The WWE has declined to renew its contract with Hall of Fame wrestler and broadcaster Jerry “The King” Lawler.
Lawler joined the WWF (which later became the WWE) as a commentator in 1992, working on Superstars. In the early ’90s, he defeated Bret Hart and was named “Undisputed King of the World Wrestling Federation.” While he continued to wrestle, Lawler was a broadcaster for Raw, SmackDown! and WWE pay-per-views until 2016.
Lawler has not been been featured on a WWE TV broadcast for over a year, but he still has a legends deal that allows him to work with the organization on merch and other licensing. Despite his departure from the broadcast team, Lawler is said to still have a great relationship with the company. Indeed, he was backstage at SmackDown in Memphis in March.

Exclusive: Comedian Tom Segura has identified the most promising vehicle yet to showcase his acting chops, as Deadline understands that he’s in talks for multiple roles in Dirty Rotten Bastard, a show biz-centric indie from Ed Helms & Mike Falbo’s Pacific Electric Picture Company.
Helmed by Ryan McNeely and Josh Martin, aka The Director Brothers, the film tells the insane true story of an aspiring filmmaker who is kidnapped by deranged lounge singer Tony Clifton. Initially drawn to document Clifton’s world, he is thrust into a chaotic journey of sex, celebrity, and comedy, blurring the lines between observer and participant, and testing his sanity.
Segura will play legendary avant-garde comedian Andy Kaufman’s larger-than-life comedic persona Clifton, as well as the performer’s friend and longtime collaborator Bob Zmuda.
Zmuda was known to switch off with Kaufman in portraying Clifton, a foul-mouthed lounge singer out of Las Vegas,...

Madonna made headlines 30 years ago when she dropped the F-bomb 14 times (including her description of host David Letterman as a “sick f—k”), made sexual innuendos, and refused to get off the stage during her Late Show appearance on March 31, 1994. Arguably, however, Letterman fired the first shot while introducing Madonna, saying that the pop star had “slept with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.” In 2015, Madonna told Howard Stern she was in “a weird mood” that day in 1994. “I was dating Tupac Shakur at the time, and the thing is, he got me all riled up about life in general,” she said. As you’ll see below, though, Madonna’s Late Show appearance is one of many late-night interviews that took a controversial, scandalous, or chaotic turn — and two even went down on the same night. Nearly 40 years after outré comedian Andy Kaufman’s death from cancer, there remain fans who are certain that a faked demise was Kaufman’s most ambitious and committed hoax.
Until proven otherwise, this is a ridiculous conviction. That said, it’s probably no more or less absurd than believing that Andy Kaufman is a figure who could be explained or even adequately summarized in a conventional documentary. There are some outsized personalities so cloaked in mythology that even the tallest tales about them seem believable, but Kaufman’s personality was so cloaked in subterfuge that any attempt to deconstruct that personality or his behavior is going to come across as a bit within a bit.
This is the problem that Alex Braverman’s new documentary Thank You Very Much runs into. The documentary is filled with fantastic footage from Kaufman’s fearless performances, mostly familiar but still wildly iconoclastic. It...

Award-winning documentarian Clay Tweel (Gleason) has been set to direct the first authorized feature doc on comedy legend Andy Kaufman for Campfire Studios, Seven Bucks Productions, Worldwide Pants Incorporated and Fifth Season.
Fully financed by Fifth Season – with EVP of non-scripted and documentary Mary Lisio overseeing – the film will be produced in partnership with The Andy Kaufman Estate. Boasting unprecedented and exclusive access to Kaufman’s family, as well as personal and never-before-seen archives and private recordings — provided by the Estate — and all Kaufman-related archival material from the estate of his longtime manager George Shapiro, it will track the creative process of a performance artist who operated at an undefinable frequency.

