As of this writing Stephanie J. Block (“The Cher Show”) is the front-runner to win this year’s Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical with 16/5 odds after prevailing at the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. But the last time this Tony category went to a performance in a show that wasn’t nominated for Best Musical or Best Musical Revival was 2000 when Heather Headley won for “Aida.” “The Cher Show” received three nominations overall, but the other two were for costumes and lighting design, not in the top category. So is Stephanie as far out front as the Experts think she is?
In the biographical musical about the life of Cher, we see the legendary recording artist at three stages of her life, with three actresses portraying her as “Babe,” “Lady,” and “Star.” While the show overall received a mixed critical reception when it opened on Broadway back in December,...

"Don't you go in there, that's not safe in there. There's ghosts in that barn..." Arya has unveiled an official trailer for an indie black & white western drama titled The Divide, which is hitting select Us theaters next month. The Divide is the first feature film directed by veteran American actor Perry King, best known for his role in the 1980s television series "Riptide", on which he played detective Cody Allen. This time, he stars as an aging rancher with failing memory trying to keep from losing his mind & the farm. "Internal struggles, the realities of an unforgiving landscape, and the need to reconcile a long-ago tragedy collide to create the backdrop for this classic American Western." Along with Perry King, the cast of The Divide includes Sara Arrington, Bryan Kaplan, Levi Kreis, Luke Colombero, and Jack McGuinness. This looks like one of those strange lost-in-time, super melodramatic films that...

The plot in Jana Brown’s script revolved around Sam Kincaid (King), an aging rancher with a failing memory in a time when Alzheimer’s disease wasn’t well documented; his estranged and independent-minded daughter, Sarah (Bosch‘s Sara Arrington); and Luke (Bryan Kaplan), a ranch hand who finds himself in the midst of a family in crisis. Internal struggles, the realities of an unforgiving landscape and the need to reconcile a long-ago tragedy collide in the Western tale.

In his career, Levi Kreis has released a total of six albums. Not only does Kreis have four studio albums, a live album, and an album of demos under his belt, but he also has a shiny Tony Award somewhere at home. Of course, Kreis is too humble to let it all go to his head. In fact, Kreis needs to be reminded to look back some times to recognize his major successes. Kreis just released his newest studio album Imagine Paradise, and to positive reception. The album founded by Kickstarter allowed Kreis to channel fan support to make music after a four-year hiatus.

Levi Kreis is a rock star with an electric sound and vibe. With his most recent studio album Imagine Paradise, he channels a poptechnosoul sound that resembles that of Robin Thicke, George Michael, and Jamiroquai. Imagine Paradise is Kreis' fourth album, but his first in four years. After a brief hiatus, Kreis has made it clear with this Kickstarter founded record that he is back and stronger than ever.

Gee, Now That's Really A Shame
This week's news seemed to have an extra helping of gay guys doing dumb and/or self-serving things that, frankly, got on my nerves.
Leading off the idiot parade, it looks like Perez Hilton may have finally gone too far by tweeting out a picture of an apparently pantyless Miley Cyrus exiting a car ala what Britney Spears did some time ago. This could potentially qualify as child porn and, if convicted, Perez (Aka Mario Lavandeira) could actually do some jail time.
Gee. How terrible.
I don't want to revel in the misfortune of someone else, but I'm a firm believer in you reap what you sow and when someone fouls the pop culture waters the way Perez has, well, let's just say I'm not surprised.
I always thought Perez would come to a bad end of some kind thanks to his endless gossipmongering and hateful posts,...

In a way it's comforting to know that it's not only Americans who will do anything to get their fifteen minutes of fame. Who knew pretending to be a bi guy was a way to get ahead. Broadwayworld.com caught up with Levi Kreis immediately after he won the Tony for Million Dollar Quartet. Levi chats about winning the big one for his Broadway debut, about playing Jerry Lee Lewis, and for those of you wondering who the guy was who he embraced after winning, it was his partner Jason. I've had my doubts about SyFy Channel for a while. First, they changed the name so dumb people would be able to spell it, then they added wrestling to the lineup.

