Nikos Kavvadias was born in 1910 in Harbin, Manchuria. His parents were
Greeks and when he was very young they returned to their homeland. From
his early years he started to write and eventually became a significant
poet in Greece. He published three collections of poetry: "Marabou"
(1933), "Pousi" (1947) and "Traverso" (1975). He also published
"Vardia" (novel, 1954) and "Tou Polemou kai Li" (short stories,
1987-after his death). "Li" is the story that the scenario of "Between
the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" is based upon. He died on February
10th 1975. He loved the sea, traveled all his life and wrote about the
life on board, the sailors, and the things he loved. A great man, great
works.
