[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS Season 21 Episode 8 “Heartless.”] “Even if all your choices are bad, you have to pick the best bad choice because that’s the only choice you’re going to have to survive,” says Gary Cole, explaining why his character, NCIS Special Agent in Charge Alden Parker, made the split-second decision to pose as a heart surgeon in the latest episode. The actor told us more about filming the adrenaline-pumping installment in our weekly after show NCIS: Case Closed. Parker allowed himself to be kidnapped along with a real cardiac specialist, Navy Commander Clara Logan (Christina Kirk), who was being taken to operate on Colombian drug kingpin Carlos Savina (Juan Javier Cardenas). Suspenseful storyline aside, the hour also gave us the opportunity to learn more about Parker, who almost passed out when the patient’s chest was opened up. “...

Sorry About Your Wife, Reuben: Filmmaker John Hamburg Looks Back on 20 Years with ‘Along Came Polly’
It’s been 20 years since senior Model Un delegate Polly Prince wandered back into the life of unlucky-in-love insurance adjuster Reuben Feffer.
Jennifer Aniston charmed the pants off Ben Stiller’s persnickety everyman as the chaotically seductive title character in “Along Came Polly”: filmmaker John Hamburg’s raunchy odd coupling about a New Yorker who catches his wife (a perfectly loath-able Debra Messing) cheating on him with a scuba instructor (a hysterical and jacked Hank Azaria) during their tropical honeymoon. Back in the city, with the misguided help of his friend and former child star Sandy Lyle (the late Philip Seymour Hoffman at his funniest), Reuben runs into blast from the past Polly, who may or may not be the real love of his life, just two weeks later.

“To have pain is to have certainty,” essayist Elaine Scarry wrote in The Body in Pain in 1985. “To hear about pain is to have doubt.” Even that shared certainty can’t quite quell the doubts among Infinite Life’s characters, visitors to a California clinic for people living with chronic pain. Sofi (Christina Kirk) is pretty certain that her bladder condition, which has decimated her sexual health, is the worst pain anyone there has experienced. Nelson (Pete Simpson) insists that his colon disease hurts worse than childbirth. No one has a verbal metric to accurately compare their pain so even sharing their experiences with other sufferers can be lonely. How can anyone know the silent pain of a body only you have ever lived in?
That’s one of the central questions at the tender, discomfiting heart of Infinite Life, but the knowledge that this is a new Annie Baker...

The Mysterious Benedict Society is unveiling some new characters as Haley Joel Osment joins the show for its Season 2 finale episode dropping December 7. After escaping Dr. Curtain’s (Tony Hale) compound, the Society retreats to Number Two’s (Kristen Schaal) family home in Luxembourg, where she reconnects with her mother and siblings. Among those siblings is Osment’s One Two, a relentlessly cheery young man who is loyal to his family and the favored sibling to an absurd degree. (Credit: Disney/Tina Thorpe) Meanwhile, Harriet Sansom Harris plays Number Two’s mother and Christina Kirk portrays her sister. Viewers get a peek at the family dynamic in the clip, above, as Number Two asks them for help. “You have absconded with a mastermind?” Number Two’s mother asks. “An evil mastermind, yes,” Number Two confirms. What ensues is some good family bickering between One and Number Two as well as the Society.

In the age of peak TV, there’s a lot of bad television out there. But rather than take the time to highlight what everyone should already be forgetting, IndieWire is examining the heartbreaking misses of 2017; the shows that felt like they had something special — either in concept, talent, or early episodes — but failed to fulfill that promise.
For the shows that weren’t cancelled, hope rings eternal. TV is a medium that allows for development, improvement, and the virtual erasure of bad first impressions. The shows below might be a long way from getting good, but their break bad hurt enough that even for the most disappointing, we still hope for the best.
And if you like any shows on the list, then good luck and godspeed. You found something there that we only wish we could have seen. Maybe next year.

The concept behind Powerless is a good one.
With so many superhero shows on the air, and with said superheroes and villains doing so much damage to the cities where they live day in and day out, this fun comedy examines the people who live there in the wake of all that action.
Unfortunately, with episodes pulled at the last minute, new runs replaced with reruns, and an office theme versus a full on life theme, Powerless had a tough time finding its footing.
Today, Powerless Executive Producer Patrick Schumacker took to Twitter to share some bad news.
#Powerless will not air this week or next. This, I know for sure. I can guess some other things but they're not good. Thanks for watching.

