A new Tyler Perry legal thriller, "Mea Culpa," has quickly climbed up the Netflix global Top 10 charts despite being poorly received by critics. There's an absurdist streak in the story where almost nothing makes much sense, leaning hard into exaggerated and predictable plot progressions that feel unrealistic from start to finish. Perhaps this willful absurdity contributes to the guilty pleasure of it all, shooting "Mea Culpa" to the top of the streaming charts, where it's sitting at number one as of this writing.
Part sleazy erotic thriller, part relationship drama, "Mea Culpa" centers on criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), who needs to take on a case involving artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes) and his deceased girlfriend Hydie (María Gabriela González). Although there are reasons to believe that Zyair is guilty of murdering Hydie, Mea's increasing attraction to her client further complicates matters, despite her dedication to uncovering the truth.

The Tyler Perry cinematic universe is expanding. The latest from the prolific producer, writer, and director is Mea Culpa, a new steamy thriller starring Kelly Rowland (The Curse of Bridge Hollow), who is also a producer on the film.
Also starring Trevante Rhodes, Sean Sagar (The Gentlemen), Nick Sagar (The Princess Switch), and RonReaco Lee (Nappily Ever After), the film centers around a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of a seductive artist accused of murdering his girlfriend. But when burning desire takes hold, things get hot… and dangerous. “This idea came to me because I love all of those older thrillers from the ’80s and ’90s,” Perry tells Tudum. “It was fun to explore the best and worst of humanity through the genre of an exotic thriller.”

Loosely translated, “Mea culpa” is Latin for “it’s my fault.” It’s something of a cheeky title for Tyler Perry’s Netflix Erotic Thriller Mea Culpa, considering that lead character Mea (Kelly Rowland) can hardly be blamed for the events that transpire.
Like most Erotic Thrillers, Mea Culpa traffics in temptation, desire, and secrets. The two hour film opens with a deluge of expository back story, immediately throwing the audience into the sordid family life of Mea Harper, a wealthy and successful criminal defense lawyer based out of Chicago.
The first few scenes confirm that Mea is having marital difficulties with her husband Kal Hawthorne (Sean Sagar). He’s been unemployed for eight months after being fired for his drug addiction, and they’re in couples counselling because Mea suspects he cheated with his friend Jenna (Arianna Barron).
Mea is also extremely jealous of Kal’s relationship with his mother,...

‘Mea Culpa’ Review: Tyler Perry’s 1980s-Style Erotic Thriller Serves Up Guilty Pleasures to His Fans
Within his deal at Netflix, Tyler Perry has found room to flex his narrative muscles, mixing his familiar brand of comedy and melodrama with other genres. “A Jazzman’s Blues” applied Perry’s usual formula to a 1930s period setting. Before that, his first film for the streamer, “A Fall from Grace,” found him trying his hand at a legal thriller. Now, with “Mea Culpa,” the prolific writer-director pushes that genre further, making a loopy 1980s-style erotic thriller with a distinctly Tyler Perry flair. The plot skews close to “Jagged Edge” with a lawyer falling for her client, a man accused of murdering his partner, while referencing another famous ’80s staple, “Fatal Attraction,” via a love nest accessed only by freight elevator.
The lawyer in this scenario is Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), and her possibly guilty client is artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), who’s accused of murdering his girlfriend.

Kelly Rowland is on a press tour promoting her Netflix film Mea Culpa and was asked about Beyoncé’s new country album and the possibility of a Destiny’s Child reunion.
Rowland and her Mea Culpa co-star Trevante Rhodes stopped by radio station V-103 Atlanta for an interview on The Big Tigger Morning Show with Jazzy McBee to talk about their film. However, things turned awkward when the show’s host asked about Beyoncé’s music.
“Your sis just dropped a whole new couple of songs, and it’s my understanding that Renaissance II may or may not be country-based, and then there’s a rumor going around that Renaissance III may be, either rock-based or a DC reunion,” Big Tigger asked.
Rowland replied with a wink, “That is her business to talk about, not mine.”

Kelly Rowland stars as a defense lawyer whose relationship with a client goes from professional to personal in Netflix’s Mea Culpa from writer/director Tyler Perry. The two-minute trailer shows Rowland taking on a murder case and learning too late that a snake is never violent while it’s stalking its prey.
The film also stars Trevante Rhodes, Nick Sagar, Sean Sagar, RonReaco Lee, and Shannon Thornton.
“When criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Rowland) takes on the murder case of artist Zyair Malloy (Rhodes), the truth isn’t as obvious as it seems,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “While she tries to determine the innocence or guilt of her cagy-yet-seductive client, it is uncovered that everyone is guilty of something. Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa explores what happens when burning desire takes hold and things get hot… and dangerous.”
Perry, Rowland, Dianne Ashford, Will Areu, and Angi Bones serve as producers.

