Producers Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle have optioned Hermann Hesse’s “Demian” and plan to adapt the novel into a feature film. Nick Kreiss (“Afraid”) has penned a screenplay with cinematographer Andre Lascaris (“About Alex”) and under the supervision of the Hesse estate.
The book was a bestseller in the U.S. and its story of spiritual enlightenment and self-discovery resonated first with readers in the post-World War I period and then later with members of the American counterculture of the 1960s, who embraced the novel yet again. It found favor with the likes of Timothy Leary and Colin Wilson, who became enthusiastic boosters of the Hesse canon. Kopeloff thinks the time is ripe for a new generation to rediscover “Demian.”
“We’re living in a digital age, where a lot of our lives are dictated by social media,” he says. “There’s an externalization of identity. This story is a fresh contrast.

Open Road Films is nearing a deal to acquire U.S. distribution rights to Oliver Stone‘s Edward Snowden movie, which will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Nsa whistleblower, an individual familiar with the negotiations has told TheWrap. Open Road chief Tom Ortenberg previously worked with Stone on Lionsgate's George W. Bush movie “W.,” and it was his relationship with the director that helped the company land the prestige project. Snowden was an Nsa contractor who leaked classified documents, prompting the media to both champion him as a whistleblower and call him a traitor. Stone's longtime collaborator Moritz Borman is teaming with Eric Kopeloff.

Exclusive: Around the same time that the Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour premieres at the New York Film Festival on Friday, studio heads will be reading the drama script that Oliver Stone and producing partner Moritz Borman have been working on about the hot-button subject of a leaker some call gutsy while others call a traitor. Stone will direct Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the role of the American who fled to Russia seeking asylum after making public more classified documents than anyone since Daniel Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam War.
The film starts in Munich in January, with Borman producing with Eric Kopeloff. Deadline revealed last month that Gordon-Levitt would play Snowden; he just played Philippe Petit in the Robert Zemeckis-directed The Long Walk for TriStar and now is shooting Xmas with Seth Rogen at Sony.

It is now 2012 and Natural Born Killers director Oliver Stone is still trying to re-find his footing. Savages is the latest brutally graphic film from a director that used to be known for stirring up controversy at the cinemas. His latest outing is mostly hollow shock-factor that rides on its gracious violence and over-use of sex and swearing to attempt to offset the viewer and make it feel as if they’re watching something new and original. Savages is far from either of those descriptors and it’s instead another drug-induced and blood-soaked popcorn affair that rides off of the strength of Benicio Del Toro.
Chon (Taylor Kitsch) and Ben (Aaron Johnson) are two smart men living in California; the pot central of the United States. Their combined strengths come from Chon’s literal physicality and Ben’s smarts, which when combined equals a perfect partnership when it comes to selling drugs to the masses.

Universal Studios have announced Oliver Stone’s latest ultra-violent crime drama Savages for Blu-Ray, starring Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, Benicio Del Toro and John Travolta.
Director Oliver Stone has had a hit-or-miss career. For every Natural Born Killers or Wall Street, he also makes World Trade Center or Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
Savages is his attempt to rekindle the flames from his Natural Born Killer days and in his attempt he has managed to come off as a cheap Tony Scott knockoff. There’s lots of grisly violence and quick jump-cuts, but no reason for doing so. His take on the drug war isn’t a horrible one, but far from being cinematic greatness that we used to expect from a filmmaker of Stone’s caliber.
Our very own Kristal Cooper summed it up well in her review of the film:

A film that Michael & I both enjoyed watching in the theater earlier this year was Oliver Stone’s Savages. Even if we thought that some of the film echoed some of the filmmaking style of the late Tony Scott, Savages is anchored by some great performances and its persistence to not shy away from some of the extreme violence. Universal is looking to release an Unrated version of the film which makes me wonder what the hell was cut out. Read below for the press release.

Cannes -- Capitalism: good or bad? He doesn't know the ultimate answer, but that doesn't stop Oliver Stone from speculating as to what's wrong with it.
"It seems not to be (working). We got drunk in 1987 ... then the system got worse. There's a tremendous gap between who made money and who didn't."
In short, the greed factor has multiplied, the helmer suggested.
Or as the main character Gordon Gekko puts it in the film, "Greed isn't just good; it got legal."
On the other hand, Stone put the accent in his responses on how the characters in his new movie deal with balancing their family attachments with their love of the money game.
To wit, Gekko is just coming out of jail at the beginning of the film, a broken man, with no money and no one to greet him.
A relaxed and forthcoming Stone was speaking Friday in Cannes...