The Newsweek columnist who suggested that openly gay actors couldn't play heterosexuals was a dumbass, but he wasn't off the mark with regard to Sean Hayes, who demonstrated how unconvincing he was as a straight man when -- during a fairly amusing gag-- he deep tongued Kristen Chenowith last night at the Tony Awards. Sloppy form, Mr. Hayes. Sloppy form.
I don't know dupe about Broadway, but I do recognize a few names from the list of The 2010 Tony Award winners last night, which included Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. And no offense against Broadway, but I don't think it helps the integrity of the Tony Awards to given Scarlett Johansson an award for best performance of anything, unless that performance is for drooling.
Here were the winners you were too busy ignoring last night in favor of "Breaking Bad," "True Blood,' or the NBA Finals.

While it’s true that the Tony Awards may be an annual religious experience for countless gay men and theater lovers alike, it also can’t be denied that they are the bastard step-child of televised award shows. Can you recall was the last the Tony Awards were featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly?
There is no red carpet pre-show where a Mary Hart wannabe quizzes Patti LuPone or Kristin Chenoweth on who they’re wearing. And there aren’t enough Hollywood A-listers on hand to warrant any wrap-up coverage by Ryan Seacrest.
Thank God for that.
But the 64th Tony Awards still managed to pull off plenty of entertaining moments that left the audience laughing, moved or even inspired. Here are eleven of the best moments that made this award show watchable.
#1 I would love to say that the entire opening montage was great.
Except that it wasn’t.

All of the winners at this year's Tony Awards have been named, unraveling "Red" as the big winner on the biggest night for Broadway. Stealing the spotlight, however, was Hollywood star Denzel Washington. The two-time Academy Award winner took home his first Tony award after the Sunday night, June 13 ceremony.
The star of "The Book of Eli" won Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his performance in "Fences". Accepting the kudo, the 55-year-old actor shared, "My mother always said man gives you the award and God gives you the reward. I guess I got both tonight." He went on to thank his longtime wife Paulette who was among the audience, and his children at home.
Denzel's win brought the Tonys' collection of "Fences" to three in total. Although nominated for 10 nods for the 61st Annual Tony Awards, the revival of August Wilson's play only managed to...

Katie Finneran won the featured actress Tony for her show-stealing performance in "Promises, Promises." She plays a barfly on the prowl who sets her sights on Chuck (Sean Hayes). Marian Mercer took home the featured actress award for creating this role in 1969. In 2002, Finneran did the seemingly impossible and upstaged theatrical royalty Patti LuPone in the farce "Noises Off," winning the featured actress in a play Tony Award. Levi Kreis plays Jerry Lee Lewis in the tuner "Million Dollar Quartet." Before coming to Broadway, he played this part in Chicago. Before his turn on the stage, Kreis carved out a successful recording career. In the jukebox tuner, Kreis portrays the great ball of...

"Memphis" won for best musical at the 2010 Tony Awards, but was shut out in the acting categories. The show, which tells the story of a collaboration between a white disc jockey and a black singer in the segregated South of the 1950s, also won for best book, best original score, and best orchestrations. Memphis came into the Tonys having bested the competition in the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards, and was considered by many to be a favorite. Also favored to win was "Red," which was named best play. The play about the painter Mark Rothko led all productions with six awards—including best featured actor, which went to Eddie Redmayne, best direction, scenic design, lighting design, sound design. Best revival of a play went to "Fences," whose leads, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis won for best actor and actress in a play, respectively. Two thesps making their...

The winning color was "Red" and the place to be was "Memphis" on Sunday during the 64th annual Tony Awards.
John Logan's two-character biodrama "Red," about American abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, took home the night's largest haul, winning six awards, including top-play honors. It also won for Michael Grandage's direction and for featured actor Eddie Redmayne as the artist's assistant and verbal punching bag.
The production originated at London's Donmar Warehouse, marking the fourth time in five years that the top-play prize has gone to a transatlantic import.
Accepting that award, lead producer Arielle Tepper Madover said, "It is our duty as actors, directors, designers and fellow producers to do just what Rothko did, to inspire, engage and foster new artists to fall in love with our craft and make it their own."

