This article contains spoilers for season 1 of Shadow and Bone
Based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, Netflix’s fantasy series Shadow and Bone is set in a world where a shadowy vale full of monsters known as The Fold divides the land. The country of Ravka suffers the most from this division. Not only is the country split in half by The Fold, but other countries like Fjerda and Shu-Han have used The Fold as an excuse to declare war on Ravka. Because of threats from The Fold and outside it, East and West Ravka put a lot of resources into their military – the First Army made up of humans and the Second Army made up of matter manipulators known as Grisha.

YA fantasy adaptations tend to be dense in mythology and self-seriousness, with so many lands and lineages and plot turns that the newbie viewer might need a drink, or at least a thorough set of recaps. “Shadow and Bone,” returning to Netflix for Season 2 (a feat in itself these days), has all of the standard intricacies. Between Ravka and Fjerda, the Grisha and the Shu, the Barrell and the Fold, there’s a lot to keep track of, and the task can be daunting for novices to navigate.
But “Shadow and Bone” has an ace in the hole that the cardsharps of the Crow Club would appreciate. It rarely forgets to have fun, a quality that can easily get lost amid the spells and brooding that often characterize such enterprises. The series has a swashbuckling spirit and lively wit. It has clever heist plots and barroom brawls. Even as it...

Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone” Season 2 will continue to immerse viewers into the fictional fantasy world created by Leigh Bardugo, author of the “Shadow and Bone” trilogy and the “Six of Crows” duology.
Landing on the streamer March 16, the second season of the YA fantasy series adapts both “Siege and Storm” and “Ruin and Rising” from Bardugo’s trilogy while sprinkling in elements from the “Six of Crows” duology. New characters from both parts of the Grishaverse enter the story this round as well, including Tolya Yul-bataar (Lewis Tan), Tamar Kir-bataar (Anna Leong Brophy), Sturmhond aka Nikolai Lantsov (Patrick Gibson) and Wylan Hendricks (Jack Wolfe).
Season 1 laid a complex foundation for the elaborate universe that houses this story, and for those that need a refresher on what exactly happened in the first season, look no further. We’ll do our best to summarize, from the intricacies to the adventures.

Yellow Submarine is a cult classic animated film featuring the blue meanies and music from The Beatles. Decades later, Disney wanted to remake the classic film but later scrapped the project for several reasons. While it would have been intriguing to see a modern take on this film, it’s for the best that Disney didn’t move forward with this.

Contains Spoilers for Shadow and Bone
A young orphan woman with the power to summon the sun; her childhood best friend, a brave and tireless soldier willing to die for her; the all powerful ‘Darkling’ general who wants her to rule by his side – this is the love triangle at the centre of Netflix’s Shadow and Bone and it’s a suitably fizzy one.
But while the central plot, the political machinations, magic and the introduction of ‘The Fold’ are all key parts of what makes this show – an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s books – a compelling watch, by the end it’s a pointy-faced gangster with a limp who steals the show.
Kaz Brekker, played by Freddy Carter, is entirely lawless, motivated by money (but doesn’t have very much of it) and has no special powers. Even his gang – Inej (Amita Suman) the knife-expert, acrobat and master of stealth,...

Seaside shenanigans ensue after an apparent hit-and-run accident in this slapdash, mildly amusing thriller
In this Blackpool-set thriller, semi-retired wide boy Greg (Craig Kelly) is feeling bored and stifled by the routine of fatherhood with an infant daughter and a constantly critical wife, Gemma (Maimie McCoy). On Halloween night, his brother Dan shows up claiming to have killed the son of local gangster queenpin Miss Ferguson in a hit-and-run accident. Desperate, Dan begs for Greg’s help.
But hold on a sec – is this all a staged scam, designed to jolt Greg into appreciating the pleasures of everyday life, as if the MacGuffin in David Fincher’s The Game were a rehab intervention? Or perhaps it’s all a hallucination or vision, given the early references to Greg’s putative psychic powers and tendency to smoke skunk?...

Though each illuminating British TV across the past three decades, brothers Craig and Dean Lennox Kelly hadn’t acted alongside one another before on screen, until now. The Lancashire born siblings, known for their work on the likes of Queer As Folk and Shameless, respectively, both excel in this gritty and suspenseful British thriller, that examines just what lengths we’d go to in the name of family.
Craig Kelly plays Greg, a new father, he’s worn-out, fed-up and in need of excitement in his life. Though he couldn’t quite have anticipated it coming in the form of a visit from his brother Dan (Dean Lennox Kelly) in the middle of the night with nothing but a frantic expression on his face, and a body in the boot of his car. The pair set off into the night, as Greg ponders whether a lifetime changing nappies may just be preferable after-all.

