Will Hanna and Joe Barbera might be credited for popularizing a form of animation that allowed it to be produced at a tremendously rapid clip. Looking at the producing pair's early works like "The Huckleberry Hound Show" and "The Quick Draw McGraw Show," one can see "limited animation" at work. That is: characters were designed in such a way that only parts of them would need to be animated to complete a scene. Faces were conceived at three-quarters, letting characters look to the side or full front depending only on their eyes. Necks were covered by ascots or ties, allowing heads to be animated while bodies remained static.
Because of this design, Hanna-Barbera could produce multiple animated series on a notoriously fast TV production schedule. Hanna-Barbera exploded in the late 1950s, and dominated Saturday morning through the early 1980s.
The crown jewel in their output was, of course, "The Flintstones,...

Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore are speaking out after Vili Fualaau slammed their new movie May December.
Vili, 40, recently called the new Todd Haynes-directed movie a “ripoff” of his real-life relationship with the late Mary Kay Letourneau.
In May December, Charles Melton‘s character Joe was 13 when he was seduced by Julianne‘s 36-year-old character. Vili was 12 when 34-year-old Mary Kay first victimized him in 1996. She later pleaded guilty to two counts of child rape.
Vili said that he was “offended” by the movie and slammed everyone involved for not reaching out to him for feedback.
Now, Natalie and Julianne are addressing Vili‘s criticism.
“I’m so sorry to here that. It’s not based on them,” Natalie told Entertainment Tonight at the 2024 Golden Globes. “Obviously, their story influenced the culture that we all grew up in and influenced the idea. But it’s fictional characters that are...

The late Mary Kay Letourneau‘s former partner Vili Fualaau is reacting to May December.
In the Todd Haynes movie, Natalie Portman plays Elizabeth Berry, an actress researching a married couple with a scandalous past similar to the real-life case of the former teacher and student.
Screenwriter Samy Burch cited the case as her inspiration. However, no one involved in the production apparently reached out to Vili, who inspired Charles Melton‘s Joe Yoo.

A review of tonight's "Mad Men" coming up just as soon as I get you a map to the powder room... "I had a plan, which was no plans!" -Richard Early in "The Forecast," Don gets into an argument with his realtor Melanie, who can't be bothered to conceal her disgust with her client. As they study the barren living room tableau created by Marie Calvet's thievery, Don insists that it's a selling point, because potential buyers can more easily imagine their own furniture in the space. Melanie dismissively wonders if he's ever sold an apartment, and in a later conversation suggests, "this place reeks of failure." Don again shrugs off her contempt and says, "I have a good feeling about things." In a way, Don is proven right, since Melanie winds up selling the place at the asking price. But that empty apartment — and Don's reaction to realizing...

Georgia Fualaau was born behind bars, when her mother, Mary Kay Leoturneau was in prison, serving time for her relationship with her student, Vili Fualaau.
But now Georgia is 16, and her older sister, Audrey, is 17, and the teens are making their TV debut in their parents' exclusive interview with Barbara Walters on ABC's 20/20 on Friday.

Shocker, but Mary Key Letourneau and her teenage lover-turned-husband Vili Fualaau haven't had the easiest marriage. The two celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary this year and are opening up about their struggles in a new interview with Barbara Walters. While it's hard to believe Letourneau, who served seven and a half years behind bars for her affair with her then-13-year-old student, and Vili are still together ... it hasn't been a cake walk. "I don't think there's ever a full 10 good years of marriage," Fualaau says in a just-released quote from his sit-down with Walters. "You have your ups and downs in marriages. But, you know, what matters is how you pull through all the bad times." The bad times for them include Letourneau's time in prison and Vili's battle with alcoholism and depression. "The wedding -- it was fun to plan," Mary Kay adds. "Any bride-to-be loves the planning part.

It's been almost 20 years since a 34-year-old Mary Kay Letourneau started a sexual relationship with her then 13-year-old student Vili Fualaau. She served seven and a half years in prison for their lurid affair -- but the two remained together after she got out. The controversial couple tied the knot on May 20, 2005 and are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary with a brand new Barbara Walters interview airing April 10 on "20/20." See What Vili Said About "Ups and Downs" of Their Marriage! While clips from the sit down are expected later this week, a press release for the special says the couple will talk about "what makes their marriage work," as Mary Kay also opens up about her desire to teach again and wishes to have...

This article is the eighth in Slackerwood's second series about the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (Tami) video library. For an overview of the Tami site, refer to this article in the first series.
"They say Mary Kay does not play favorites. That's not true. They do. We're all favorites!"
-– Fictional Mary Kay Cosmetics beauty consultant Susan Anderson
It's tempting to mock the subject of this month's Tami Flashback videos, Mary Kay Cosmetics. After all, Mary Kay epitomizes the beauty-industrial complex, which is built on the absurd and often cruel practice of telling women they aren't attractive unless they conform to conventional standards of beauty.
But this article is not about the way our culture treats women; it's about Tami videos. So I'll refrain from mocking the Dallas-based cosmetics giant (it will be a challenge) and focus on three of its corporate films from the late Seventies and early Eighties.

abstew here. Dame Judi Dench returned to theaters this weekend with the Oscar-buzzing Philomena. (She gets Oscar buzz for nearly everything she's in. She even makes it happen with James Bond films!)
I had a teacher that used to say
Ask me my three favorite actresses and the answer is: Judi Dench, Judi Dench, Judi Dench.
And as great as Dame Judi is in the film, Steve Coogan (who also adapted the screenplay) is equally strong as the investigative reporter helping Philomena, Martin Sixsmith. The two play off each other well in a salty, sweet relationship.
There's a scene in the film which is bound to catch the attention of cinephiles...
They enter the convent where Philomena's son was taken from her ('The Sisters of No Mercy,' as Sixsmith snarkly calls it) to investigate what happened. On the wall in the waiting room is an autographed photo of actress Jane Russell.

Yes you read that right -- in honor of the 50th anniversary of contributing sponsor Mary Kay, the traditional red carpet at this year's Dallas International Film Festival (Diff) opening night was replaced with Mary Kay's favored pink. The evening featured a public service announcement-style video produced by the Dallas-based company to promote their "Don't Look Away" campaign, which focuses on ending domestic violence.
In addition to the film stars and filmmakers to walk the carpet, which you can see after the jump, several festival dignitaries were also in attendance including Dallas Film Society (Dfs) CEO Lee Papert and Dfs board chair Lynn McBee. Emmy nominee and Dallas television series producer Ken Topolsky was accompanied by Janis Burklund, Director of the Dallas Film Commission (seen above), and spoke about the receptiveness of the Dallas residents to film and television production in their community.