Here’s the easiest prediction to make about this year’s Tony Awards, which will be presented June 13 at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall: Host Sean Hayes will almost certainly make some reference to the hullabaloo about being too gay to play a straight man in the musical Promises, Promises. The CBS broadcast will also have an excuse to present a production number from his show even though it didn’t snag a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. (There’s talk that the show will open with a medley of “pop songs you might not know are on Broadway.

Though the economy was still in dire straits, Broadway carried on during the 2009-10 season, with visits from such high-voltage marquee names as Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig, Christopher Walken, Denzel Washington, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Liev Schreiber, and Scarlett Johansson. A little group called Green Day rocked Broadway's world with the stage adaptation of the band's hit album "American Idiot," Twyla Tharp paid tribute to Frank Sinatra in "Come Fly Away," and Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins formed a "Million Dollar Quartet." "Fela!," Bill T. Jones' combination dance party, concert, and musical biography, transferred to the Main Stem from its Off-Broadway run, as did Geoffrey Nauffts' tender and moving play "Next Fall." "Red" and "Time Stands Still" offered searing portraits of artists coping with crises, while Sarah Ruhl's "In the Next Room or the vibrator play" captured the repressive Victorian era. Broadway fare also...

Nathan Lane (pictured right), a two-time Tony winner and current star of The Addams Family musical on Broadway, stole the show yet again at the Drama League Luncheon Friday at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.
Tony-winning director Jerry Zaks presented him with the award for Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theater, and the star-studded dais, which included Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Vanessa Williams and Michael Urie, and the rest of the room roared with laughter and cheers throughout his acceptance speech.
Though Lane's show, The Addams Family, is a box-office hit, it didn't receive the most rapturous reviews and was largely passed over by the Tony nominations - something Lane pointedly pointed out. Here's what he said:
Well, this is the best Drama League Luncheon I've ever been to. ... I want to say how grateful I am that you chose me for this honor before the reviews for The Addams Familyappeared.

No Gay. Lesbian Joke. No Gay. Gay Joke. No Gay. Ooh, Look An Actual Gay!
This week the major networks announced their fall line-ups and mid-season replacements, and overall the news wasn't great for gay characters. Ugly Betty had already been deep-sixed on ABC, and as expected, NBC axed Trauma with gay paramedic Tyler and Mercy with gay nurse Angel, while the CW dropped Melrose Place, not that what's his face got much screentime anyway. Also not unexpectedly, ABC isn't bringing back the hilarious Better Off Ted which had two out actors Jonathan Slavin and Portia de Rossi, and which was usually gay-friendly.
Of the pilots that weren't picked up, the two biggest disappointments were ABC passing on the Cheyenne Jackson/Christopher Sieber sitcom It Takes a Village and CBS not going for the drama The Quinn-tuplets, both of which featured significant gay content.
So what did the networks go for of gay interest?...

There are so many movie and television faces nominated for the Tony Award this year that one begins to worry about how any stateside stage actor can earn a living. The answer, appears to be get famous in another medium in order to get plum stage roles.
Jude Law (Hamlet) is equally at home on screen or stage
This can work against the audience, this self destructive drive to only see the familiar, if it robs them of great stage trained actors in meaty roles. But thankfully this isn't a problem with actors who are adept at changing their "scale" for any medium. Take The Lovely Laura Linney, for instance, who no one would dare accuse of being out of her element whether she's on the silver screen, the living room telly or treading the boards on Broadway.

One has to hand it to the Tony nominators: They didn't follow conventional wisdom nor did they particularly pay heed to commercial considerations.
Indeed, some of the biggest noms went to shows that are either long gone ("Ragtime," "Finian's Rainbow," "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play," "Time Stands Still") or lagging at the boxoffice ("Fela!" "Memphis," "Next Fall," "Million Dollar Quartet").
The biggest surprises Tuesday were the omissions.
"The Addams Family," the most successful new musical of the season, was thoroughly dissed, failing to get noms for best musical, for its stars Nathan Lane or Bebe Neuwirth, or even for its production design. And though it did get one for original score, that's not exactly a coup in a season in which only one other musical, "Memphis," even had one. The category had to be embarrassingly filled out with the forgettable music from "Enron" and Branford Marsalis' incidental music for "Fences.
