strategy may have backfired when it came to members of the committee.
At a markup this afternoon, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wa), the chair of the committee, said that “we witnessed first hand, in real time, how the Chinese Communist party can weaponize platforms like TikTok to manipulate the American people.” She accused the company of forcing users...

Both Donald Trump and President Joe Biden addressed migration across the southern border during dual visits to Texas on Thursday.
Trump spoke in Eagle Pass, a border town in the Rio Grande Valley that has become a flashpoint recently due to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s dispatch of the Texas National Guard to wrest control from U.S. Border Patrol agents.
During his speech, Trump said that Biden was allowing “millions of people from places unknown” to cross the border illegally. He keyed on those who speak the language of their country of origin.

Updated: Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) said that he is stepping down as the Republican leader in the Senate, ending a tenure longer than anyone else in that position.
McConnell, 82, said on the Senate floor, “This will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.” He said that it was “time to move on,” although he said that he intended to remain in the Senate through the end of his term, which runs through 2027.
Elected in 1984, McConnell has served as Senate leader longer than anyone else, but his future in that position has increasingly been in doubt after a couple of incidents last year when he froze up as he was speaking to reporters. Republicans face a dilemma over in vitro fertilization after Alabama’s state Supreme Court ruling that says frozen embryos are “children.”
While most Republicans are anti-abortion, the party is split over the ethics of IVF.
Introduced in January, the Life at Conception Act, which is similar to the Alabama law that was the basis for the state Supreme Court ruling, states that a human being is considered one “at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization or cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.”
The act protects unborn life from conception until birth. The original act did not make an exception for IVF treatments.
The bill was backed by House Speaker Mike Johnson and 125 other House Republicans.

OnlyFans’ billionaire owner, Leonid Radvinsky, and his wife reportedly pledged $11 million to the powerhouse pro-Israel lobby American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or Aipac, last year, according to an internal donor list obtained by The Lever. Radvinsky has denied making or pledging the donation.
According to confidential internal documents reviewed by The Lever, Aipac reported a massive $90 million fundraising haul in the month following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack against Israel. One contribution stood out: an $11 million pledge from a “Mr. Anonymous Anonymous” and Katie Chudnovsky, the largest listed contribution in the documents.

It’s an election year, which means it’s once again time for Republicans to care about the border. The GOP has done all it can to raise hell over the issue — from holding government funding hostage over their extreme demands, to trying to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, to backing Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s legally dubious crusade against the federal government’s dominion over the border — while blocking efforts to bring about real change. Republicans in the House, for example, are refusing to back a bipartisan immigration deal.

Trump has recently told confidants in influential conservative media and political circles that “stupid” Republicans, particularly “RINOs” in the Senate, seem eager to hand Biden a win as he’s sunk in 2024 polls,...

Republicans have been hammering the Biden administration’s immigration policy since the moment he took office. Now, with the clamor for a deal to curb the flow of migrants through the southern border at a fever pitch, a bipartisan Senate deal may be dead on arrival in the House — and on Wednesday Rep. Troy Nehls made clear that the reason is purely political.

Update, with John Schneider statement and additional tweets: On the night he lost Fox’s The Masked Singer and spoke to various news outlets about the upcoming one-year anniversary of his wife’s death, former Dukes of Hazzard actor John Schneider called for the public executions of President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.
In a since-deleted post on X/Twitter – screen-captured by many X users including Joe Adalian, West Coast Edtior of New York Magazine’s Vulture – Schneider responded to a tweet by the president with “Mr. President, I believe you are guilty of treason and should be public hung [sic). Your son too. Your response is..? Sincerely, John Schneider.”
In a statement released through his rep, Schneider denied calling for violence or making threats.
“Seriously, folks?,” Schneider said in a statement to Deadline. “I said no such thing. Despite headlines claiming otherwise, I absolutely did not call for an act of violence or threaten a U.S.