Need a good laugh, but only got an hour and a half? Might we recommend this little lot...
I’m of the firm belief that films work most effectively when their runtime is 90 minutes or less. It forces an economy of story and dialogue which propels the film into its best self. No bloated middle, extended ending, or wasted stories here. This goes double for comedies. They should never outstay their welcome. But they seem to be getting longer, as we recently pointed out here.
So to refresh your movie comedy palette, here are 25 films that are 90 minutes or under. I’ve tried to avoid the more obvious ones, and shine a light on those comedies which might have gone a bit unappreciated over the years, but are well worth a hour and a half of your time. This lean runtime isn’t a guarantee of greatness of course,...

It ended the only way that Shameless could. With a car on fire, a pub-load of punters and families partying, a police chase and the overwhelming message that even in the worst situations and with the worst people, there is always something holding us together. Family matters.
Paul Abbott's comedy drama has spanned an impressive 11 series and despite many cast departures, the show has maintained a loyal audience and tonight's (May 28) finale delivered a treat for those who have stuck with the show from the very start.
Anne-Marie Duff, Dean Lennox Kelly, Elliott Tittensor, Jody Latham and Kelli Hollis all returned for one last jaunt around the Chatsworth Estate, while the episode managed to squeeze in a birth, a funeral, an extended Frank Gallagher rant about overpaid footballers and technology-obsessed kids and a brilliant line about Jesus ("He never had a wife. Robert Zemeckis doesn’t want to play any more. Coming off of his acclaimed but low-scoring Denzel Washington feature Flight, Zemeckis has crossed another hotly anticipated film off his list: the remake of the Beatles animated feature Yellow Submarine.
Disney pulled the plug on Zemeckis’s proposed motion-capture version of Yellow Submarine awhile back, but there was still talk about Zemeckis shopping the film around to other companies. With a cast that was to include Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell as the voices of the Fab Four, the film should have started production in December 2011. Now, in an interview with Total Film (via Moviehole), Zemeckis has officially sunk the project:

For a while, many people were upset at the prospect of Robert Zemeckis creating an updated, 3D-animated version of The Beatles’ animated film, “Yellow Submarine”. Well, now that his “Mars Needs Moms” bombed at the box office, making less than $7 million while it took $150 million to make the film, Disney has decided not to take any chances and has effectively severed all ties with the “Yellow Submarine” remake, according to ScreenCrave and The Hollywood Reporter. The film, which had already been cast with Dean Lennox Kelly as John Lennon, Cary Elwes as George Harrison, Peter Serafinowicz as Paul McCartney and Adam Campbell as Ringo Starr, was going to be [...]...

Disney have pulled the plug on Robert Zemeckis’ planned motion capture Yellow Submarine remake. The director-producer’s latest mo-cap film, Mars Needs Moms, which he produced, opened this weekend in the Us and has been condemned as one of the year’s biggest box office flops. A concerned Disney have now shelved their plans to remake Beatles film Yellow Submarine amid concerns regarding the mo-cap process. This despite the film having already been cast, with Cary Elwes as George Harrison, Dean Lennox Kelly as John Lennon,...

You can close the book on Robert Zemeckis,’s motion capture story as his next project Yellow Submarine has officially been canned. According to THR, Disney has decided to pull the plug on the project due to its recent motion capture flop Mars Needs Moms (the film only generated $7 million at the box office on a $170 million budget). But wait, for those who are still holding out that this project could happen, there is a slight chance that it could as Zemeckis now has the chance to move to another studio.
Still the film had its problems even before the project ever got off the ground. From budget issues to Zemeckis pushing back dates to for key presentations, the film never had what it needed to officially start filming. Among the budgetary problems and scheuling conflicts, there was concerns within Disney about the look of motion capture, especially the way human characters are depicted,...

