Running Sept. 18 – 21, this year’s fully in-person Cartoon Forum co-production pitch session will build on pre-pandemic attendance numbers, welcoming 290 buyers, among them nearly two dozen first-time participants, while introducing new players into the mix.
Alongside the commissioners, producers, and broadcasters that have made up Cartoon Forum’s traditional base, this year’s bustling edition will host a growing delegation of publishers hungry for fecund I.P. and niche streamers filling in the gaps left by Amazon and Netflix, who will not make the trip to Toulouse in France.
“We’re opening up to a new generation,” says Cartoon Media director Annick Maes. “We’ll have [more than] 20 companies that have never attended Cartoon before, which should make for a very interesting event. How will they pitch? What will they produce? What will they bring [to the mix]?”

Represent (En Place) is a series created by François Uzan and Jean-Pascal Zadi starring Jean-Pascal Zadi, Eric Judor, Benoît Poelvoorde and Fadily Camara. You can watch it on Netflix from January 20.
Represent is the new comedy that brings us to the most comical side of politics in this series which, at the very least, will make you laugh because it views politicians at their most ridiculous.
En Place is a parody with a well created script, characters and well paced, with that “French” touch that at times is so great and knows how to find that exact point of irony and elegance and at the same time, social critique.
This is a very entertaining comedy that is on Netflix and is like a very sharp dart that, under the guise of a comedy, goes straight to the heart of the “problem”, which is dealt with in an intelligent way and...

Everybody’s favorite high-kicking, Belgian action hero, Jean-Claude Van Damme, is back in “The Last Mercenary.” The team behind the throwback action flick was on-hand (virtually) to debut an exclusive sneak peek from the Netflix movie at San Diego Comic-Con.
The new scene was introduced by Van Damme and the film’s writer-director David Charhon at Comic-Con at Home Saturday afternoon.
The clip begins with a hooded man bound to a chair in a dingy room. What the incoming soldiers don't see, however, is Richard (Van Damme), posed in his signature splits on the ceiling. He leaps down and disarms them with unsurprising ease and frees the prisoner. Richard ends up having to wheel the clumsy prisoner out of the building on a gurney before leaping out of a window to complete the rescue mission -- only after punching out some more soldiers for good measure though.

"Life is one long op." Netflix has launched the first official trailer for a new French action film called The Last Mercenary, aka Le Dernier Mercenaire in French, from filmmaker David Charhon. This new Jcvd action comedy is dropping on Netflix right away at the end of July this summer. A mysterious former secret service known as "La Brume" (or "The Mist") agent must urgently return to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat and a mafia operation. Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as the father who must come back to France and save his son, along with Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, and Miou-Miou. Not sure why Jcvd is wearing so many goofy disguises in this, but it looks like some throwaway fun. The only thing that really makes...

There wasn't a lot of hope for the final season of "True Blood." Season six featured too many new characters, a silly Vampire "god" (Lilith), a super-powered Bill, a human torture camp for vampires and Eric seemingly going away for good. "True Blood" always thrived on trying to weave over-the-top story lines around characters the viewer could relate to. That clearly wasn't happening. In fact, it almost became almost punishment to try and watch the show. Not even the most hardcore fans believed things could turn around in season seven. When the show returned at the end of June it got off to another bumpy start. A pointless storyline about rogue vampires trying to feed off the residents of Bon Temps seemed to only create a mechanism to kill off members of the cast (honestly, do we remember any of it anymore?). Slowly, but surely, things slowed down a bit.

Arriving in limited theatres July 19th and on Blu-ray/DVD July 30th is indie horror maverick Steven C. Miller's latest project, the super creepy and equally fun Under the Bed.
A modern horror fable for a new generation of creature lovers out there, Under the Bed, which is already available on VOD platforms everywhere, follows two brothers named Neal (Jonny Weston) and Paul (Gattlin Griffith), who are dealing with a monster lurking underneath their bed which comes out to terrorize them every night when the lights go out. Their parents aren't much help at all (of course), forcing Neal and Paul to defend themselves alone against the supernatural menace living beneath their bed.
Dread Central recently chatted with Miller about what inspired his kid-centric (but still fun for adults) horror project, more on the monster mythology we didn't get to see in Under the Bed, a tease of the...

Bradford International Film Festival begins the screening of To Kill A Beaver with a dire fifteen minute French Portuguese short that would quite probably cure insomnia. Thankfully, tonight’s main feature is the product of established Polish Writer/Director, Jan Jakub Kolski, and despite a slow start, it runs rings around Four Hours Barefoot.
Hitman, Eric (Eryk Lubos) returns to his hometown to what appears to be his now empty childhood home, only to find it graffiti-covered and evidence of a squatter. Later while he destroys a beaver dam, a teenage girl (Agnieszka Pawelkiewicz) on a makeshift raft floats towards him. Kolski’s first close-up of her is comically presented with two sticks of gum protruding from either side of her mouth like the teeth of the animals Eric inexplicably hunts.
Director/Writer: Jan Jakub Kolski
Country: Poland

Watching a Quentin Dupieux film is always an adventure – albeit a quirky, absurd, and existential adventure. Most of the time you have absolutely no idea what’s going on, but for some reason you keep watching in an almost hypnotic state as your eyes are inexplicably glued to the screen. That’s exactly how I watched Rubber, taking in every visually confusing segment one by one which eventually created a mind-blowing final revelation come the epic conclusion (think of it as a really f*cked up jigsaw puzzle), and that’s the exact same experience one can expect from Wrong.
On the surface, Wrong is about a man named Dolph (Jack Plotnick) whose dog, Paul, has gone missing. There are no clues, no signs, and no information as to where Paul could be, but Dolph is deeply disturbed by the disappearance of his dog. As more time goes by and Dolph becomes increasingly more worried,...