MaryAnn’s quick take… My anger that women filmmakers doing a horror anthology is seen as a novelty almost overshadows my disappointment that these short films aren’t very scary. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies by and about women
I’m “biast” (con): I’m not much of a horror fan
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I’m looking forward to the time when the work of four women filmmakers coming together in a horror anthology is not considered a novelty, but we do not live in that world yet. So that is the motif that connects the segments of Xx: they were written and directed by women. (Imagine how ridiculous it would be to try to sell an anthology on the fact that all the segments were made by men!) I’m always glad to see women filmmakers working,...

To begin, we must acknowledge a painful fact: omnibus features are only as strong as their weakest link, and it’s clear that production company Xyz Films learned from its past. Xx, thankfully better than the company’s recent Holidays, features four female-directed psychological horror shorts that in large part take on motherhood, domestic life, and parenting. Perhaps it should have stopped there, with two strong stand-outs (Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, with The Birthday Party, and Karyn Kusama’s Her Only Living Son), the decent The Box (by Jovanka Vuckovic), and the weak link, Roxanne Benjamin’s Don’t Fall. It was as if the best three followed a carefully prescribed assignment; Don’t Fall attempts to jam a feature’s worth of suspense into a short that needed a lot more build-up. Also at odds with the tone is Sofia Carrillo’s beautiful, gothic interstitials of cracked porcelain...

Xx – an all-female directed horror anthology – couldn’t push against genre representation at a better time. You’d think those involved would come out fiery, focused and full of appropriate rage given current gender voicelessness. This was a chance for horror to champion female filmmakers, yet assertions are tepid at best. Even past the failed settling of gender scores, Xx lacks horror establishment of the basest engagement. Only one chapter stands out (victorious because of competition), while three more efforts drag their feet without enthusiasm. No statement is made, no mic is dropped and no lasting message lingers past the credits. Enjoy another mixed bag of spooky stories that do no bumping in any night.
Please note, such disinterest isn’t because my feeble male brain can’t comprehend a different perspective. Three of the four main characters are mothers, all caught in family dilemmas. That’s not where my disconnection stems.

Last night, or tonight (depending on where you are while reading this), NBC premiered its new DC Comics show Powerless. The response was, well, underwhelming, with most people citing the main problem as a lack of laughs – which is obviously an issue for a workplace sitcom. It’s important not to judge a book by its cover though, and for now, there’s enough potential here that it’s worth tuning in next week to see where the series goes.

As the Grammys and the Oscars up the glitz factor on network TV, February brings a diverse array of options for those of us suffering from awards fatigue. HBO bids adieu to a signature program while introducing two new ones; superheroes burst genre boundaries into workplace comedy and surreal psychodrama, respectively; and a nature-doc series returns to document the Earth's natural bounty before it vanishes in the next two to three years. Here's what you need to tune into over the next month.

Horror anthologies can be a tough feat to pull off, especially when you’re trying to pull together different filmmakers’ visions into one cohesive experience. That being said, Xx, which recently celebrated its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, succeeds in delivering four wildly distinct stories from several female directors, featuring the talents of Jovanka Vuckovic, Karyn Kusama, Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), and Roxanne Benjamin. Beyond just its historical significance, Xx stands out as one of the more successful anthologies we’ve seen as of late, regardless of the gender of its directors.
Xx starts off with Vuckovic’s contribution, The Box, which is based on a story of the same name by acclaimed author Jack Ketchum. In the segment, we follow Susan (Natalie Brown), a mother who watches helplessly as an unknown force literally consumes her family after her son, Danny (Peter DaCunha), takes a peek inside...

If you thought The CW wrangling together four shows into a week-long crossover event was peak superhero TV, you probably won’t make it long into Powerless. Although the show isn’t particularly focused on any caped crusaders or men of steel, its lifeblood and humor thrives when its audience will understand why a Civil War dig on a DC Comics show is kind of funny. In reality, NBC’s new not-a-superhero superhero show means well, and has a few moments of clever comic book tie-in gags, but it’s as effective as a syringe of Joker Anti-Laughter Venom when it comes to the comedy department.
Charm City, a taint on the planet in comparison to Gotham according to Van Wayne (Alan Tudyk), is a place crawling with supervillains causing daily destruction and raining death down upon the innocent – and totally apathetic – citizenry.

NBC have released a new trailer for their forthcoming “non-superhero” superhero show Powerless, which stars Vanessa Hudgens, Danny Pudi, Ron Funches, Jennie Pierson, Alan Tudyk, and Christina Kirk.
Airing on February 2nd, Powerless sees Emily Locke (Hudgens) land her dream job as Director of Research and Development for Wayne Security in Charm City, home to super heroes and villains and citizens fed up with the collateral damage of their constant fighting.
Full of confidence and big ideas, Emily quickly learns that her aspirations far exceed those of her new boss and officemates, so it will be up to her to lead the team toward their full potential and the realization that you don’t need superpowers to be a hero.