If it wasn't bad enough that Disney closed its ImageMovers Digital studio and that its last project, the $150 million Mars Needs Moms, absolutely bombed at the box office, now we learn that The House of Mouse is pulling the plug on Robert Zemeckis' Yellow Submarine project, a remake of the trippy 1968 Beatles animated flick.
As The Hollywood Reporter reports, the disastrous $6.9M opening for Mars Needs Moms basically sunk the Yellow Submarine project. But now Zemeckis can shop the project to other studios.
When Zemeckis first announced Submarine, it was reported that the Beatles would be played by Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz, and Adam Campbell and would use motion-capture technology, as seen in other ImageMovers Digital projects such as The Polar Express and Mars Needs Moms. The project already had the backing of the Beatles' Apple Corps, which controls the rights to the group's catalog.

Director Robert Zemeckis' planned 3-D motion-capture remake of "Yellow Submarine," the classic psychedelic animated flick from The Beatles, is no longer going forward.
The Hollywood Reporter cites the $6.9 million opening for the $150 million budgeted "Mars Needs Moms," which Zemeckis produced, as the reason behind "Yellow Submarine's" cancellation at Disney, though Deadline reports that the project was terminated weeks earlier. Despite the project's death at Disney, Zemeckis is free to shop it around to other studios if he so chooses.

After much deliberation Disney have put a kibosh on plans to remake the 1968 Beatles’ animation Yellow Submarine.
The reboot - which was being developed by ImageMovers Digital and had Robert Zemeckis on directing duties - has ceased to a halt before filming even got off the ground.
Up until now casting talks had been in full swing with that Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell, all associated with the forthcoming project.
It has been suggested that the poor performance of Zemeckis’ Mars Needs Moms, is linked to the film’s sudden cancellation. But sources tell ComingSoon.net that the official decision was made quietly several months ago.
Based on The Beatles’ song, the original 1968 animation featured art direction by Heinz Edelmann.
The story is set in an undersea paradise inhabited by hippies whose harmonious lifestyles are protected by Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

There are positives to be taken from Disney’s decision to halt production on The Yellow Submarine, Robert Zemeckis’ motion captured animated remake of the psychedelic 1968 Beatles film that was to star computerized versions of the famous band members as lead characters – and that’s – it will hopefully convince Zemeckis to make his long-awaited return to live action film-making.
The Back to the Future and Forest Gump helmer has not made a live action film in the ten years since the excellent Cast Away and has instead staked his career on the progress of the creepy, dead-eyed motion capture technology with the triple headers The Polar Express, Beowulf and A Christmas Carol – and of which The Yellow Submarine would have been the fourth.
Originally planned for a big media showcase during the 2012 London Olympics, The Yellow Submarine was gearing up to star Carey Elwes, Peter Serafinowicz, Dean Lennox Kelly, Adam Campbell (as George,...

Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forest Gump) has been working on the remake of the classic Beatles film "Yellow Submarine," but has been running into budget issues. Now that Zemeckis' "Mars Needs Moms" film bombed in theaters, Disney wants nothing to do with "Yellow Submarine" and considers the project dead. Last year it was announced that Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell have been cast to play the members of Beatles. The plan was to use 16 Beatles songs in the film, which was to use cutting-edge motion-capture technology similar to Zemeckis' "Beowulf," "A Christmas Carol" and "Mars Needs Moms." Zemeckis is now free to shop the movie to other studios, but word is that he will likely abandon the project and will instead direct a live-action film.

The Walt Disney Co. has scrapped filmmaker Robert Zemeckis’ planned next project for the studio - the CG animated mo-cap remake of the classic Beatles film "Yellow Submarine" says Heat Vision.
Zemeckis first set up the project in mid-2009 and early last year it was revealed that Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell would play the Fab Four in the film via mo-cap technology that Zemeckis employed in the likes of "Beowulf" and "A Christmas Carol". The plan was also to use sixteen Beatles songs and they have secured the cooperation of Apple Corps.
The project has hit a number of roadblocks in recent months from budget issues and delays, to the downturn in box-office for mo-cap films. The news has been hammered home by this past weekend's disastrous opening for the Zemeckis-produced $150 million-budget "Mars Needs Moms!". Zemeckis is likely to segue to a new live-action...

Robert Zemeckis won't set sail with his motion capture version of The Beatles' Yellow Submarine, at least not at Walt Disney Pictures.
After the Zemeckis-produced mo-cap Mars Needs Moms had an opening weekend gross of just $6.9 million dollars -- on an estimated budget of $150 million (and that's before marketing) -- Disney didn't see much sense in continuing to develop the expensive movie project.
With Disney now officially not interested in making Yellow Submarine, Zemeckis is free to approach other movie studios and see if they would be interested in partnering up on it. That said, the dismal results of Mars Needs Moms will likely make that a long drive up a tall mountain.
It also means that the four actors who had already been cast to provide the voices of the Fab Four, Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell, are out of jobs.