Note: Rob Hunter’s review originally ran during Fantastic Fest 2012, but we’re re-running it now as the film opens in limited theatrical release. Weirdness has its place in cinema. It can be a fun element in everything from comedies to horror films or used to add a lighter texture to serious topics, but the one thing it can’t be is the only thing. Quentin Dupieux‘s first feature, the innocuously titled Rubber, is one of the most absurd films of the past several years. Its core plot follows a tire that comes to life and begins exploding peoples’ heads via telekinesis, but it’s also an extremely smart commentary on consumer and audience expectations. The goofiness just makes it funnier. Dupieux’s follow-up is equally weird with random character dialogue and actions that make zero sense, visual gags that go unexplained and plot story threads that go nowhere in particular. A...

As a fan of Quentin Dupieux's delightfully Dadaistic 2010 feature Rubber, I had high hopes for his new film, Wrong. I envisioned a movie just as quirky as Rubber, but with a more mainstream plot about a man searching for his lost dog.
I was, well, wrong. (Sorry -- I couldn't resist.) Wrong certainly is quirky and absurd, but it lacks the endearingly odd humor, cool factor and narrative originality of Rubber. It's weird, but not engaging.
Wrong is the story of Dolph Springer (Jack Plotnick), who awakens one morning to find that his dog, Paul, has gone missing. What happens next probably will make no more sense in written form than it does on screen, so I'll just say that while looking for his beloved pet, Dolph embarks on journeys both physical and mental.
Along the way, Dolph encounters a host of strange situations and oddball characters, among them a flaky pizza restaurant employee,...

Explain to people that one of the most interesting films of the last couple of years involved a sentient tire who was blowing up people's heads with the power of its mind, and you leave many of those people with, well, their minds blown. But that was the story of "Rubber," the 2012 movie from Quentin Dupieux, the French director also known by his DJ name, Mr. Oizo. Dupieux is back now with "Wrong," a film that's perhaps even harder to wrap your brain around than "Rubber," because it has so much going on. Dolph (Jack Plotnick) wakes up one morning to discover that his dog Paul has gone missing. His gardener, Victor (Eric Judor), informs him that a palm tree has turned into a pine, and the girl who answers the phone at the pizza place has fallen in love with him. He's still going to work in an office where it rains,...

K for Kardashian and for Kubrick (!), in addition to one more Snow White and one more Meyer cinematic entry There'll be something for everyone this coming weekend on North American screens, whether your palate (or brain) goes the Kardashian or the Kubrick way. Kim Kardashian, best known for the TV trash hit Keeping Up with the Kardashians and for her quick-as-lightning marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries, is featured in Tyler Perry's Temptation. Distributed by Lionsgate this drama about infidelity also stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Lance Gross, Vanessa Williams, Robbie Jones. (photo: a colorfully garbed Vanessa Williams and a very tightly garbed Kk) However, the probable box-office winner this weekend will be Channing Tatum. The Magic Mike and The Vow star is featured alongside Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis in Jon M. Chu's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra sequel: G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The eagerly awaited (by 11-year-olds) action flick...

Title: Wrong Director: Quentin Dupieux Starring: Jack Plotnick, Eric Judor, Alexis Dziena, Steve Little, William Fichtner, Mark Burnham His previous film, the surrealistic dark comedy “Rubber,” was about a psychokinetic tire that wandered the dusty American Southwest exploding the heads of those who got in its way, so anyone who saw that will not be very surprised by Quentin Dupieux’s new movie “Wrong,” which trades in the same sort of absurdist humor. A work of significant playfulness and imagination — it features cinema’s best dog crap joke ever, hands down – that hints at a broader promise of budding, starburst auteurism upon which the film as a whole doesn’t really deliver, “Wrong” [ Read More ]

It’s the end of an era. Gossip Girl concluded its final season with "New York, I Love You Xoxo," an epic finale to a series closed out in classic Gg style.

The finale gave us all of this one last time. Let’s discuss...

Gossip Girl Season 6 Episode 9: The Revengers
If you can’t beat him, kill him.
Throughout the final season of Gossip Girl, we’ve had to suffer through a forced separation between Blair and Chuck. As long as Bart Bass was allowed to reign supreme, Chuck couldn’t “be” with B.
Although the strain of watching Chuck and Blair push their relationship to the curb for the umpteenth time was stressful beyond belief, it gave us a new villain to hate.
Bart Bass.
Bart’s schemes don’t involve relationships, but rather millions of dollars and countless illicit activities. He was the true master of the Upper East side take down, which usually involved death.
Unfortunately, this time, death claimed Bart. After exiling his son to Moscow, we learned that Bart planned to have Chuck killed on the Bass industries private jet. The pilot was supposed to parachute to safety and let Chuck die.

From the French filmmaker who launched his career with Rubber and hit Sundance’s World Dramatic Comp with Wrong the following year, his next film a project told in seven parts actually debuted volume I in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight sidebar. So I naturally think that Wrong Cops, a freakshow starring Marilyn Manson, Mark Burnham, Grace Zabriskie, Eric Judor and a Steve Little – Sundance would not be complete without him showing up.

Here's the thing about Wrong and Rubber director Quentin Dupieux. He is very, very strange and also - as it is becoming quite clear - very, very prolific. The first chapter screened in Cannes and now the full feature is wrapped and ready to edit. Also ready to edit is Realite, another off kilter comedy starring...
