A distinguished Surrey and Essex cricketer who represented England in
46 test matches. In the 1956 test at Old Trafford, he took match
figures of 19 wickets for 90 runs - still the best ever analysis in a
test match, or, indeed, any first class match. He took 9-37 and 10-53
in each innings. He later became a successful broadcaster with BBC
Television before his premature death in Putney on 23rd April 1986,
following gall bladder surgery, aged 64.
