Warning: This article contains major spoilers for "The Menu."
Following in the class-conscious footsteps of horror comedy films like "Ready or Not" and "The Hunt," "The Menu" serves its viewers a deliciously deranged takedown of society's elite members. Centered around an exclusive dining experience on a private island, Chef Julian (Ralph Fiennes) has decided his craft (and life) will no longer be ruled by the demanding whims of wealthy people. With each course, Julian's remaining grip on reality and sanity loosens. By the film's end, he and his burnt-out crew literally go up in flames, damning his impossible-to-please clientele along the way. Director Mark Mylod crafts an impeccably paced film — something the fictional Julian would appreciate — that dials up its tension through each foreboding frame.
Pairing "The Menu" with other horror films about food is an unenviable task. No horror comedy movie balances its thrills, dark humor, and food design as well as Mylod's work.

Part 2 of the compilation horror series Tales from the Dark is set to scare the bejeezus out of Hong Kong cinema going from August 8 and a new trailers just been released. Aside from looking extremely creepy, and just a little noir-esk, another plus - if we really need one - is that unlike its predecessor this has been given a category III (the most severe Hk censors have to offer) rating, so it’s definitely going to be on the splattery side! Synopsis: The project of Tales From The Dark was initiated as a result of the recent commercial and critical success of a string of local productions. By assembling six remarkable Hong Kong filmmakers, each of them well crafted and diversified with their own style, it brings viewers to a uniquely mystical realm of wickedness. Adapting from the horror novel series by best-selling author Lilian Lee, it delivers audience six different dimensions of horror.

In the first of a two-part film project, three short stories from acclaimed Hong Kong horror writer Lilian Lee are adapted for the big screen in this star-studded horror anthology. Results vary from the good to the tedious, however, with the various socio-political messages lost in tired genre trappings. Lilian Lee is one of Hong Kong's most successful authors, who has published hundreds of novels, many of which have been adapted for the big screen. Stanley Kwan's Rouge, Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine and Tsui Hark's Green Snake were all originally penned by Lee, and so the prospect of six diverse filmmakers adapting half a dozen of her short stories into an ambitious anthology project was understandably an enticing concept. Tales From The Dark 1,...