As Mars Needs Moms bombs, and Disney pulls out of the Yellow Submarine movie, is performance capture – as seen in the likes of A Christmas Carol and The Polar Express – on its way out?
Heralded in some quarters as the future of movies, the performance capture system that's been spearheaded by director Robert Zemeckis has, to date, a couple of big hits under its belt. The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol are the most notable, although Beowulf hardly did shabby numbers, too.
If you're unfamiliar with the term 'performance capture', it's used to describe the mapping of an actor's work into a computer. Thus, they get to wear a special suit, then they act a scene out as usual. This gets captured, and then, at its most basic, an animated version of them ends up in the final product. Think Tom Hanks in the aforementioned The Polar Express, where...

Disney has backed out of their plan to make "Yellow Submarine", but it has nothing to do with "Mars Needs Moms!" performance. The Hollywood Reporter (THR) runs a story that the studio kills the remake of the classic Beatles film to be produced and directed by Robert Zemeckis after his produced 3-D animation failed at box office on its debut weekend, but some insiders have denied it.
The insiders tell Deadline Hollywood that the decision was made months ago, before "Mars Needs Moms!" tanked. The site, however, does confirm THR's scoop that Zemeckis is now allowed to shop the project to another studio.
Moreover according to THR, "Yellow Submarine" has already faced a few issues before the weekend. There were budget problems, and a meeting scheduled between Zemeckis and the Beatles heirs had been rescheduled several times, before it was finally scrapped in December 2010.

There aren't too many people who were looking forward to Robert Zemeckis' motion capture animated rendition of The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine." Actually, was there anybody? Whoever they were, those people must be very disappointed with the news that just broke a couple of hours ago. This past weekend Walt Disney Animation Studio released "Mars Needs Moms," a $150 million dollar budgeted project that bombed, only scraping in $6.8 million. What did Disney decide to do after that? They told Zemeckis to hit the road with his "Yellow Submarine" film. The project was already crawling towards production, boasting a cast that included Cary Elwes, Peter Serafinowicz, Dean Lennox Kelly and Adam Campbell. It's not like the cast and crew wasn't in place, though the project was said to be already encountering problems. One of them happened to be the budget (go figure) along with consistently delaying a presentation to the Beatles heirs.

Talk about awkward. The last headline below this one [1] is an endorsement of mocap filmmaking from Steven Spielberg. But the major industry talk today that wasn't centered on SXSW was all about how the mocap film Mars Needs Moms absolutely tanked in its debut weekend. There is some significant fallout from that failure: Disney has passed on the mocap remake of the Beatles' Yellow Submarine, which Robert Zemeckis had planned to make this year. THR [2] makes it sound like the low first weekend returns for Mars Needs Moms ($6.9m against over $150m -- this one is a fiasco) were just the latest issue with the project, saying that there were budget problems and that a meeting scheduled between Robert Zemeckis and the various Beatles heirs had been rescheduled several times, then finally scrapped in December. So, bascially, "don't call us, and we're definitely not going to call you?" (Deadline [3] explicitly...

When your film is in the top 10 worst wide openings of all-time, there is reason to panic. Mars Needs Moms, with a $150 million budget, debuted to a disastrous $6.88 million dollars at the box office last weekend, and now Walt Disney Company is rethinking their investments. THR reports that the company has canned Mars producer Robert Zemeckis‘ motion capture remake of the Beatles film Yellow Submarine.
Zemeckis, after directing such classics as Back to the Future and Forrest Gump, has been on a motion capture binge, directing The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, and Beowulf. He was prepping Submarine for a 2012 release and had Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell attached as our Beatles. Zemeckis even acquired the rights to use 16 of their songs.

"All You Need Is Love?" No, you also need a studio.
Walt Disney Pictures has decided to stay on dry land and scrapped Robert Zemeckis' planned remake of "Yellow Submarine," the 1968 animated film featuring the Beatles and their adventures in Pepperland, a paradise under the sea, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The decision to drop "Submarine" was apparently made on the wake of this past weekend's disastrous box office returns for the $150 million-budgeted "Mars Needs Moms," produced by Zemeckis, which grossed only $6.9 million.
The bombing of "Mars" was the final nail in the coffin for the studio's increasingly uneasy relationship with Zemeckis and his love of motion capture animation, a filmmaking technique (often described as "creepy" when it comes to human characters) he's been exploring exclusively since 2004's "The Polar Express."
Disney had been starting to get a little iffy on the process since the disappointing box office returns of 2009's "A Christmas Carol.

