Before disgraced NFL star Aaron Hernandez hanged himself in his prison cell early Wednesday, in Massachusetts, he was convicted or acquitted of killing three other people — whose families each had their own reactions to Hernandez’s death.
“I’m not happy about his death. It’s actually a shame,” Ernesto Abreu told the Boston Globe. “Any loss of life is a shame. I believe in leaving things in God’s hands.”
Abreu’s 29-year-old son, Daniel de Abreu, was killed in 2012 along with Safiro Furtado, 28, one of Daniel’s friends. Prosecutors alleged that Hernandez fatally shot both men in a drive-by,...

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

The always resourceful FilmmakerIQ offers fantastic courses in filmmaking, and its latest is now available. "Everything You Need to Know about Aspect Ratio" covers the evolution of cinema's big screen and how it has transformed shape. At its most basic, aspect ratio describes the relationship between an image's width and height. John Hess hosts the history lesson, leading us through the very first films and the work of photographer William Kennedy Dickson who worked for Thomas Edison. The early aspect ratio standard became 4:3, but changed in the late 1930s after sound was introduced to motion pictures. The 1950s television craze saw another shift in cinema: widescreen. Even if you flunked math in high school, Hess does a fine job...

What's Jack Nicholson's secret? Maybe it's the eyebrows, hovering like ironic quotation marks over every line reading. Maybe it's the hooded eyes, which hold the threat of danger or the promise of joviality -- you're never sure which. Same with that sharklike grin. Or maybe it's the voice, which has evolved over the years from a thin sneer to a deep rumble, but is always precisely calibrated to provoke a reaction. Put them all together, and they say: "I am a man to be reckoned with. Ignore me at your peril." Nicholson, who turns 75 on April 22, is often criticized for relying on his bag of tricks, for just showing up and doing Jack Nicholson (though indeed, he often seems to have been hired precisely for that purpose). But he's also capable of burrowing deep into a character, finding his wounded heart, and revealing the ugly truth without fear or vanity.

Nat Faxon, Alexander Payne, Jim Rash Nat Faxon, Jim Rash, Alexander Payne: The Descendants Oscar 2012 Q&A Pt.1 Q. Alexander, I wondered if you would translate what you said in Hawaiian in that nice tribute to your mom, but also in doing that, talk about how you adapted the Hawaiian culture, especially using the music in telling the story. A. (Payne) I'm so happy to correct you. It wasn't Hawaiian, it was Greek. … Essentially that's "I love you very much" in Greek. As for, as you say, adapting Hawaiian culture and folding it into the film and using the music, thanks for the question. In retrospect I have to say, yeah, I am proud of the fact that I was able to spend a number of months in Hawaii before shooting, using Kaui Hart Hemmings, the novelist, as a guy opening the initial doors for me to get it...

Fittingly enough, since the Oscars® just took place, this week sees the release of the eagerly anticipated "The French Connection" and its sequel "French Connection II." The first Academy Award-winning crime thriller is helmed by William Friedkin, known for several other critically acclaimed films like "The Exorcist" and "Bug." Friedkin did not direct the sequel, instead, John Frankenheimer ("The Manchurian Candidate," Reindeer Games") took over the reigns. In "The French Connection" Hackman stars as "Popeye" Doyle, a brash New York City detective who uncovers a heroin-smuggling operation. The car chase under the elevated train tracks is movie legend. Another film which was nominated for two Academy Awards was 1987's "Ironweed" starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, two veterans who have stood the test of Hollywood. Streep was last in the critically acclaimed "Doubt" alongside Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams and Jack Nicholson kicked the bucket along with Morgan Freeman in "The Bucket List.