When we think of the most iconic late night talk show moments, there are a few that stand out: Crispin Glover nearly taking off David Letterman’s head, Jerry Lawler slapping Andy Kaufman in the face in 1982 and Jay Leno asking Hugh Grant on July 10th, 1995, “What the hell were you thinking?” following his June arrest for engaging in sexual acts with a prostitute named Divine Brown. We couldn’t have said it better, Jay.
Speaking with Chris Wallace on his titular show, Jay Leno remembered giving Hugh Grant one last chance to back out of the interview, which was scheduled well before the incident. “You know, he was great. Nowadays, you’d have 100 handlers. I called him up, and I said, ‘You still in for tomorrow?’ He goes, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘You know, I effed up. And, you know, it’s my fault.’”

Andy Kaufman, the legendary comedian, prankster and “inter-gender champion”, will be honored as an inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the celebrity wing.
Andy Kaufman may not exactly scream wrestling, but the WWE has defended its decision (certainly not the most controversial this year), noting his history in the world of sports entertainment, particularly his rivalry with Jerry “The King” Lawler. In their official statement, the WWE said, “The rivalry between Lawler and Kaufman became national news leading to a legendary exchange on Late Night with David Letterman. The interaction would later be memorialized in the 1999 movie biopic Man on the Moon, where Lawler appeared alongside Jim Carrey as Kaufman to recreate the iconic moment. Kaufman’s interactions with Lawler transformed the business and opened up pathways for future cross-over Superstars such as Johnny Knoxville who honored the comedian with his WrestleMania 38 ring gear.” Lawler, who...

Andy Kaufman is set to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2023, Variety has learned.
Kaufman will be inducted alongside this year’s fellow honorees that currently include Rey Mysterio and The Great Muta.
Kaufman is best known for his career on the stage and screen, most famously starring as Latka Gravas in the hit sitcom “Taxi” from 1978-1983. He made his mark on the world of professional wrestling, however, when he declared himself the Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World, offering money to any woman who could pin him as part of his act. This famously led to a feud with fellow WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler in the Continental Wrestling Association in Memphis, Tn.

Jerry “The King” Lawler has a career that spans more than 50 years, and it’s chronicled in this Sunday’s (March 19) episode of Biography: WWE Legends. The show tracks the Hall of Famer’s career from the 1970s when he was a popular staple in Memphis wrestling where he’d regularly sell out the Mid-South Coliseum. His gift of the gab showed early on through a gig as a disc jockey at a local radio station. A&e Lawler really made headlines for his heated rivalry with Andy Kaufman. The Taxi star loved the performance side of the pro wrestling business and couldn’t help but get involved. He often challenged women, demeaning them and taunting crowds, which led to Lawler stepping into the picture. Their feud gained national attention after Lawler slapped the comedic actor on a memorable episode of The Late Show with David Letterman. The scene played out...

WWE 2K23 features quite a few improvements to the franchise formula that will certainly be welcomed by wrestling game fans everywhere. Of course, some things never change, which means that WWE 2K23 still makes you unlock quite a few wrestlers via gameplay accomplishments and by spending both real and virtual currency.
The very good news is that WWE 2K23 makes the various unlock processes fairly painless. The problem is that the game doesn’t always do a great job of telling you exactly how to unlock those wrestlers or the best way to go about acquiring all of them. Hopefully, we can help ease that part of the unlock system just a bit.
How to Unlock Every WWE 2K23 Wrestler With Virtual Currency
The vast majority of wrestlers in WWE 2K23 are unlocked via the game’s Virtual Currency (Vc) system. Every wrestler available via the in-game store costs 1,000 Vc to unlock.

In last Tuesday’s This Is Us, as Rebecca neared the end of her time on Earth, an old friend showed up to offer a sort of benediction. “You’re as tough as they come, Rebecca Pearson,” Dr. K told her, smiling kindly. “And you, my dear, have earned a rest.”
Now, on the eve of the NBC drama’s series finale, the hour has arrived to swap out “Rebecca Pearson” for “Mandy Moore,” and “a rest” for “some Emmy love.” In other words: It’s time for Moore to get the respect and admiration she’s surely earned over the past six seasons.

