As expected, the Cannes Film Festival line-up is pretty spectacular with new films from Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrea Arnold and David Cronenberg heading to the fest.
As the days are getting longer and there’s a tiny bit more sunshine in between the showers of rain, that can only mean one thing. The Cannes Film Festival is almost upon us.
Of course, us peasants rarely get to go, but it is fun to read the reactions from the glitzy world premieres as the stars gather in the picturesque town of Cannes.
And this year’s festival line-up is a doozy. We already knew George Miller was heading to the Croisette with Furiosa, Francis Ford Coppola is bringing Megalopolis and Kevin Costner will be premiering his new film, too, but there’s a whole heap of great filmmakers heading out to the beach with their films.
The highlights include Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds Of Kindness,...

Presenting two films at Rotterdam Film Festival this year, his sixth feature as a director “Hold Me Tight” and musical comedy “Tralala” by his regular collaborators Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu, Mathieu Amalric admitted he found it hard to shake off the role of a singer-songwriter in search of the Virgin Mary.
“It might have been the first time I didn’t want to leave my character. I didn’t cut my hair for a long time, I kept my beard. I was like [a cross between] Jesus and Jim Morrison. I have never felt that gorgeous before!,” he said during an online conversation with festival director Vanja Kaludjercic.
But the film also marked a turning point in his life, as he decided to take a longer break from acting following the shoot.

As for the Enter the Void director’s latest, he shot Vortex over twenty days between mid-March and April 2021, with a cast including Dario Argento, Françoise Lebrun, and Alex Lutz, as well as a budget of 3.3 million euros, more than his last two features. Gaspar Noé, son of the Argentinian painter Luis Felipe Noé, finished his film at the last minute because he shot it quickly and late. A quasi-documentary film about the last days of a loving old couple suffering from senility, played by Françoise Lebrun and Dario Argento.

As part of its commitment to support genre films, the Cnc will back La Grande Magie by Noémie Lvovsky, Don Juan by Serge Bozon and Tralala by Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu. Launched in 2018 in the name of fantasy, science-fiction and horror movies, the Cnc’s dedicated support system for genre films this year honed its gaze on musical films, and the jury, presided over by Christophe Honoré, has subsequently selected three projects which will each receive assistance to the tune of up to 500,000 euros. Among the lucky few, we find La Grande Magie, which will be Noémie Lvovsky’s 7th full-length work, on the heels of Oublie-moi, Life Doesn’t Scare Me (in competition in Locarno in 1999), Feelings (a Venice competitor in 2003), Let’s Dance (rewarded with a Best Actor gong in Karlovy Vary 2008), Camille Rewinds (Directors’ Fortnight 2012 and 13 nominations at the 2013 Césars)...

Carnal Knowledge: The Larrieu Bros.’ Strange Depiction of Summer Lovin’
Directing duo Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu create oddly distinct pieces of bizarre cinema, yet remain relatively unknown outside of France even though they’ve been regularly presenting new features over the past decade. Their latest is a necrophilic inspired sexual awakening comedy, blasting away at the usual sort of conventions we’re accustomed to in similar provincially mannered fare. Reteaming with a few ensemble players who’ve populated their last features, 21 Nights with Pattie is an enigmatic pattern of elements both unpredictable and borderline grotesque. Delightfully strange, and featuring an excellent ensemble of familiar French faces, this is certainly a more inventive take on the sexual awakening portrait—sort of like a romantic comedy version of Georges Bataille with just a dash of Jorg Buttgereit.

L’amour est un crime parfait (Love is the Perfect Crime)
Written and directed by Arnaud Larrieu and Jean-Marie Larrieu
France/Switzerland, 2013
Set in the icy backdrop of the Swiss Alps, L’amour est un crime parfait (Love is the Perfect Crime) is a dark thriller that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. With a rich emphasis on the link between man, literature, and landscape, the film takes its audience for a chilling ride.
Marc, played brilliantly by Mathieu Amalric, is a middle-aged literature professor who has an appetite for young female students. When Barbara, one of his brightest, goes mysteriously missing, her attractive stepmother Anna (Maiwenn) starts to hang around the university looking for any clues that might shed light on the girl’s sudden disappearance. Marc quickly becomes captivated with this woman and begins a torrid affair with her, unaware that she may have an ulterior motive.