After receiving rave reviews at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, it's finally time for fans to get a taste of DC's first comedy series - Powerless! The series stars Vanessa Hudgens (Grease: Live) as Emily Locke, an employee at Wayne Security, who will arrive at the company with high hopes of bettering the lives of the people that live in this crazy superpowered world. However, things, as they often do, don't exactly go according to plan when she meets her new boss, played by Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and her quirky co-workers, played by Danny Pudi (Community), Christina Kirk (A to Z), and Ron Funches (Undateable). Earlier today, NBC released three sneak peek clips from the season premiere, titled "Wayne or Lose," and fifteen promotional stills. Check out the clips below and keep scrolling for a huge batch of photos: "Wayne Or Lose" - 02/02/2017 (08:30Pm...

Two new promo spots have been released for NBC’s DC comedy series Powerless, and one of them makes a pretty big reveal. Alan Tudyk is playing Van Wayne… Bruce Wayne’s cousin. I love that! I’m sure there will be other fun connections like that as we learn more about the series.
The new series focuses on a quirky group of "exceedingly average" employees of Wayne Securities Research and Development company that comes up with new ideas and technologies to help average people survive in a world full of superheroes leaving a mess behind them every time they fight a battle.
The series also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Community's Danny Pudi, and A to Z's Christina Kirk. Here's the synopsis:

Xx is something we have mentioned back in 2013, which included a different line-up. Now, ahead of the Sundance 2017 premiere, we get a trailer to tease us on what we’re going to get!
Xx is a new all-female helmed horror anthology featuring four dark tales written and directed by fiercely talented women: Annie Clark (St. Vincent) rocks her directorial debut with The Birthday Party; Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, Girlfight) exorcises Her Only Living Son; Roxanne Benjamin (Southbound) screams Don’T Fall; and Jovanka Vuckovic (The Captured Bird) dares to open The Box. Award-winning animator Sofia Carrillo (La Casa Triste) wraps together four suspenseful stories of terror featuring a cast including Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool and Christina Kirk.
Hopefully, most of you reading this should be familiar with the talent behind the camera. Annie Clark is marking this project with her directorial debut but she is also known as St. Vincent.

The first trailer has been released for the horror anthology film Xx. This is a unique horror movie project as it's driven by four women directors. When talking about the importance of the project, producer Todd Brown said:
“One of the givens of so many horror films has been the objectification of young women, and we thought it was time for a different approach to scaring audiences and letting the female voice be heard.”
The result looks awesomely creepy! There are some crazy looking stories in this movie and they come along with some wonderfully nightmarish visuals. The film is set to screen at Sundance later this month and it's on my list of must-see films while I'm there. Here's the synopsis for the film including the names of the directors and the title of the film that each one directs in the anthology.

In what’s becoming something of an annual tradition, the latest anthology film is set for release next month: “Xx,” which follows the likes of “Holidays” and “Southbound” in assembling a team of directors to contribute individual stories to an omnibus project. With all four of its segments directed by women, “Xx” — as in, two x chromosomes — looks to distinguish itself from its predecessors. Watch the trailer below.

After the anthologies V/H/S and The ABCs of Death ran their course, it’s time to put horror in the proper hands. Xx offers four tales in the genre, all directed by females: Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), Karyn Kusama (whose The Invitation was one of 2016’s best films), Roxanne Benjamin (Southbound), and Jovanka Vuckovic (former editor of Rue Morgue magazine). Ahead of a Sundance premiere and February release, the first trailer has now arrived.
With a cast including Natalie Brown, Melanie Lynskey, Breeda Wool, and Christina Kirk, one can glean the tone of these four separate stories, as the trailer promises a bloody good time. For reference, Clark makes her directorial debut with The Birthday Party, while Kusama helms Her Only Loving Son, Benjamin is behind Don’t Fall, and Vuckovic directs The Box, while Sofia Carrillo has done animated transitions for the film.

Superhero movies/TV shows always focus on the ones with the powers, but what about those other, lowly people? The ones trying to get through their nine-to-five shift without their building collapsing onto them? That’s the basis, in part, for NBC’s DC Comics comedy Powerless, a workplace sitcom with an added superpowered twist, which is set to premiere early next month. To announce its not-so-supersized debut, the peacock station released the show’s first official trailer this week, and you can check it out up above.
Starring Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Danny Pudi (Community), Christina Kirk (A to Z), Ron Funches (Undatable), Kate Miccuci (Don’t Think Twice) and Josh Fadem (30 Rock), Powerless follows the employees of Wayne Security, a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises, that specializes in products for the defenseless, Aka the powerless, to make them feel safer.