On December 5, House Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a speech at this year’s National Association of Christian Lawmakers gala.
During his speech, he thanked the event’s organizers for not inviting any reporters, though it has not been made clear if he knew that the event’s organizer would record and post a video of the gala on his Facebook page.
“I’ll tell you a secret since the media’s not here,” Johnson told them.
His secret was that he had many conversations with God in the lead-up to the speaker role with which he was anointed.
“The Lord impressed upon my heart a few weeks before this happened that something was going to occur,” he said. “And the Lord very specifically told me in my prayers to prepare but to wait. I had this sense that we were going to come to a Red Sea moment in our...

The House of Representatives has officially authorized an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, formalizing their years-long fishing expedition against the president in a floor vote on Wednesday.
Lawmakers voted 221-212 along party lines to approve the resolution authorizing the inquiry.
Before being ousted from the speakership by his own party, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) initiated a vote-less, officially unofficial impeachment inquiry into the president. His successor, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced his decision to move forward with a floor vote to legitimize the probe via an...

House Republicans will vote Wednesday on whether to formalize their impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. The party has struggled to gin up a legitimate rationale for moving forward with the inquiry, which has yet to produce any credible evidence of wrongdoing, but one Republican is saying the quiet part out loud.
When Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) was asked Tuesday on Capitol Hill what he’s hoping to gain from an impeachment inquiry, Nehls responded: “All I can say is: Donald J. Trump 2024, baby!”

As House Republicans make public their intent to move forward with an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, they’re struggling to convince the public — and even themselves — that they’ll be able to obtain the evidence of the high crimes and misdemeanors necessary to impeach a president.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson published an op-ed in USA Today explaining his reasoning for formalizing the investigation into Biden, which has so far skirted the usual requirement of a floor vote to officially open an impeachment inquiry.

More footage from inside the Capitol on January 6 will be released to the public but, according to House Speaker Mike Johnson, some faces in that footage will be blurred out to protect the people in it. And John Oliver thinks that’s pretty “ridiculous.”
On Tuesday, Johnson noted during a press conference that “We have to blur some faces of persons who participated in the events of that day because we don’t want them to be retaliated against and to be charged by the DOJ”.
“Which is ridiculous,” Oliver marveled. “These people were part of an armed insurrection and also, there was merch! It wasn’t exactly a secret!”
The HBO host then pointed out that Johnson himself is “heavily implicated” in the events of January 6, particularly by former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, who called Johnson “one of the intellectual architects of pushing back on the stolen election.”

The foreword of the book The Revivalist Manifesto, written by House Speaker Mike Johnson, has come under scrutiny, along with his subsequent promotion of the book on social media and his podcast.
Authored by local Louisiana political blogger Scott McKay, the book espouses baseless conspiracy theories embraced by the far-right, such as the debunked “Pizzagate” hoax which alleged Democratic officials’ involvement in a trafficking ring.
The book makes unsubstantiated claims, such as the implication that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts was blackmailed and connected to disgraced trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, the book defends podcaster Joe Rogan from racism charges after it was revealed that he used racial slurs. It goes on to disparage poor voters.
Johnson’s 300-word foreword praises McKay’s book as a valuable contribution that resonates with “freedom-loving Americans.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed that House Republicans have intentionally blurred footage from the Capitol attack before the public release to prevent the January 6 rioters from criminal charges.
Johnson explained that they need to blur the faces of individuals involved in the events of that day to protect them from retaliation and potential charges by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Johnson himself was deeply involved in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election based on false claims of widespread election fraud. He emphasized the importance of individuals conducting their own research into the Capitol attack rather than relying solely on the narrative presented by the January 6 Committee.
According to Johnson, the footage was released to provide the American people with an opportunity to draw their own conclusions about the events that transpired on January 6.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) has alleged that a fellow member of Congress, whom she declined to name, committed an “assault” against her.
The allegation is reportedly directed at Rep. Richard McCormick (R-Georgia) and stems from an incident on the House floor in early November.
Before the encounter, Greene and McCormick had been engaged in a dispute over competing resolutions to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) for her comments after Hamas attacked Israel.
On the day of the incident, McCormick was engaged in an unproductive conversation with another House Republican colleague about the vote to censure Tlaib.
When he turned around, McCormick saw Greene and placed his hands on her shoulders, shook her and remarked that he could have an honest conversation with her, and implied that he couldn’t have one with the person he had turned away from.