As many of you whom follow my work may recall, I have kind of soured on the whole brand battle gimmick when it comes to WWE PPVs. The whole thing peaked back in the early-to-mid-noughties and has had highs and lows since then (with even a Raw vs. Smackdown PPV called Bragging Rights running for a bit) but now it seems like it only gets in the way of running storylines for a temporary night where brands all of a sudden become important and divisive (though adding Nxt in the mix last year helped a tad). Those days really feel to have passed and yet, here we are again, as an intriguing WWE Championship picture involving Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre, “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt and The Miz is shelved in favour of a Raw vs. Smackdown champion match, alongside a few other brand clash matches and classic survivor series elimination tag battles.

To condense the career of Jim Ross into a single article isn’t easy. The man has been the voice of pro-wrestling for so many of us for such a long time, it’s hard to truly highlight how much he means on an emotional level, but also… he’s done so much in the business too, as an announcer at ringside, but also behind the scenes, working with talent and even assembling one of the most stacked and incredible pro-wrestling rosters in history. Still, I’m a glutton for punishment, so I’ll at least try to talk about his career, highlighting some of the, well… highlights, whilst also urging you to check out Jim Ross’s books, Slobberknocker and Under the Black Hat, for an in-depth and entertaining glimpse into the life and career of the man himself.

News broke last Sunday night (9th August 2020) of the passing of James “Kamala” Harris. An iconic face of a different era in wrestling and a big part of the ’80s pop cultural boom for the sport.
Harris had a long and varied career that spanned multiple promotions and decades, tangling with legends like Jerry Lawler, Mick Foley, The Undertaker, Bruiser Brody and even Daniel Bryan. His character of a (Frank Frazetta-inspired) face-painted monstrous warrior from the wilds of Uganda (Harris was actually American) was a gimmick of its time but this character, that he made his own, thrived thanks to Harris’ sheer commitment to playing the part.

So, I’m a wrestling fan, have been for going-on three decades, and so when I’m not watching pro-wrestling on television or on PPV, or when I’m not looking back on old shows, or when I’m not collecting wrestling figures, or when I’m not watching documentaries about the wrestling business, I’m likely listening to a pro-wrestling podcast. Oh, and there’s a whole lot of those. The podcast world is drenched with high-quality wrestling podcasts, and because of this fact I can’t listen to them all, but I do my best to listen to a good selection of them, and so I thought I’d recommend a few here, a few that I personally consider the best wrestling podcasts out there today.

Dwayne Johnson said in a video Sunday that his father, former wrestler and WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson, died of a blood clot in his leg that caused a heart attack.
The Rock posted a lengthy video to Instagram thanking his followers for their support in his time of grief and shared some additional memories of his father. But he clarified that Rocky Johnson had deep vein thrombosis — a blood clot in his leg that traveled to his lung, formed a clot and quickly killed him of a heart attack.
“A lot of you wanted to know what happened to my dad. He had not been feeling well. Been battling a cold, an infection. On Tuesday he had a deep vein thrombosis, which is essentially a blood clot in the leg, a big old blood clot. It broke free, traveled up his body and went right to his lung.

Rocky Johnson, a member of the WWE Hall of Fame and the father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, died on Wednesday at the age of 75, according to Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Born Wayde Douglas Bowles in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1944, Johnson began his wrestling career at the age of 16 and became a top star in the National Wrestling Alliance in the 1970s. He won multiple regional Nwa titles, traveling through the territorial system and wrestling against legends like Harley Race, Terry Funk, and Jerry Lawler.

We’re on our way towards the annual WWE event known as Survivor Series. Beginning in 1987, this event takes place each November in WWE and was one of the “Big Four” PPV’s in the company for the longest time. I’m not quite sure it’s considered to be as big as it once was, though, because it no longer feels as unique and interesting as it did for many years.
Early Survivor Series events saw a number of matches in which teams of four would team against each other, elimination style, in order to see which WWE Superstars would survive. Sometimes a whole team would survive, and their opponents would each be defeated until none were left. Sometimes each team would eliminate member of the opposition and only one or two members would survive. It was interesting, intriguing and exciting.

