Many of the movies John Carpenter has directed are frequently mentioned as some of the greatest genre movies ever made… but there are also Carpenter movies that don’t get referenced very often. One that you rarely hear about is his Village of the Damned (watch it Here), based on the John Wyndham novel The Midwich Cuckoos and a previous film adaptation that was released in 1960. We decided it’s time to give Carpenter’s Village of the Damned some attention, and you can find out what we had to say about it in the new episode of our video series The Black Sheep. Check it out in the embed above!
Village of the Damned has the following synopsis:
Ten months after the small California town of Midwich was struck by a mysterious event during which everyone in the village fell unconscious at once, 10 local women give birth on the same day.

"So what's it about?" "Leaving a mark, getting respect." A trailer has debuted for a new indie drama titled Quest, a story about a young kid who loves tagging and graffiti, and meets a friend who might help guide him in life. Young actor Gregory Kasyan stars as Mills, a 12 year old graffiti addict who is losing faith in integrity. His home life is mess with an abusive dad and a mom who doesn't believe him. His school life isn't much better. A sympathetic teacher and champion of at risk kids enters his life. Co-starring Dash Mihok, Keith Stanfield, Lou Diamond Phillips, Betsy Brandt, Sepideh Moafi, Marlyne Barrett, Allen Maldonado, and Karen Kahn. This is premiering at a few film festivals this fall, but otherwise hasn't made much of an impact yet. Looks like it could be a cool low-key indie about the art of graffiti. Check it out. Here's...

I have a shaky relationship with Village of the Damned. On the one hand, it’s a pretty piss-poor movie in a lot of ways. It has a lot going against it. It’s a remake, the acting is ludicrous, and some of the decisions made by the characters are just mind-numbing. On the other hand, it is a John Carpenter movie, and as we’ve all learned by this point — with the exception of The Ward — even a bad John Carpenter movie is better than a lot of filmmakers’ good movies. So yes, it’s a ridiculous movie, and yes, it’s really easy to get a group of friends together, and throw this on for the purpose of laughing at it, and yes, this movie turns Christopher Reeve — a man famous to most of us because of his portrayal of Superman, humanity’s symbol of hope — into a...

April 12th is a good day to be a genre fan, as we have several great releases coming our way this Tuesday. Arrow Films has put together the definitive edition of the cult classic Bride of Re-Animator that is filled to the brim with all sorts of awesomeness, and Scream Factory is taking us to the Village of the Damned with their Collector’s Edition Blu-ray as well as a double feature of Destroyer and Edge of Sanity.
If you missed it in theaters, now you can finally catch up with The Forest as it arrives on both formats Tuesday. If you’ve been holding out on adding It Follows to your home entertainment collection, there’s a new steelbook edition coming out this week that looks great and we’re also finally getting Flight 7500 on DVD April 12th.
Other notable releases include Where the Devil Dwells, Medousa, and Schramm.

By 1995, it was safe to say that John Carpenter’s best days as a filmmaker were behind him. He had made the last of his many masterpieces one year earlier with 1994’s In the Mouth of Madness and would, in fact, direct only four more theatrical features in his career (as of this writing, at least). It would be difficult to argue for any of the four as being his best work.
Though his filmography boasts a handful of detours, most were movies Carpenter made to demonstrate his ability to do something other than horror—the romantic drama of Starman, the would-be commercial FX comedy Memoirs of an Invisible Man. He’s only ever made two movies that feel like dispassionate for-hire gigs. One is The Ward. The other is Village of the Damned, new to Blu-ray from Scream Factory.