Former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) said that she would rather the 2024 presidential election be won by a Democratic candidate, calling members of her own party a “threat.”
In an interview with CBS, Cheney said, “I believe very strongly in those principles and ideals that have defined the Republican Party, but the Republican Party of today has made a choice and they haven’t chosen the Constitution, and so I do think it presents a threat if the Republicans are in the majority in January 2025.”
After she defied her party when she spoke out against former President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol insurrection, Cheney, once the No. 3 leader of the House Republican Conference, was removed from her position and later lost her seat.
Her refusal to temper her criticisms of Trump in the weeks and months after the insurrection led to significant alienation from fellow party members.

In a keynote speech to a gathering of Christian nationalist lawmakers Tuesday night, House Speaker Mike Johnson compared himself to Moses, leading the GOP conference — and America — through the parted waters of the Red Sea.
Johnson addressed the National Association of Christian Lawmakers at the group’s award gala at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. Perhaps unaware that the event was being recorded for the Nacl Facebook page, Johnson told the crowd: “I’ll tell you a secret, since media is not here.” (“Thank you for not allowing the media in,...

House Speaker Mike Johnson has promised to release more than 44,000 hours of surveillance footage from Jan. 6 to the public, with one major caveat: The faces of some individuals who participated in the storming of the Capitol, a violent attempt to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s election, will be blurred out.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Johnson said that “the release of the January 6 tapes is a critical and important exercise, we want transparency … we trust — House Republicans trust — the American people to draw their own conclusions.”

Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”
The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.
It was also one of a few references to age throughout Sunday evening’s Kennedy Center Honors which, in addition to Crystal, honored opera singer Renée Fleming, hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah,...

Updated, with additional reaction: Liz Cheney’s new book is a scathing portrait of Republican “enablers and collaborators” who are responsible for the continued hold that Donald Trump has on the party, CNN reported on Tuesday.
With Cheney’s Oath and Honor set to be published next week, CNN Jamie Gangel obtained an advance copy and described it as an “unflinching” look at her former GOP colleagues. Cheney was ousted from Republican leadership as she continued to criticize Trump in the aftermath of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
“You get personal conversations, Republican meetings,” Gangel said on Jake Tapper’s The Lead, adding that Cheney recounts being on a Trump surrogates call on Jan. 4, 2021 in which she hears “the stark specific planning” for January 6th.

Sen. Mike Lee perpetuated an unfounded conspiracy theory that federal agents or informants were among the rioters on Jan. 6 and that one may have flashed a law enforcement badge during the attack (in reality, it was a vape). In two posts to X (formerly Twitter) over the weekend, the Republican indulged in a Maga disinformation campaign.
Lee quoted a post from former Jan. 6 committee member Liz Cheney that contained footage of the Capitol attack, writing, “Liz, we’ve seen footage like that a million times. You made sure we saw that—and nothing else.

‘A video of new House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) from last month surfaced and showed Johnson in a prayer call alongside far-right Pastor Jim Garlow from the World Prayer Network.
The call focused on Johnson’s belief that America’s wickedness was an invitation for God’s wrath, and called the country “so dark and depraved that it almost seems irredeemable at this point.”
Johnson went into great detail about why America is “in a time of judgment” as “the faith in our institutions is its lowest it’s ever been in the history of our nation.”
As evidence, he listed the increase in teens that specify as gay or nonbinary, and youth’s decline of the church.
Johnson provided his followers a glimmer of hope when he ended that the faithful few, known as the “remnant,” would be significant enough to make a difference.