If you’ve been watching the WWE for a while then you’ve seen Jerry “The King” Lawler come and go, and you might have been glad about it or sad depending on how you feel about the guy. The truth is that he’s been back and forth with the company for a while since he and Mr. McMahon don’t always see eye to eye, as it seems to happen with some individuals that work for the company. But overall the King has been a vital part of the announce team for WWE for too long to simply dismiss him for anything

Trish Stratus will return to WWE next month at SummerSlam, taking on Charlotte Flair in what the company is calling a "dream match" between two stars from different eras.
Stratus was the guest on a special edition of "The King's Court," with Jerry Lawler hosting his famous talk show segment as SmackDown originated from his hometown of Memphis on Tuesday night.
During the interview, Stratus was interrupted by Flair, who has been making appearances in dark matches for WWE but has been, for the most part, kept off television for the last few months. Charlotte entered the ring and bragged about being the "queen of all eras" before challenging Stratus to a match. So, to point out the obvious right now, I’m a rather big fan of professional wrestling. Yep, the world of spandex, drama, clotheslines and bodyslams has been part of my life for over 26 years. I guess some things in life change, but some things stay the same. My love for wrestling has remained throughout the years. When I first started watching wrestling it was obvious who were the big stars in the business, which guys were featured in the big roles, and which were the bigger names, larger than life, top of the card, front of the VHS cover. Hulk Hogan. “Macho Man” Randy Savage. The Ultimate Warrior. Andre the Giant. Back in 1992, when I began watching, Andre was pretty much finished as an in-ring worker, but his presence was still present, the aftershock of his run was still felt by the business, the fans and the wrestlers he’d worked beside.

Think you've grappled with every great digital wrestler? You haven't until you've played these underrated wrestling games.
Whether you don’t know the difference between a mark and a bump or you can name the participants in every WarGames match, you’re probably aware of the absolute best wrestling games of all-time. Titles like SmackDown: Here Comes the Pain, WWF No Mercy, and WCW/Nwo Revenge have transcended the popularity of professional wrestling itself and have become a part of many gamers' fondest memories.
Yet, there are some forgotten wrestling games that are still worth remembering. While it’s true that there is a well-defined top and bottom in the wrestling game hierarchy, there are also a few titles somewhere near the middle that have been unfairly lumped together even though some of them deserve a spot near the top of the card with the undisputed legends of the wrestling game scene.

The family of former WWE star Brian Lawler is speaking out, saying they don't believe he killed himself in his jail cell as the Tbi investigates his death.
Just before his death last month, he made a 15-minute phone call to his father.
"He said I'm going to die in here," his father, wrestler Jerry Lawler, said. "He just kind of went on about the conditions there."
A few hours later, his mother received a different call — this time from someone at the jail saying Brian had gotten into a fight that caused him to get stitches.
That was the last call the family say they got, until one last one from a deputy sheriff.
"He said 'Mr. Lawler, I got some bad news.' He said 'Your son Brian has hung himself.'"
"Hanging" is listed as the cause of death on Brian's death certificate.

Sometimes you have to give the Santas and Frostys a rest and celebrate the holiday folks who don't get the spotlight.
It’s holiday time and that means celebrating all the big guns of the Christmas season. The likes of Jesus, Santa, Frosty, Rudolph, Krampus, the Grinch, Ebenezer Scrooge, George Bailey, and – depending on how much time you spend at Hot Topic – Jack Skellington. But there are so many Christmas-themed characters who don’t get the same red carpet treatment.
Let’s take a second to give a little extra love to the yuletide heroes and villains who hang out on the second or third tier of Christmas cheer.

A documentary about Jim Carrey's method antics on the set of Man On The Moon turns out to be a profound and moving must-see, Ryan writes...
Why bother? It's a question occasionally worth levelling at the 'Method' - an immersive, all-consuming kind of acting created by the filmmaker and actor Konstantin Stanislavski.