Among the surprise/highly anticipated world preems we find Arie Posin’s The Face of Love, John Turturro’s Fading Gigolo, Kevin Macdonald’s How I Live Now, the long overdue showing for Charlie Stratton’s Therese and the out of nowhere sophomore feature from Quinceañera pairing Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland in The Last of Robin Hood, as well as the “theatrical” world preem to Sean Durkins’ Southcliffe (Channel 4′s TV Mini-Series, see pic above). Here are the added titles:

The titles just keep coming as we are now just over three weeks away from the start of the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and they have gone and added 90 new feature length titles to the program and it's not as if they are titles you haven't heard of. New to the Galas selection is Guillaume Canet's Blood Ties which premiered at Cannes earlier this year (read my review here) and Words and Pictures starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche. In the Special Presentations selection you find the bulk of the more noted titles including Alex Gibney's new documentary The Armstrong Lie about cyclist Lance Armstrong, Johnnie To's Blind Detective which also premiered at Cannes, James Franco's Child of God based on the Cormac McCarthy novel, John Turturro's Fading Gigolo which features Woody Allen in one of the roles, Kevin Macdonald's How I Live Now...

Thanks to the inquisitive nature of one of our most unabashedly hardcore cinephile writers on the site (Blake you’re a hawk!), we’ve uncovered a slew of title offerings for this year’s Tiff (a little ahead of what should be the final announcement wave) and we’ve got a grab-bag of mention-worthy items from beloved auteurs. Among the titles (see list below – here’s our source) we find carry-over items from Cannes in Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake, Rithy Panh’s The Missing Image, Guillaume Canet’s Blood Ties and Claire Denis’ Bastards (among one of our top films for 2013 – see pic above), while from Venice, we have the just-inserted Patrice Leconte title, A Promise and what will easily be among the most sought after Tiff 2013 coverage items in Catherine Breillat’s Abus de faiblesse. Here is the rest of the spoiler set:

Canada's most avant-garde film festival have released their entire slate for their 38th edition. Apart from Lee Daniel's pegged for Oscar - Precious, Lone Scherfig's An Education, Lars von Trier's Antichrist and Pedro Almodóvar's Broken Embraces (Los abrasos rotos), this year's edition is filled to the gills with obscure titles and names that even a hardcore connoisseur of world cinema such as myself is unfamiliar with. - I've just completed an exhaustive 35 film slate at Tiff and I've got very little time to recharge the batteries for The Festival du nouveau cinéma. - #22. Les Derniers Jours Du Monde Director: Jean-Marie Larrieu and Arnaud Larrieu Cast:Mathieu Amalric, Catherine Frot, Karin Viard, Sergi Lopez, Omahyra MotaDistributor: Rights Available. Buzz: A preem at Locarno hasn't brought about glowing reviews for this dystopian flick with the two plus hour run time. I'm not sure if this is an overly ambitious project or just a difficult sell, but I'll rally behind this one because I need something less grim to work with my appreciation of Children of Men. The Gist: A global apocalypse is about to destroy all mankind. In a final quest, Robinson (Mathieu Amalric) sets out on a journey from France to Spain, searching for Laetitia, the woman he once loved, even if it means heading back to the centre of the danger zone. But as the world is turning upside down, most people – through their blind panic – have decided to simply enjoy their

Yes there are other films we're excited to see in this final Tiff line-up announcement - Alejandro Amenábar's Agora, My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done by Werner Herzog - but let's face it the chance to see John Hillcoat's adaptation of the The Road two months early is just so damn cool that we had to give it top billing here.
You can check out the full Galas and Special Presentation line-ups after the break, or learn more about the entire festival over at the official Tiff site.

The Locarno Film festival is getting weirder every day. If you think the Piazza Grande is reserved for divine art house cinema, check this out! Before the screening of “Les Derniers Jours Du Monde”, two trailers for the new Pokémon movie were screened on the Piazza Grande and Shoko Nakagawa, the incarnation of a hentai girl, performed the title song. As if that hadn’t been enough, she was accompanied by Pikachu, himself – who also gave an interview: “Pika, Pika, Pika!!!”… The audience was not amused.
Shortly after the beginning of the Larrieu Brothers’ latest achievement it started to rain and thunder on the Piazza, so I saw most of the film from my refuge under the arcades and I stayed until the end.
