Take a dip in the murky waters of supernatural horror with Night Swim! Director Bryce McGuire makes a splash in his feature directorial debut, turning a suburban backyard into a supernatural battleground. The film, swimming upstream against the frigid release waters of January, stars Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon as parents grappling with more than just adjusting to a new home, uncovering the aquatic enigma of a potentially haunted pool. For someone like me, who spent childhood summers playing Marco Polo and avoiding sewer gators in the shadowy depths at night, Night Swim hits close to home.
Night Swim introduces us to the Wallers, a family yearning for stability as they settle into a new home, with their patriarch Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell) seeking to stay afloat amidst the challenges of his waning health. The property’s unique feature, a seemingly invigorating pool, becomes a centerpiece of their daily life,...

You know might feel really great, and completely relaxing, after surviving the often stressful end-of-the-year holidays? Why a refreshing dip in the pool of course! Oh, but you’re not near an indoor facility, so you’ll have to wait out the long frigid winter until the temps are near ninety or so. Well, how about making a virtual splash at the multiplex? And this “cement pond” doesn’t shut down with the sunset. But doing “laps” alone in the fluorescent lit waters can be pretty spooky. And that’s the inspiration for the first new horror flick of 2024, which may just make you “swear off” any notions about taking a Night Swim. Marco…Marco…
This tale of soggy terror begins with a flashback to the early 1990s. Late one night a girl of eight or nine spies her ailing brother’s motorboat doing circles in the deep end of the family pool.

January is here. That’s the time when studios will traditionally and unceremoniously dump movies in which they don’t have a lot of confidence. That usually includes a lot of horror movies. But last year, January gave us such well-received offerings as M3GAN, Knock at the Cabin, and Skinamarink. So, what does this January have in store for us? We shall see. First up – the new Blumhouse Studios movie Night Swim.
Night Swim is about a former baseball player named Ray Waller (Overlord’s Wyatt Russell) who is suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. Along with his wife Eve (Kerry Condon from The Banshees of Inisherin) and kids Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and Elliot (Fear the Walking Dead’s Gavin Warren), he seems to find...

Expanding a horror short to feature length is tricky work, particularly when the short in question gets straight to the scares. Writer/Director Bryce McGuire’s 2014 short Night Swim, a collaboration with Rod Blackhurst, cut straight to the horror to exploit everyone’s worst fears about swimming pools. Almost a full decade later, McGuire’s feature expansion showcases more ways to mine terror from the aquatic concept, buoyed by a great cast, but a familiar formula and simplified mythology threaten to sink it all.
After a cold open demonstrates the dangers of the film’s haunted location, a seemingly benign anywhere America backyard pool, Night Swim introduces the ill-fated family destined to discover the supernatural treachery awaiting them. The Waller family are at the beginning of a new chapter in their lives; a recent degenerative illness diagnosis cut a professional baseball career short for dad Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell). As...

Bryce McGuire, writer and director of the Universal Pictures horror film, shared in a new featurette that his aim with Night Swim was to ruin swimming pools forever. Actor Wyatt Russell, on the other hand, believes that the movie might make viewers at least think twice before taking a plunge.
The 2024 horror film is based on a short film by McGuire and Rod Blackhurst. In addition to Wyatt Russell (currently seen playing a younger version of his dad Kurt’s character in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), Night Swim stars Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Amélie Hoeferle (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and Gavin Warren (Fear the Walking Dead).
James Wan and Jason Blum serve as producers, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Ryan Turek executive producing. Night Swim opens in theaters on January 5, 2024.

If broadcast Pilot Season is any indicator, the Peak TV numbers are in for a rude awakening.
A decade ago, ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC collectively ordered an eye-popping 98 comedies and dramas during Pilot Season 2013. That figure, the most since THR began tracking overall volume in 2012, is now considered a relic of the past.
With the Covid-19 pandemic effectively wiping out Pilot Season 2020, the networks were forced to lean into the year-round programming strategy many had discussed but hadn’t really executed. Now, the shift is in full swing as the overall volume of pilots ordered across the five networks is likely to hit another low after they collectively picked up 35 comedies and dramas last season.
What’s more, the economic downturn has also prompted broadcasters to be more selective in how many scripts they buy and which among those will actually get made. Network executives — including new presidents at CBS,...