It was inevitable. Following the abysmal box-office take of the Robert Zemeckis-produced, Simon Wells-directed Mars Needs Mom, reportedly budgeted at $150m but taking in $6.9m this past weekend, the Walt Disney Co. has canceled Zemeckis' next project for the studio, a remake of The Beatles' 1968 animated feature Yellow Submarine, The Hollywood Reporter has announced. Not that Yellow Submarine had just been sailing along. The Reporter adds that "there were budget issues and a key presentation Zemeckis was to have made before the Beatles heirs kept being pushed back. A December date for the confab was scrapped and never rescheduled." Additionally, Disney had shut down Zemeckis’ ImageMovers studio in May 2010. While Richard Ayoade’s Submarine soars to great critical heights before its release on Friday there’s bad news for Robert Zemeckis’s planned remake of the 1968 animated Beatles movie Yellow Submarine.
THR have just reported that due to the low box office haul of its latest animation Mars Needs Moms, which Zemeckis had a producer’s credit on, Disney have dropped his Yellow Submarine project and it now languishes in murky waters with an increasingly unlikely chance that it’ll be rescued by another studio willing to take on the project.
What relevance this will have to the Spielberg/Jackson fronted The Adventure of Tintin is unclear – Mars Needs Moms is nowhere near as valuable or recongisable as Herge’s classic creation and while I thought that Mars Needs Moms didn’t need to be in mad with CG performance capture this may be a sign that audiences are tired of it too.

Director Robert Zemeckis revealed that the "Yellow Submarine" remake is still on! During the "Back to the Future" 25th Anniversary celebration, Moviefone caught up with the director and he said the film was "all ahead full" but wouldn't give any other details.
The psychedelic 1968 animated flick was based on the music by the Beatles and told the story of Old Fred who meets up with the quartet and travels in a yellow submarine to Pepperland. The big bad? The Blue Meanies -- I'm wondering who will play them?
The new Walt Disney remake will feature Dean Lennox Kelly as John Lennon, Adam Campbell as Ringo Starr, Peter Serafinowicz as Paul McCartney, and Cary Elwes will be George Harrison.
The film is supposed to be released in 2012.

It was announced earlier this year that Robert Zemeckis would direct a 3D motion-capture adaptation of the Beatles’ The Yellow Submarine and had recruited Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell to portray George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr respectively.
Elwes, in an interview conducted with MTV at the New York Comic-Con this weekend, provided an update on the film, saying production is expected to commence in April of next year.
He then went on to comment about the motion-capture experience, saying:
“It’s more than a voice. We actually have to perform the roles [...] If you know much about motion-capture, it’s not just voice-over work. You really have to perform the role.”

For all of the hubbub that surrounded Robert Zemeckis' remake of Yellow Submarine, we haven't heard anything about the project since January when Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell were cast as George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, respectively. Since then, Disney shut down Zemeckis' mo-cap workshop in order cut costs. So what of The Beatles? One of it's stars says that the project is still alive and that it will start up next year. MTV caught up with Elwes at this past weekend's New York Comic Con, where he was promoting Saw 3D, and the actor announced that the plan is to begin production next April. In addition to providing the voice Elwes will also be putting on the mo-cap suit, but couldn't talk about his performance too in depth because of a non-disclosure agreement. Cary Elwes (Saw 3D) is going to be voicing the role of George Harrison next year in a 3D motion captured reinvention of that old cartoon, which some yield as a classlic, Yellow Submarine. Robert Zemeckis is on directorial duties and besides Elwes, Paul McCartney will be voiced by Peter Serafinowicz (the voice of Darth Maul), Ringo will be voiced by Adam Campbell and John Lennon will get the vocal treatment by Dean Lennox Kelly (Faq About Time Travel). The movie will be a mo-cap event so the actors will not only be voicing their roles, they will also be performing them as well. Personally I never saw the original flick, and truth be told I have zero interest in going to see this. While I like the Beatles music, I wouldn’t class myself as a fan and I wonder, in particular, how many Beatles fans will look upon...