"Please - this is my life and they're trying to ruin me." Netflix has revealed the full official trailer for Tyler Perry's next film titled Mea Culpa, about a defense attorney's steamy affair. Set for streaming on Netflix starting in February, where Perry still has a deal and has been releasing most of recent films - including A Jazzman's Blues before this one. A criminal defense attorney takes on the case of a seductive artist accused of murdering his girlfriend, but when burning desire takes hold things get hot... and dangerous. Starring Kelly Rowland as Mea Harper, with Trevante Rhodes, Nick Sagar, Sean Sagar, RonReaco Lee, and Shannon Thornton. The tagline should just be "everyone is guilty of something", which is a strange way to deal with injustice but hey maybe it makes for some steady movies. So many good lines in here: "a snake is never violent when stalking their prey.

The award-winning producer will direct his fifth feature film for Netflix after helming multiple projects for the streamer, including the 2020 thriller "A Fall From Grace," the comedy "A Madea Homecoming," and the period drama "A Jazzman's Blues." Perry also has another project in the pipeline, the upcoming film "Six Triple Eight," which stars Hollywood heavyweights Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey, and Susan Sarandon, among others. The film is a World War II-set drama based on a 2019 WWII History magazine article by Kevin M. Hymel. It will focus on the 6888th battalion, the only all-Black and all-female battalion that served in World War II.
At the moment, Netflix has only made information about the cast and crew of "Mea Culpa" available. With that in mind, here's everything we know about the film so far!

The music video that opens ABC’s new drama “Queens” lays it on thick. Each member of the Nasty Girls — Naomi, aka Xplicit Lyrics (Brandy); Valeria, aka Butter Pecan (Nadine Velazquez); Jill, aka Da Thrill (Naturi Naughton); and Brianna, aka Professor Sex (Eve) — struts out of a burning mansion, across the bow of a luxurious yacht, and through a chorus line of half-nude dancers without missing a step. Directed by Tim Story, whose ’90s résumé boasts videos for Tyrese, ’N Sync and Ginuwine, the video for “Nasty Girl” knows what it has to do to evoke memories of the specific window in hip-hop history it’s trying to capture.
In a key difference from Peacock’s superficially similar comedy “Girls5eva,” the track “Queens” introduces here isn’t parodying its respective genre. Each of the women’s rap verses is sharp and distinct, making clear their talent as both individuals and a swaggering collective.

In creating the nine-episode first season of “First Wives Club,” Tracy Oliver had a solid starting point: the 1996 feature film of the same name. The source material centered on three friends who banded together after the death of a fourth to get revenge on the cheating men in their lives; it was rooted in some very real pain, but also consisted of comedic hijinks — a sensibility Oliver says is her own.
“I love a raunchy set piece, but I also love writing with heart and staying grounded,” Oliver says.
Her “First Wives Club” explores three distinct looks at marriages gone sour, from Ari (Ryan Michelle Bathe) and David (Mark Tallman), who look great on paper but haven’t been truly connecting well, to Bree (Michelle Buteau) and Gary (RonReaco Lee), who separate after he cheats, to Hazel (Jill Scott) and Derek (Malik Yoba), who also separate due to his infidelity...

"Maybe the time spent there chasing your dreams is better off spent here, chasing a paycheck." Lionsgate has released a trailer for a comedy titled 2 Minutes of Fame, formerly known as #TwoMinutesofFame (oh do I hate hashtag film titles and I'm glad they changed this one). The film is about a wannabe comedian who becomes internet famous after making impressions of another comedian. He heads to La to try and achieve greater fame, but ends up in the cross-hairs of the veteran stand-up comic who "plots a rude—and hilarious—awakening for Deandre." Jay Pharaoh stars as Deandre, with Keke Palmer as his girlfriend, and a cast including Katt Williams, RonReaco Lee, Kimrie Lewis, and Valery M. Ortiz. This looks solid, with good humor, but also some key lessons to learn about family, life, success, and fame. Might be worth a look. There’s politically incorrect, and then there’s just plain wrong.
Netflix’s “Coffee & Kareem” pairs a young black kid with an inept white cop and hopes that their differences will amuse (or at least distract) stuck-at-home audiences for 90 minutes or so. But what audiences? What adult wants to watch this kind of “Kindergarten Cop” nonsense? that no parent in his or her right mind would let Junior tune in.
But that’s the beauty of Netflix, I guess: Age-based MPAA ratings are for the chumps who make movies for theaters (such a 20th-century — or at least pre-coronavirus — concept), whereas when it comes to serve-yourself at-home streaming, there’s no divide between bad movies and bad-for-you movies.
So here’s the pitch: James Coffee is an awkward, overly cautious cop — a role for which Ed Helms is well suited. Kareem Manning is a chubbier-than-most Detroit public school misfit forced...

Bet Plus has renewed “First Wives Club” for a second season.
“Tracy Oliver’s ‘First Wives Club’ has been hugely successful on Bet Plus, served as one of our signature originals at launch and helped us quickly become the largest African American focused Svod service,” said Devin Griffin, general manager of Bet Plus. “Our subscribers loved season one and are eagerly awaiting season two.”
Production is set to begin on the second season in September in Atlanta. The first season followed best friends Ari (Ryan Michelle Bathe), Hazel (Jill Scott), and Bree (Michelle Buteau) as they reunited to help each other through rough patches in their lives. Tired of always being the ones to make sacrifices, they vowed to prioritize their friendship and have more fun. Along the way, the women learned that as long as they have each other, there’s nothing they can’t do.