Of the projects announced on Monday, 53 percent were directed or created by one or more women, 51 percent were directed or created by one or more filmmaker of color, and 26 percent were created or directed by one or more people who identify as Lgbtqia.

Among the announced independent shows include works by Nick Hornby, Richie Mehta, and Kyra Sedgwick, which range from comedies about start-ups to dating comedies about trans relationships to dramas about race. Sundance is also bringing in some other TV projects under its Special Events banner, including the newest season of IFC’s ongoing doc parody series “Documentary Now!” and Gregg Araki’s upcoming Starz series “Now Apocalypse,” executive produced by Steven Soderbergh.
The Special Events section will also play home to a brand new (and as yet untitled) documentary from Sundance regular Amy Berg, which tracks the creation of the Women’s March and what followed.

TBS has opted not give a third-season renewal to its summer series People of Earth, the network’s supernatural-tinged comedy. Creator David Jenkins tipped the news last night on Twitter, and the move comes after the network had initially renewed it in the fall along with fellow summer series Wrecked and The Guest Book.
Jenkins told fans that Season 3 of the single-camera comedy, from Conan O’Brien’s Conaco and Warner Horizon Television, had already been written.
The series, executive produced by Greg Daniels and O’Brien, revolves around a group of alien abductees – or “experiencers” – living in the small town of Beacon, NY. The ensemble cast includes Nasim Pedrad, Michael Cassidy, Wyatt Cenac, Ana Gasteyer, Oscar Nuñez, Michael Cassidy, Alice Wetterlund, Luka Jones, Brian Huskey, Nancy Lenehan, Tracee Chimo, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Björn Gustafsson and Ken Hall.

Four episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
It doesn’t take long for TBS’s new half-hour sci-fi comedy/drama to get weird. In fact, it’s before the end of the show’s pilot, when one of its alien denizens – which might be a hallucination, or might be an actual reptilian invader bent on humanity’s destruction – appears out of nowhere in the car of series lead Ozzie (Wyatt Cenac) and asks, “don’t get weird, okay?”
That’s one of many played-straight oddities that nets People of Earth its biggest moments of high concept laughs, and more often than not (in the first four episodes made available for review, anyway), the show is far more hit than miss. There’s a straightforward slant to its story – bigwig New Yorker slums it in a small town and quickly becomes invested in its peculiarities – but what People of Earth succeeds...

Emily Lou's ghostly horror comedy The Selling is now available on iTunes via GoDigital so if you're in the market for some lighthearted and spooky laughs this weekend (that are intentional, unlike another flick based on a video game franchise opening this week), this is your hot ticket!
The film stars Gabriel Diani, Jonathan Klein, Janet Varney, Etta Devine, Nancy Lenehan, and Barry Bostwick.
Synopsis
Richard Scarry is a real estate agent who tries to talk people out of buying houses they can’t afford. When his business partner, Dave Ross, comes up with a scheme to flip an old house for profit, he only agrees because he needs to find a way to pay for his sick mother’s medical bills. As Richard and Dave start fixing up the house for buyers, it becomes obvious why their real estate nemesis, Mary Best, was so eager to pass the house along to them.

Chicago – It’s funny how one tweak of the formula can lead to something tasty while another can lead to something rancid. On paper, CBS’s “2 Broke Girls,” one of the breakout hits of the season both critically and commercially, is not that dissimilar from “How to Be a Gentleman,” which premieres tonight on CBS in the cush post-“The Big Bang Theory” timeslot. They’re both oil-and-water, “Odd Couple”-esque shows but while the first one feels (at least mostly) fresh, the second one is just stale in every way. Please don’t choose this over the amazing “Parks and Recreation,” airing in the same timeslot on NBC.

John Swihart is scoring the new CBS comedy How to Be a Gentleman. The show created by David Hornsby (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and based on the nonfiction book of the same name by John Bridges chronicles the friendship between an uptight columnist and his more freewheeling trainer. Hornsby also stars in the comedy alongside Kevin Dillon, Dave Foley, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Rhys Darby and Nancy Lenehan. Adam Chase (Friends) and Ted Schachter are executive producing the project with Hornsby. How to Be a Gentleman is set to debut on September 29, 2011 and will be airing every Thursday night on CBS.
